Pick a Card, Any Card, Any Card at All

Posted by USB2U on 4th July 2014 | Permalink

No, this is not a reference to a playing card trick where you get scammed or by a magician who’s been learning his craft for many years but instead it’s a reference to the wide range of promotional USB cards that are now available.

Until a couple of year ago most USB drives were pretty simple rectangular shaped pieces of plastic/metal. Yes there were variations between them but broadly speaking they all were all the same sort of shape and style with USB sticks like the capless “twister” being the most popular.

The problem with these rectangular “sticks” is that they offer very little print area to work with. They’re fine for printing a simple logo and strapline on but for larger and more complex images things start to get tricky – there just isn’t enough room on standard USB sticks for some images.

A couple of years ago the first USB Cards were launched and whilst these dealt with the challenge of printing large images they were pretty “clunky”. They were the same shape as a credit card but much, much thicker and the mechanism to access and use the USB connector was not brilliant and in regular use was prone to failure.

Today we’re able to use UDP flash memory components which are much thinner than traditional COB (Chip on Board) components and this has transformed the range of USB models and designs that are available. They’ve had the greatest impact on USB Cards with the typical thickness of a USB card now reduced to just 2mm!

USB-Cards---Different-Style

USB-Cards---Different-Style

The net effect of this is that we are now able to offer a wide range of card shapes (triangles, circles, squares, rectangles and credit cards) and they can all be printed in full and glorious colour on both sides of the card with a full bleed of the image right up to the edge of the card! So if you have some amazing images and you want them to be used on your promotional USB memory sticks you now have plenty of options.

As you can see from these examples certain company brands lend themselves really well to a particular shape of card but the default option tends to be the credit card shape as much as anything because it’s a shape we’re all familiar with and we all have wallets and purses to keep them in!

New USB Cards for 2014 – Flip, Slide and Pop-Out

Posted by USB2U on 24th June 2014 | Permalink

If you’re looking to buy printed USB credit cards (or USB business cards) then you’re spoilt for choice because with the addition of our [email protected] USB cards we now have three different types for you to select from.

They’re all the same size as a standard bank card, they’re all incredibly thin with the [email protected] version being the thickness of a piece of card and they can all be printed in full colour (with full colour bleed to the edge of the card) on both sides. They come in memory sizes ranging from a relatively small 128MB to a whopping 32GB so there is an option for everyone and every eventuality.

USB P@per Cards from USB2U

USB [email protected] Cards from USB2U

The main difference between the three cards is how you access the USB connector and the data stored on it. On the [email protected] cards you “pop-out” the USB flash stick – it can be pushed back into the card for safekeeping after it’s been used. With the “Flip” version you apply a small amount of pressure to one side of the card and the USB connector “flips” out of the other side and the Slider pretty much “does what it says on the tin” – the mini USB flash drive slides in and out of the card shaped host.

The Flip and Slide USB Cards are manufactured entirely from plastic (they’re around 2mm thick) but the [email protected] USB card is typically made from a robust paper card with the USB plastic connector and “host socket” being made from plastic (see the images to get a better idea).

Slide USB Cards from USB2U

Because the cards are a form factor that we use in everyday life we all we all have a way of carrying them around (wallets, purses etc.) so they’re a really handy shape. In the credit card industry they talk about “share of wallet” which is a reference to getting your brand/card in someone’s wallet. Arguably it’s the same with these USB Cards. If you can make the card appealing and attractive enough (not just with a flash design but with lots of spare storage capacity for the recipient to use for their own data) then whatever brand is printed on the card is going to get some powerful “share of wallet”.

At UBS2U we carry thousands of the flip and slide USB Cards in stock ready for same day print (for customers that like to leave things right until the last minute) so leads times are rarely ever an issue! For the [email protected] cards the lead times are around 7-10 days. Always best to call us to discuss your requirements and we can advise accordingly.

30 Uses for a Branded USB Credit Card

Posted by USB2U on 10th February 2014 | Permalink

USB Cards from USB2U

Custom USB flash drives are now firmly established as a key tool within the Promotion and Sales industry. Whether you have a sales event or want a convenient way to distribute information about your offering, branded memory sticks are the way to go.

