The Future of Phone Charging

The ability to charge your device wirelessly is becoming a more popular feature of smartphones as time goes on.

Using wireless charging pads, these phones are able to be charged over a short distance without the use of phone cables, and looks neater than conventional phone chargers. We've all experienced the pain of fraying or broken phone cables, and inductive charging pads ensure this will never be an issue again.

How Does It Work?

Wireless Charging Pads work by transferring energy using electromagnetic induction. An induction coil within the charger creates an alternating electromagnetic field, and the energy is transferred from the charger to a receiver which is in the back of a phone. The receiver converts the energy back to electricity which is then fed to the battery.

During this process there may be a small amount of energy lost, but this is minimal and will decrease ever more as the technology improves. Due to the energy transfer, this process may cause

Which Phones Are Enabled with Wireless Charging?

Many of the most popular modern smart phones are able to be charged wirelessly, from all sorts of manufacturers, and amongst them are the following:

  • Apple iPhone: XS Max XS, XR, 8, 8 Plus
  • Samsung Galaxy: S10 Plus, S10, S10e, Note 9, S9, S9+, Note 8, S8, S8+, S7, S7 Edge
  • Sony: Xperia XZ3, Xperia XZ2 Premium, Xperia XZ2
  • Huawei: P30 Pro, Mate 20 Pro
  • Google: Pixel 3 XL, Pixel 3

What if my phone cannot charge inductively?

If your phone isn't mentioned above, and isn't enabled to naturally charge through one of these devices, you can still use them. All you will likely need is a wireless charging receiver (see photo on the right), or if your phone is a much older model, you may need an adapter too.

Wireless charging receivers are little patch like devices which you place between your phone and the wireless charging pad. The connector (available in lightning, micro USB or USB-C to suit your phone) is then inserted into the phones normal charging port and the bottom of the device. The charger then transmits the energy to the pad, which sends the power directly to your devices battery via the port as usual.

This enables older phones such as the iPhone 7 or Samsung S6 to also make the most of those charging pads.
