Don’t Print Brochures – Give Them Out On A USB Stick

We were recently approached by a UK distributor and asked to stock their products and promote them via our website. During the meeting with the sales representative he handed over, with no small amount of pride, a copy of their latest glossy product brochure. To say it hit the desk with a resounding “thud” would be an understatement!

The brochure contained 379 pages of full colour print and weighed in at 1080 grams. Granted it was a nice looking brochure but it must have cost a small fortune to print them. But the print costs paled into insignificance when the sale representative went on to explain he’d spent the previous day with his manager stuffing these brochures into envelopes to post out across Europe!!

A conservative estimate would suggest that it must have cost an average of about £20 to print, pack and send each brochure out via Airmail!

Is this crazy or do customers still expect to receive high quality brochures to browse through and to encourage them to trade with your business?

These same brochures were also to be handed out at Trade Shows and Fairs but given their weight I’m not sure how many of the attendees would have been willing to take one and lug it around with them all day – walking around trade shows can be tiring enough without being lumbered with hefty brochures. It must be interesting to check the bins around the exhibition halls to see how many brochures are dumped.

Ironically, the same brochure could have been loaded onto a USB memory stick and sent out across Europe for a fraction of the cost.  In fact, not only could the brochure have been pre-loaded onto the USB sticks but they could also contain video clips, price lists, press releases, links to web sites and so on.

OK, you can’t “browse” a USB memory stick in the same way you might flick through a printed catalogue but the content is there for someone who is genuinely interested and there is a much stronger likelihood that they keep the USB Stick (branded with your company logo and contact details) rather than consign it to the bin.

The same arguments apply at Trade Shows and Exhibitions – it makes far more sense to hand out the information about your company and its products on something that is not going to end up in the bin but will instead be kept and used and will act as a reminder of your company and what you have to offer.

Not convinced then we encourage you to run a test – use USB sticks printed with your logo and pre-loaded with your brochure(s) at your next event and see if you get any uplift in sales and enquires compared to previous events where you handed out printed brochures.

UK print is charged “per colour” and there is a set-up fee for each colour as well so it’s not really a service that makes sense for very small quantities simply because the fixed set-up costs have to be amortised over a small number of sticks.

In an ideal world you really need to allow around 10 working days for any order of customised USB memory sticks because this way you can take full advantage of the cheaper costs of getting the sticks printed at our factory in China and you’ll get a much wider choice of USB sticks to choose from.

The models of USB sticks that we tend to hold in the UK ready for “rush printing” are the Twister, the Chic and the Trident and we’ll normally hold these in a range of standard colours which typically include as a minimum black, blue and red.

The most popular size of flash drive requested by our customers is 1Gb or 2GB so these tend to be the sizes that we carry but if you want something different it’s always worth checking what we have available.

The last few years have been pretty torrid for the house-building sector over the past few years. The number of new houses started in March 2011* was 29,140 which sounds like a reasonable number but its 41% down from the peak reached in March 2007.

Although there has been a slight uplift in starts (and completions) over the last couple of months it’s still much too soon to get overly optimistic about an early recover in the housing market.

One of the challenges for any housing developer is keep their stock moving and the cash flow as healthy as possible. Buying the right development plots and building houses in a style that people want is of course fundamental but much of the challenge of getting the houses sold and sold quickly depends on the strength of the sales and marketing activity around any given development.

Buy Cheap USB Flash Drives But Beware Of The Issues

When you’re in the market for USB flash drives and you go out and get various quotes how do you ensure when comparing the quotes that you are comparing “apples to apples”.

Simply asking for quotes on say 500 x 1GB USB flash drives printed with a 2 colour logo on a Twister Style USB flash drive is likely to result in quite a spread of prices. Some of this will be down to the different margins that each supplier works on, some of it will be down to pricing for “extras” like print set up, data-loading, boxes, lanyards etc. but some of the difference can be down to the quality of the flash you’re likely to be supplied with.