Out of all the different types of custom memory stick available, USB Credit Cards have been the big hit of late! Their success is down to the large print area on the cards and their ability to carry up to 16GB of data in a really convenient shape that adheres to the basic “form factor” of a credit card, and fits nicely into your normal purse or wallet!

Not only that, but they support full colour and photo effect prints and can be supplied in a complementary wallet or case. Costing just a little more each than a standard “stick shaped” memory stick they are certainly worthy of consideration particularly if your target audience is ABC1.

Still not convinced? Read on to find out how branded USB cards can work for you…

USB Cards Used by the Motor Industry

1.    Business cards – USB Cards are often printed front and back to look like a Business Card, but they are pre-loaded with lots of information about the person whose name is on the card and the company it’s being issued on behalf of – typically links to websites, PDF brochures and links to LinkedIn pages are pre-loaded onto the cards.
2.    Business “Giveaway” – the cards make great leave-behinds after a business meeting – print them up with your company logo, images of your products etc and use as an innovative way to leave your mark
3.    Giveaway at trade shows – draw people to your stand with a USB card and use this instead of a printed flyer/brochure. Pre-load the card with the same information though – it’ll help save on the cost of printed material, carriage and storage
4.    Direct Mail Campaigns – Include a USB card in any Direct Mail campaign. Stick the card to your flyer/mailer– the cards are so thin and light that they will fit into a standard envelope and are light enough to still be classified as standard post. Of course you can then load tons of information and offers onto them!

5.    Press Events – USB flash cards make fantastic handouts for press launches (and lunches!) – journalists are happy being given them particularly when they are pre-loaded with digital copies of all the press packs, press releases and product images etc. This means they’ve got less to lug around afterwards, so always a winner!
6.    ID Badges – use them with a lanyard to create an ID badge and store personal information on the flash memory
7.    Use with a pin clip to create a simple name badge – again the cards can be pre-loaded with relevant personal information.
8.    Print with a photo on and use as a Photo-ID badge – again lots of scope to pre-load information on the memory tucked inside the card.
9.    Use as a party or wedding invite – pre-load all the event information on the USB cards about the happy couple, the venue and the ceremony (and of course lots of embarrassing photos from the Hen and Stag do’s)
10.    Table name cards – use at an evening dinner event or wedding reception and personalise the cards with the guests name, then place them on the table to help people know where they are sitting.
11.    Print up with a QR code which can be scanned and take your customer directly to your website.
12.    Birthday Party Invitation – Print them up to look like a birthday party invitation and pre-load the cards with lots of information about the party. You can also have a bit of fun by pre-loading the cards with a montage of photos of the birthday boy or girl – the more embarrassing the better.
13.    Use as a season ticket – printed to look like any standard season ticket (with photo and or barcode), but this time load the USB cards with all the information about the club, the team, the players and the fixture list.
14.    Car dealership brochure replacement – print the USB cards with the great images of the latest model(s) and load with tons of images, fact sheets, price lists, videos, financing options etc on the cars
15.    Shopping Centre USB Card – print with a great image of the shopping centre on one side and the opening hrs etc. on the back but pre-load the flash memory with details of every store, the shopping centre layout, the parking and as much other information that you can get your hands on – you’ll have up to 16GB of space so there is lots of scope.
USB Flash Drive Cards from USB2U

