Are We Falling Out of Love With The Branded Twister USB Memory Stick

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

For years the humble Twister USB memory stick has been the preferred choice of the majority of people buying branded USB sticks for their business, school or university. It’s relatively small size, the wide range of colours it is available in coupled with the fact that it has no cap or lid to lose has made it a perennial favourite for years but is all this about to change.

Twister USB Memory Stick

Every year companies are giving away millions of USB sticks to help promote their products or services and as a result of this the Twister is in danger of becoming a victim of its own success because we’re all getting “twister fatigue”.

The dominance of the twister model has been compounded because most suppliers tend to carry the twister in stock to fulfil urgent/last minute requests thus in effect removing any choice from the buyer if they are short on time.

To give customers more choice some of the larger, more established suppliers have improved the lead times to bring in branded USB memory stick from their factories in China. In parallel with this they have added significantly to the range of USB sticks that can be printed, embossed or engraved.

These service enhancements now mean it’s possible to get a wide range of USB stick branded with a logo and delivered in around 7 –10 days, which tends to be fast enough for all but the “last minute” customers.

So customers with at least a week or more to their deadline are now becoming more discerning about the choice of USB memory stick they choose and the results are interesting. Whilst the Twister model still remains popular (old habits are hard to break) there has been a definite increase in demand for USB credit cards, leather USB flash drives and some of the more quirky shaped models like the round “sphere” model.

These models all have very different characteristics to the twister; the credit card is ultra thin (only 2mm thick) it fits into a standard wallet and it offers a huge print area making it ideal for complex graphics; the leather models are “top-end” products that are popular with photographers and companies selling into “high net-worth customers” and the more quirky products like the Sphere just help brands to stand out from the crowd – ideal at trade shows and fairs.

In terms of units sold this year the Twister model is still likely to be “top of the charts” but its dominance is certainly on the wane.

Some Of Our Branded USB Memory Sticks Are Getting A Makeover

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Makeovers are all the range at moment. It’s difficult to switch on the TV these days without being challenged to “look 10 years younger” or “look good naked” or for the more adventurous to take the challenge of an “extreme makeover”.

Taking a lead from the more gentle, non-invasive approaches of these program’s we’ve applied the same principals to some of our branded USB memory sticks and come up with some interesting new looks and styles. Of course changing the colour of the rotating “clip” on a Twister style USB flash drive is not quite as radical as undergoing cosmetic surgery but by applying different coloured clips to the standard models that are usually supplied with a plain silver/metal clip the results are stunning.

The Twister USB flash drive has long been the best selling promotional USB drive and the introduction of these new colour options that allow you to mix and match the body shell with a “clip” in a complimentary colour almost guarantee its position as “top dog” in the branded USB memory sticks market for the foreseeable

future.

With a certain degree of irony its interesting to see that some of the first customers to embrace these “madeover” Twister USB drives include two leading cosmetic companies; Boots No.7 and Maxfactor. Of course you’d expect these brands to have their finger on the pulse when it comes to what’s current and hot in the market so perhaps it shouldn’t be too much of a surprise. For them it was the black on black option that was the winner but for other clients like the National Trust the ability to mix a metallic finished clip with a pantone matched body shell to create a bespoke look was the way forward.

Following on from the success of the makeover to our Twister Range of USB flash drives we’ve now got our designers looking at a couple more products within our Classic Range to see if we have any other candidate for a makeover.

If you’re looking for branded USB memory sticks for a forthcoming event, show or promotional activity then just give our team a call and they’ll talk you through the options.

Pinpoint Sharp Printing On Twister USB Flash Drives

Tuesday, July 20th, 2010

If you’re looking to buy USB flash drives with your company logo or brand printed on them then its critical that whichever flash drive you choose is capable of reproducing your logo as your designer intended it to be printed. If your company logo is complex, contains multiple colours and/or has graduated tints and shading then this becomes all the more important and to be fair challenging.

Twister USB

When it comes to printing not all USB flash drives are created equal with only a relatively small number of models supporting a full colour print process. One of these is the USB Twister Flash Drive, which is one of the reasons that it is the most popular flash drive on the market.

The colour reproduction on the Twister is pinpoint sharp and can easily accommodate the most complex of logos. Of course the old adage of “garbage in garbage out” applies so its important that you provide your supplier with the best quality artwork you can lay your hands on. This will typically be in a high resolution Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or Photoshop (.psd) image that is vectorised.