Determining the quality of the USB flash drives you are being quoted on can be incredibly tough, particularly if you’ve not bought USB flash drives before. The problem is that from the outside a basic Twister 1GB USB flash drive looks much like any other basic 1GB Twister USB flash drive but if you were to examine the core components inside the flash drive (assuming you know what you are looking for) then you might be surprised at the differences.

The key components inside each USB drive are the flash memory chip, the controller (which is the “brains” and issues instructions to the flash memory), and the capacitor which manager the power. Each of these components are available in from different manufactures and as you might expect there are “cheap” low spec versions available as well as high performance versions.

Some suppliers of USB flash drives will quote prices based on “bottom end” internal components whereas others, recognising the issues they create and being concerned about their reputation and the reputation of their client will only quote for mid-range to top-end components.

It’s not unheard of for some suppliers to also supply “masked” USB flash drives. These are 1GB drives that might only have a real storage capacity on them of 600MB – difficult to spot because when they are plugged into a PC they will show 1GB of space available but if you write more than 600MB of data to the drives these files will fail!

Masked USB flash chips are much cheaper to buy because they are typically chips that have been rejected by the factories that make them because but they are sold in the “grey” market as “B” or “C” Grade chips and then typically find their way into the promotional flash drive market.

If you end up buying cheap USB flash drives that have been assembled using “masked USB flash chips”, a cheap controller and a cheap capacitor then you can expect the drives to have a high failure rate, very poor read/write speeds and a short life span. For some companies who are looking to buy on price and price alone this won’t be an issue because they are willing to accept a high failure rate – typically these are companies buying promotional give-aways where a degree of failure is acceptable.

But, if you are looking to hand your printed USB flash drives out to your staff, your pupils or important clients/prospects and you want the drives to be used and have a reasonable life then you should be aware of these potential issues and you should ask some hard questions of your suppliers based not just on what the flash drives look like on the outside but what components are used on the inside.

Ideally, ensure you get some guarantees on the grade of chipset being used and check the credentials of the supplier.

As with everything in life you get what you pay for and printed and promotional USB flash drives are no exception!

If you’re considering ordering some promotional USB sticks printed with a logo on then it can be a challenge knowing which USB sticks will work best with your logo. After all there are hundreds of different models to choose from and they all tend to come in a range of different colours and finishes so it’s rarely a straightforward decision.

It gets even trickier if you’re trying to squeeze some additional text onto the USB sticks or perhaps get a complex logo or school crest printed. With only a relatively small amount of print space to work with you often have to compromise on what you can realistically print without making the logo or text so small that its not readable.

Of course some USB memory sticks like the credit card versions lend themselves to supporting larger more complex images but not everyone is wants a credit card or can easily visualise what their logo might look like printed on a credit card.

Most reputable and established suppliers of promotional flash drives will have their own in-house designers who can take your logo/brand and “mock it up” on a range of flash drives for you. Typically all they’ll need to generate the mock-ups is a reasonable quality image (even a jpeg will do for a mock-up) and a little bit of background about your company/school, any branding guidelines they need to adhere to any ideas you have – armed with this they will be able to send back to you a range of professionally produced illustrations showing you what you printed USB sticks could look like.

These mock-ups are great for narrowing down your selection and getting any internal sign-offs you need for the project to go ahead.

Prices for branded and promotional USB flash drives have shot up over the last couple of weeks with prices fluctuating by as much as 20% to 30% in a single day.

The earthquake in Japan and the subsequent concerns about long-term supply of flash memory are at the root cause of the price increases. Japan is responsible for the manufacture of around 35% of the world’s flash memory modules and in the days immediately after the earthquake the markets in which flash is bought and sold effectively saw a “run” on the price of flash.

Like any market pricing is driven as much by sentiment and FUD (fear uncertainty and doubt) as much as it is driven by hard fact and it would be fair to say that in the days immediately after the earthquake the market was in turmoil with factories and speculators driving up the price.

A week or so on and things, as far as USB flash pricing is concerned, are beginning to settle down. It would be premature to say things had returned to normal because uncertainty over supply is still a concern but the initial concerns about long lasting damage and severe shortages are dissipating.

With many companies around the world planning to use branded USB flash drives as part of their sales and marketing campaigns it’s a relief that supplies are now not only returning to near normal and that pricing is beginning to settle down.