16.    Turn into a music USB card – ideal for a band to promote their music, their gigs and their videos – stuff the memory full of taster tracks, video clips, details of forthcoming gigs, biographies of the band members, links to the bands websites and twitter pages etc.
17.    Sell your house with a USB card – abandon traditional paper agent details and go for a fully interactive version on a USB card. Print the front and back of the card with images of your property, add your contact details, and load the memory with photos, details of the local schools, any survey information, video clips and any other information you might have about the property.
18.    Promote your theatrical performance or concert with a USB card – print the card up with some great images of the performance and/or the venue and then pre-load the card with video and music clips of the performance, copies of any physical marketing flyers, details of the seating plan(s), the ticket costs and so on.
19.    Use a USB card at University Open Days – use the space on the card to print some really good images of the University and what it stands for, and then use the memory capacity to load up all of the prospectus and course information, details of the accommodation, fees, deadlines, typical grades, league tables and information of student life at the University
20.    Gift Vouchers with a little added extra – print the USB cards up to look like a gift voucher – include QR codes, unique serial numbers and add other security features, but fill the memory on the card with loads of special offers, sale events, preview events and so on. Small print runs of 25 or more make this a viable option for even the smallest business, pub or restaurant.
21.    Take Away Restaurant Menu – The smaller memory sizes of the cards make them cheap enough for your local Take-Away to use – printed with their details on the front and back and pre-loaded with the menu on the card (and “locked” so it can’t be deleted) – handy for people to keep in their wallet or purse.
22.    Fine dining restaurant menu and wine list – Brilliant “up-market” promotional tool for top end restaurants – send to your VIP customers to launch your new menu and include as much information/photos and any reviews you can on the restaurant.
23.    Exam revision tool – hand out to student loaded with past papers, hints, guides, example answers, revision tools and anything else you think they might find useful.
24.    Professional photographer’s marketing aid – USB cards make an ideal way to supply clients with their photos and the cards can be printed with some great portfolio shots.
25.    Electronic Book – print the cards with detail of the book cover and load an electronic copy of the book onto the card. Include biography of the author, movie clips, reviews, exerts from other work and cross sells of other authors work. These can also be used for new book launches, but make sure the cards have serial numbers so you can trace where they end up!
26.    Promote your Marketing and Advertising company – these cards make an excellent give-away to new prospective clients – a great way to showcase your work.
27.    Use the USB Cards as a fundraising tool for any World Challenge event – print them up with some great images of your, your party and where you’re going and pre-load them with details of why you’re going, what you hope to achieve and how people can help – include links to fund raising pages and blogs and twitter accounts so they can follow your progress.
28.    Venture capital fund raising tool – print with an image that will excite and inform and include your contact details on the back. Pre-load the USB card details of your business idea, your business case, any financial figures, links to any press coverage, biographies of the founders, shareholdings and levels of cash you are trying to raise. Ideally include a presentation (or two) and of course all of your contact details.
29.    Competition prizes – if you’re running a competition, why not offer a set of branded USB cards as prizes. Each winner of a card can choose their imagery and you can send this off with your logo or watermark on the back – great for increased brand explosure!
30.    Staff rewards and incentives – If you want to incentivise your staff then giving them a USB card with a large memory size is a great, practical gift. You can make sure you still brand this up to suit yourself, but give them the option of adding their own imagery if desired. They can use this for years to come, so definitely a gift with longevity!

You may not have considered branded USB credit cards previously, but the small additional cost is worth it in terms of the visual impact and much greater perceived value. If you are interested then give us a ring or fill out the on-line enquiry form and we’ll get back to you with a tailored quotation. We also offer a free design and mock-up service to help you visualise the end product. We always carry USB Credit Cards in stock and irrespective of what you want to use them for, they can be supplied printed in just 24hrs!

Do You Flip or Slide Your USB Cards

Posted by USB2U on 13th January 2014 | Permalink

Promotional USB Cards are gaining in popularity all the time and if the current trend continues they look set to overtake many of the more traditional styles during 2014 in terms of number of units sold.

Whilst promotional USB memory sticks have been with us for over a decade it was only 2-3 years ago that USB Cards started to appear but the first versions were much thicker than the very skinny 2mm thick models that are popular today. Their rise to prominence has been underlined by three key features:

1)      They’re only 2mm thick and they are typically credit card shaped so they are easy to slot into a wallet or purse.

2)      They’re ideal for posting out to customers and prospects because there is no “bulk” to them meaning they still qualify for the cheaper letter postage rates rather than the much more expensive package posting rates.

3)      They have a large print area and you can print in full colour on both sides of the cards right up to the edges. This gives you scope to print some stunning images and to include lots of detail like contact names, telephone numbers, email addresses, website URL’s, strap lines and so on!

USB Credit Cards

USB Credit Cards

A well designed and well printed USB Card will look stunning and because they’re not really available on the high street they still get people who are given then a little excited.

Despite being just 2mm thick you don’t have to compromise on memory capacity – they still come in memory sizes all the way from 128MB up to a whopping 16GB (We expect 32GB cards to be available a little later in 2014).

The one big decision you have to make when buying USB cards these days is whether to go for the version where the USB connector “flips” out of the card but is still attached to the card when in use or whether you opt for the newer version where the USB connector slides out of the card completely.