USB Credit Card

Jpeg images are simply not suitable to print from because they are a compressed file format and because of this information about the image is “lost” when the file is created. Whilst Jpeg images might look “ok” to the eye when they are used for printed the end results can often look blotchy and weak.

The Twister is not the only model that supports a full colour print process; others include the Chic, the Trident and the Slider. The USB credit card is also an excellent choice for complex logos because the full surface area can be used to apply a photo-realistic print.

Choosing the right model of USB flash drive for your project or event is never easy because there is lots of choice but if you do have a complex logo to print then you won’t go far wrong with the Twister.

Review Of The Twister USB Flash Drive

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Over the last eight years we have supplied thousands of customers with hundreds of thousands of branded flash drives and during this time lots of new models have come and gone but one flash drive has stubbornly remained the top choice.

Twister USB Flash Drives

Twister USB

The Twister Flash Drive has and continues to be the most popular of all the USB Flash Drives that we sell. Whether it’s to our corporate clients or to schools and universities the Twister is most commonly requested and most often ordered. The reason for its popularity is a combination of factors:

  1. It’s compact and lightweight. The Twister flash drive is only marginally smaller than most other drives but it just seems smaller but without being so small that you’re in danger of losing it. The sizing seems to be just about spot on, not too big and not too small.
  2. There’s no cap to lose. The Twister (also known as the Swivel or Rotate) takes gets its name because part of the body twists around to protect the USB connector and because of this no cap is needed and of course there is therefore no cap to lose!
  3. The Twister flash drive looks great printed, engraved or using a “dome sticker”. The “clip” the section that is printed is a reasonable size, its flat and it carries print well.
  4. There are lots of standard colours to chose from and that will compliment any brand or logo but if you want a specific colour then with the Twister Flash Drive its not a problem because pantone matching is FREE! Pantone matched Twisters look great and really help to lift the overall effect of the printed flash drive. Its important to choose a colour that compliments your logo so if you’re in any doubt ask our design team to mock up some examples for you.

  5. The “clips” on the Twister Flash drive can be changed very easily, which means you, can change the design or print at a later date without having to buy new memory sticks – you just order some more printed clips and pop them on!
  6. The “clips” on a Twister can be supplied in different colours with White and Black being very popular at the moment. Black clips attached to a black twister look particularly good if you have a nice strong and vibrant logo to work with.
  7. Attaching a lanyard or key ring attachment is easy because there is an integral loop built into the rotating clip on the twister.
  8. The Twister is the most competitively priced of all of our branded flash drives and is available in sizes ranging from 64MB to 16GB albeit the most popular memory size tends to be 1GB or 2GB.

There have been plenty of new pretenders that have tried to steal the crown of the Twister Flash Drive over the years but they have all be vanquished. For now at least the Twister is the King and nothing in the near term looks set to change this.

Twister Memory Sticks – Something Of A Chameleon

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Famed for being able to change their skin colours the Chameleon is not unlike the Twister Branded Memory stick the clip of which can be changed to a different colour or different print relatively quickly and easily.

Unlike the Chameleon the Twister USB does this not to blend into its natural habitat but rather to ensure its stands out from the crowd. Unique amongst flash drives the Twister model can be a live saver. Why? Well if you’ve ordered several hundred printed twister flash drives and you make a mistake in signing off the artwork but only notice this when they arrive then all is not lost. The “clip” that rotates and has the brand or logo printed onto it can be removed relatively easily and replaced with a correctly printed clip.

Twister USB Clips

The same applies if you’ve ordered too many Twister memory sticks for a particular event. Don’t worry any more if the information printed onto the flash drive is event specific because now rather than waste any you have left over you can simply get some replacement clips printed up for a fraction of the cost of new sticks.

If you fancy changing the colour or the overall look and feel of the flash drives then you could replace them with a different coloured clip (either plain or printed). Again this is easy to do and much cheaper than buying new flash drives. If you’re planning to change the clips yourself there is an art to doing it so that you don’t scratch the clip or bend it out of shape – give us a call and we can talk you through it.

Twister Colour Clips

Don’t worry if you’ve pre-loaded data on the memory sticks and you want to use them for a different event/show and now need to remove the data. Any supplier with USB data duplication capabilities can reformat (erase) the data from the memory sticks quickly and easily and for very little cost.

So, if you’re looking for a branded memory sticks with Chameleon like qualities and a memory stick that offers lots of flexibility moving forward then the Twister model is a great choice. Its already one of the best selling products in the Classic range sold by USB2U without all the additional benefits discussed here.