Fortunately whilst the core price of USB flash drives at the factory gate has increased the effect on the end user has been softened a little by the USD dollar weakening against Sterling (GBP). If like thousands of companies and schools this year you are considering giving away (or in some cases selling) USB memory sticks with your logo or brand printed on them then there are some key points to consider. Some of the most basic things are to:

  • Ensure you have good quality artwork for your logo or brand. Don’t just “cut and paste” your logo from your web site and expect this to be suitable. You must have high resolution, print ready images otherwise the final print will appear “blotchy”.
  • Leave enough time – ideally allow at least 10 working days for the delivery of your order. The clock usually starts ticking on the 10 days from the point you sign-off your proof so you might want to factor in a couple of extra days to allow for this.
  • Branded USB memory sticks come in a wide range of styles, colours and materials. Choosing one that shows off your brand is not always easy so if your supplier offers a “free design and mock-up” service then make sure you take advantage of it to help you make the right decision.
  • Don’t pay for memory you are not going to use – a 1GB USB memory stick is the “norm” these days because these allow plenty of space to store data, they’re useful enough to encourage on-going usage but you won’t be paying a premium for storage you don’t need. Prices start to ramp up quite significantly when you get up to 4GB and beyond.
  • Make sure you buy from a reputable supplier. When it comes to selling USB memory sticks and flash drives over the web frauds and scams are rife. The problem seems particularly bad on eBay where lots of people are lured into buying what, on the face of it, seem like genuine high capacity flash drives only to discover when they arrive that they are fake.

The fakes might look like the real thing but when they are used its typical to discover that for example the purported 16GB flash drive only contains 4GB of flash memory and that memory has been “masked” to look like a 16GB drive. If you plug the flash drive into a USB port on your PC and check the properties of the flash drive it will look like a 16GB. Its only when you try and load more than 4GB of data onto the drives that you’ll get a “disk full” error message.

The other common issue is the quality and speed of the fake flash drives. Most fakes use cheap, grade “B” flash memory components some of which will be recycled. The problem with these components is that they have a high probability of failure and they typically have slow read/write speeds.

As a consumer if you are looking to buy a good quality and fast USB flash drive then buy from a known local supplier and ideally a supplier that is an approved reseller of well known brands like Kingston, Transcend, Buffalo and Sony. If you do this and you discover problems with the drive at least local consumer rights cover you and the return of the drive to the retailers is relatively easy.

Unfortunately these frauds are not restricted to the retail market but are beginning to creep into the highly competitive market for promotional USB flash drives. Promotional USB flash drives are sold to companies, school and universities in their millions every year and whilst they are ordered from local suppliers the USB drives are manufactured to order and flown in from China.

Pressure to reduce prices and win business has seen some unscrupulous local suppliers of branded USB flash drives supply “masked” flash drives and pass them off as drives of a higher capacity. So, companies taking delivery of what they thought were 1GB flash drives might only be getting 512MB drives or 4GB drives might only be 2GB drives.  Ironically one of the parties caught up in this was a UK based Police Force who unwittingly purchased what they thought were 1GB flash drives. The USB drives were for distribution to students and they were pre-loaded with information on “awareness about theft and identify theft” but instead of being 1GB drives they were in fact masked 512MB drives.

The only way to be sure that you are getting what you are paying for is to load one of the USB flash drives to the limit and check that you can load 1GB of data onto a 1GB flash drive – you’re never going to get access to 100% of a 1GB drive because some of the capacity is used to manage the file allocation but you should typically be able to us around 95% of a 1GB drive.

The alternative is again to buy from known, trusted and reputable suppliers who have been around for a good number of years and who are not going to disappear overnight and who will stand behind any guarantee that’s on offer.

The old adage of  “If something sounds too good to be true then it most likely is too good to be true” offers sound advice.  If you are sourcing printed USB memory sticks for your school or company and one company’s price sticks out as being very competitive just check on exactly what you are getting and who they are and make absolutely sure you check the amount of memory on a random sample of the drives when they are delivered.