USB Cards - Slide Version

USB Cards - Slide Versiion

The advantage of the slide version is that is much more obvious how to use it and get to the USB connector but the big disadvantage is that it’s easy to lose the USB connector section once it’s been removed! We still sell significantly more of the “flip” versions but sales of the slide model are on the increase.

If you’re thinking of buying some USB credit cards any time soon but you’re not sure which option to choose just give us a call and we’ll arrange to send out a sample of each.

Promote Your Business in 2014 with USB Cards

Posted by USB2U on 2nd January 2014 | Permalink

Promotional USB memory sticks USB cards of all shapes and sizes were incredibly popular last year and their on-going popularity in 2014 looks assured. It was only a couple of years ago that they were a niche product with most businesses and schools opting for the more traditional models like the “Twister” USB but when thinner versions of the cards were introduced all this changed.

The current USB cards are only 2mm thick (just marginally thicker than a standard bank card) and they come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. They can be printed in full colour on both sides of the card and because the “USB connector” is tucked away inside the card there is no cap to lose!

Of the different USB card shapes available the credit card option tends to be the most popular for two reasons:

  • It’s the largest of the USB cards and as such offers the most scope to get creative when it comes to design and print – there is lots of space to include things like strap lines, phone numbers, website addresses and postal addresses. It’s not unusual for the credit card versions to have a really impactful image on one side and for the reverse to be printed up with the company’s contact details (see the examples below).
  • It’s a shape we are used to carrying – pretty much everyone has a wallet or purse with bank card slots and these USB cards just slip straight into them! The credit card industry used to talk about the benefits of their brand have “share of wallet” and the same can be argued with these USB credit cards – how many times will your brand be seen if it’s carried around in a purse or wallet!
USB Credit Cards

USB Credt Card Collection

Other shapes available are; circles, squares, triangles, rectangles and ellipse (egg shaped) cards – all can be printed in full colour on both sides.

The different shapes of the cards allow you to get creative as well; we’ve used square cards for Durex and printed them to look like a condom pack, we’ve used the circle shaped USB cards and printed them to look like a poker chip, the rectangle shaped cards have been printed to look like a domino and the triangle cards have been made to look like a Toblerone!

USB Circle Cards - Costa Coffee

Despite being only 2mm thick the USB cards are available in a wide range of memory sizes (128MB all the way up to 16GB). They’re only pennies more than a standard USB stick and they can be supplied (printed and data-loaded) in as little as 24hrs.

So, if you’re looking for something a little bit different to kick start your sales and marketing activities in 2014 then you might want to consider using a USB card.

Product spotlight: Slider & Flip Out USB Credit Cards

Posted by USB2U on 23rd October 2013 | Permalink

USB Cards - Flip Version with full colour print

If you’re looking to send out or giveaway some sort of branded USB this year, then look no further than the popular USB card – these come in a range of different shapes with the credit card version being the most popular! All offer full colour printing options, front and back, across the whole surface area of the card, and the size gives great flexibility to include things like website addresses, phone numbers, email contacts and even QR codes!

Most of the USB cards in our rage have USB connectors that ‘flip’ out – you just push gently on one side of the card to reveal the USB connector on the other – with this type, commonly called ‘flip cards’, the USB piece stays attached to card. There is another version where the USB connector slides out completely and becomes separate to the card. Both are great, but the more popular is the ‘flip’ version because there is no chance of the USB itself being lost.

Why use a USB Card?
The only downside with most USB sticks is that if you have a large logo or design to print then you may struggle. The reason is that the print area on most standard shaped USB sticks is tiny (typically 2cm x 4cm), so they don’t give much scope to get too creative. If you do print anything complex onto this small print area then there is a danger that it won’t be legible, and imagery may become really blurred or pixelated – not the most professional way to market your brand! With a USB card, you don’t have to worry, as you can print on both sides to the bleed edge (3mm) and on both sides – you can also choose different images if you so wish for each side. Just bear in mind that to achieve a really good quality finish you need good quality artwork or photography. Ideally this means vectorised (.ai or .eps format) artwork rather than a jpeg.

Size
Size is another factor that makes USB cards so popular. Despite being just a little over 2mm thick (fractionally more than any standard bank or credit card) these USB cards are available in memory sizes up to 16GB which is more storage than you got on a lot of desktop PC’s just a few years ago!

The fact that they are the same size as a typical bank card also means they’re a shape we’re all familiar with, and fit into most wallets and purses for easy access.

Cost
Cost is always an important factor, but don’t worry or expect to pay a huge premium for the cards – they are a little bit more expensive (because of the amount of printing involved), but it’s typically pennies extra rather than pounds!

Ease of Use
Both styles are easy to use, although the only slight negative with the Flip style is the way in which the USB connector is accessed and how it is subsequently plugged into a USB port. The ‘flip-out’ mechanism can be a little bit tricky to get used to, and for some it’s not immediately obvious how they work.

Also, once the flip section that contains the USB has been opened, you need some free space around the USB ports you’re plugging into, otherwise you run the risk of not being able to insert the USB correctly. A lot depends on whether you’re using the card with a laptop or desktop, what other peripherals you’ve got plugged into your USB ports, and whether the orientation of the ports is horizontal or vertical.

With the slider USB cards you lose none of the benefits of the flip version, but the card is easier to use because it’s obvious when you see it that the USB connector slides out. Once removed, you effectively have a small USB memory stick that will slot comfortably into any USB port irrespective or the ports orientation and whether anything else is plugged in alongside it!

When you’ve finished using it, the USB stick simply slides back into the host card and you can pop it back into your wallet or purse! No fuss, no hassle.

Both versions of the cards are available in a range of memory sizes, and both are available from stock in the UK in as little as 24hrs – that’s printed and data-loaded (if you need it) in 24hrs from your order being placed.

If you need more convincing then we can supply free mock-ups and/or free samples on both types of the USB card. Just give us a call or fill out our online quote request and we’ll get back to you in a flash!

Easy To Use Slider USB Credit Cards

Posted by USB2U on 24th July 2013 | Permalink

USB credit cards have become more and more popular over the last couple of years. The main reason for the surge in their popularity has been the significant reduction in their thickness (down from 6mm to around 2mm) coupled with the fact that you can print in glorious colour on both sides of the cards.

The fact that they are the same size a typical bank, store or loyalty card also means it’s a shape we’re all familiar with and most of us have wallets and purses that cards of this shape slip easily into.

The only slight negative with the original version of the USB credit card is the way in which the USB connector is accessed and how it is subsequently “plugged into” any USB port. The “flip-out” mechanism can be a little bit tricky to get used to and for some it’s not immediately obvious how they work. Once the “flip” section that contains the USB has been opened you need some free space around the USB ports you’re plugging it into otherwise you run the risk of not being able to insert the USB correctly. Much depends on whether you’re using the card with a laptop or desktop, what other peripherals you’ve got plugged into your USB ports and weather the orientation of the ports is horizontal or vertical.

Product Spotlight: USB Card Circles

Posted by USB2U on 17th April 2013 | Permalink

USB Circle Cards - Costa Coffee

Another derivative of the original USB credit card, these USB circle cards are just 3mm thick and the USB connector works just the same as on the other card models, by flipping out ready to be plugged into a waiting USB ready device. As the name implies, they make great “button badges” but they work equally well to promote any other “circular product” – we’ve printed these to look like a poker chip, classic vinyl records (very cool!) and even Coca-Cola bottle tops!

  • Outer Casing: Plastic
  • Available Colours: White
  • Memory Sizes: 128MB, 256MB, 512MB, 1GB, 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 16GB, 32GB
  • Dimensions: 43mm x 43mm x 3mm
  • Branding Options: Full colour digital printing, spot colours
  • Imprint Area: Front/Back
  • Imprint Size: 49mm x 49mm (inc 3mm bleed)
  • Special Options: Pin badge attachment can be included (upon request)
  • USB Card Circle Artwork Guidelines

Please note that Pantone matching and matte rubber coating are not available on this range.

Just like Play School
You may remember the opening sequence from BBC TV classic Play School – “Here’s a house, here’s a door. Windows: 1, 2, 3, 4. Ready to knock? Turn the lock – It’s Play School” – and if you don’t then you need to look it up on YouTube! The show made great use of basic shapes like triangles, squares, circles, with the underlying premise to get the children used to recognising and understanding shapes and how they featured in everyday life. Well, our range of USB cards feature the same shapes, with a lot of demand going toward the circle shape – popular not only because of the quirky shape, but also because we can print in full colour on both sides of the card. This can be full bleed right to the edge of the card and offers a much larger print area to work with than a standard USB stick, meaning complex photo quality images can be re-produced with ease.

Another plus to using the Circle USB cards is that they come with high quality flash memory up to 32GB (which is X4 times the amount of storage you get on most Apple iPhone C models!) Take advantage of this to properly use the memory capacity you’re buying. Don’t just hand them out without anything pre-loaded onto them. Use the memory to load them up with sales collateral, information videos, links to your web pages and social media pages – anything is better than nothing. Don’t worry about the hassle of having to load the data yourselves, either, as we can do this for you!

USB Cards – and we’re not talking just USB Credit Cards.

Posted by USB2U on 19th March 2013 | Permalink

USB Cards come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes these days and by size we don’t mean memory size but the physical size of the cards.

The advent of the smaller USB “chip on board” technology that integrates the USB connector, the flash memory and the controller chips into an incredibly small form factor has enabled USB memory stick designers to come up with a much wider range of product options.

One of the first new products to be released using this “chip on board” solution was a card in the same shape/dimensions as a standard credit card. Various ways to integrate the USB connector into the card which preserved the card shape whilst allowing USB element to be inserted into a USB port were experimented with but the most popular proving to be a “flip out” or “fully removable” option (see the images below).

USB Credit Card Variants

USB Credit Card Variants

The credit card shaped USB memory sticks have become incredibly popular because they offer a large flat print area (on both sides of the card) to work with and because they fit neatly into a bag or wallet! At only 2mm thick they’re only fractionally thicker than a conventional credit card and despite being wafer thin they come in memory sizes all the way up to 16GB.

The concept of a “USB card” has now been extended to other shapes including a circular “badge shaped USB card” and a smaller, more rectangular version of the credit card. Again both of these give plenty of space to support the printing of high quality logos or designs but they’re also small enough to be worn as a “button badge” or a conventional name badge.

USB Badges

All of these “card” options are held in stock in the UK by USB2U and can therefore be supplied (printed and data-loaded) in as little as 24hrs. All we need from you is your artwork, your data and an address to send your order to.

If you do opt for the larger USB Credit Card option then have a look at our gift boxes and leather wallets. Both of these can be printed or supplied blank – the gift box comes with custom cut foam for the card to fit snuggly into.

Put Your Branded Memory Stick Spend On A Credit Card In 2010

Posted by USB2U on 8th January 2010 | Permalink

Custom USB Flash Drives are now firmly established as a key tool within the Promotion and Sales industry. Whether you have a sales event or show where you want a convenient way to distribute information about your products or services or perhaps a conference where you want to hand out the event information from the event branded memory sticks are the way to go.

USB Credit Card

In fact these incredibly useful gadgets can be used in many many ways including but not limited to:

  • On-pack sales promotions
  • Competition prizes
  • Trade show “give-aways”
  • Press Launches (and lunches)
  • Product Launches
  • Staff rewards and incentives
  • Customer mailers

The most popular style or shape of branded memory stick used for these activities tend to be “stick” shaped (not as in a stick from a tree but small, rectangular shaped flash “sticks”) but there are other options!

One of the key trends in 2010 is expected to be the move to a bespoke or truly custom shape that is unique to the customer using it. Examples would include custom USB disks in the shape of a car or truck to support the launch of a new vehicle or perhaps in the shape of a company logo or brand. Any 2-D or 3-D shape is now possible and bespoke memory sticks really do up the ante in terms of brand support, brand building and product recall.

But, custom memory sticks are not for everyone. If you are looking for something a little different, a little more sophisticated with the scope to support a complex logo or design then you might consider a branded credit card USB. These come in a variety of styles and types but they all adhere to the basic “form factor” of a credit card. Not only do they support a full colour, photo effect print but they can also be supplied in a complementary wallet or case. Costing just a little more than a standard branded memory stick they are certainly worthy of consideration particularly if your target audience is ABC1.

The small additional cost is worth it in terms of the visual impact and much greater perceived value. If you are interested then give us a ring or fill out the on-line enquiry form and we’ll get back to you with a tailored quotation.
