Debt Turmoil In USA & Greece Hits Flash Drive Prices

Monday, July 25th, 2011

Even if you don’t read the business or money pages it’s been difficult to avoid the debt problems in Greece and more latterly the “Debt Ceiling” problems in the US. The US debt has reached $14.3 trillion or to put it another way $4k for every man, woman and child in the US. Unless the US Congress agrees to allow the US Government to borrow more money then the US Treasury could run out of money!

With Greece all but “bust” and the US teetering on the brink of a technical default the currency markets have been a little “choppy” to say the least! Unfortunately the core components that make up a USB flash drive (flash memory, flash controller chip and flash capacitor) are all priced and traded in US dollars so when the markets get nervous the price of flash drives can fluctuate wildly.

Flash Drive Prices in Choppy Waters

Flash Drive Prices in Choppy Waters

In an ideal world the suppliers of flash drives would like some stability in the prices so that they can offer customers a price which is valid for more than a few hours but the margins on the supply of flash drives are skinny and competition is fierce so any price quoted tends to be valid for a maximum of 3-days!

Fortunately, the longer term trend for USB flash drive pricing is downwards albeit there does tend to be an upward spike in prices in late summer when the large players (Apple, HTC, Kingston etc.) start to place their orders for Christmas stock. These orders might not be for USB flash drivers per se but the products they schedule into their production plans nearly always include some form of flash memory and a general increase in demand for flash memory ripples through to the USB flash drive market.

So, when asking for a price for printed USB flash drives don’t be surprised if the price is higher than you were quoted before or if the price is only valid for a couple of days – it’s just a reflection of the market and at the moment the instability in the market!

Branded USB Flash Drive Market Slowly Getting Back to Normal

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Prices for branded and promotional USB flash drives have shot up over the last couple of weeks with prices fluctuating by as much as 20% to 30% in a single day.

The earthquake in Japan and the subsequent concerns about long-term supply of flash memory are at the root cause of the price increases. Japan is responsible for the manufacture of around 35% of the world’s flash memory modules and in the days immediately after the earthquake the markets in which flash is bought and sold effectively saw a “run” on the price of flash.

Like any market pricing is driven as much by sentiment and FUD (fear uncertainty and doubt) as much as it is driven by hard fact and it would be fair to say that in the days immediately after the earthquake the market was in turmoil with factories and speculators driving up the price.

Branded USB Flash Drives

Branded USB Flash Drives

A week or so on and things, as far as USB flash pricing is concerned, are beginning to settle down. It would be premature to say things had returned to normal because uncertainty over supply is still a concern but the initial concerns about long lasting damage and severe shortages are dissipating.

With many companies around the world planning to use branded USB flash drives as part of their sales and marketing campaigns it’s a relief that supplies are now not only returning to near normal and that pricing is beginning to settle down.

Fortunately whilst the core price of USB flash drives at the factory gate has increased the effect on the end user has been softened a little by the USD dollar weakening against Sterling (GBP). Today the USD stands at $1.63 compared to $1.55 at the start of the year. Not a huge difference but every little helps in the current market conditions.

If you’re looking to buy USB flash drives and get them printed with your company or school logo on then the advice issued last week remains the same – if you can delay your order by another week or two then you’re likely to get a better price but, if you absolutely have to have them then shop around to make sure you are getting the best possible price you can. Do bear in mind that the usual lead times of around 10 days have increased a little as well so for safety sake add another couple of days and build this into your schedule.

Printed USB Memory Sticks for Only £1.99 (inc. Print Charges)

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

The demand for promotional USB memory sticks continues unabated with millions expected to be given away in 2011. The year has already gotten off to a flyer albeit the supply issues brought on by Chinese New Year have created a temporary challenge for many UK and European memory sticks resellers.

Now the holiday is over and the factories are back at work production is once again running at full capacity as they try

512MB Flash Drives for £1.99

to deal with the backlogs the holiday inevitably creates.

Post Chinese New year prices tend to ease a little and drift slowly downwards throughout the summer months before ramping up again as demand for Christmas kicks in. This year, the slow drift downwards, is being helped by the weakening of the USD ($) which today stands at around $1.62 against the GBP (£).

The consequence of these events means that we are now able to offer 512MB printed USB flash drives for only £1.99* each. This includes a two-colour print, free data loading (up to 100MB) and a free standard gift box (or the drives can be bulk supplied in “poly bags” if preferred).

The £1.99 applies to our “Classic” range of USB memory sticks including the ever-popular Twister USB flash drive. There are no hidden set-up charges or print charges. The only additional cost is delivery, which is a standard £10 for next day delivery by UPS.

Our lead time is 10 days from confirmation of order but we do hold lots of stock that we can print and deliver within 48hrs if you’re in a hurry – just ask one of the team for details of the available stock because it changes daily.

If you’re an existing customer, a school, a university or a public authority then you can also take advantage of 30-day payment terms on your orders.

With pricing at this level printed USB flash drives have never been cheaper and never been within the reach of companies and schools. Interested – Give us a call on FreeFone 0800 008 7079 or request a quote via our web site.

USB Flash Drives Trends – Pound begins to strengthen against the USD

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Like many products in the world today USB flash drives are manufactured in China and trade with the factories that produce them is all undertaken in US Dollars ($). So, when the British Pound (£) strengthens against the USD ($) the net effect is a reduction in the factory price of USB flash drives that are imported into the UK.

In May 2010 the US Dollar stood at $1.43 against the GBP (£) but since then the GBP has gradually strengthen to the point where it now stands at $1.62 – this 13% rise in the strength of the British Pound equates to a direct 13% fall in the cost of USB flash drives imported into the UK.

Worries of inflation getting out of control, not helped by recent VAT increases and a rise in commodities, mean we’re

USB Prices

likely to see Base Rates in the UK increase sooner rather than later. The release today of the minutes of February’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting shows growing support for an early rate increase and this sentiment has driven further strengthening of the Pound.

Of course currency exchange rates are not the only factors that determine the price of USB flash drives but they are a pretty critical one and it is one of the key reasons why many suppliers of flash drives will only hold quotes for around 3 days!

Other factors that have a bearing on the price of USB flash drives are classic supply and demand trends, for example prices always spike upwards when some of the global brands place large pre-Christmas orders on the flash memory factories. Bizarrely short terms shortages caused by local power outages (yes, they still happen in China) can also feed through to the price of USB flash drives.

Fundamentally “flash” is a commodity and traded on the markets just like coffee, gold and cereals. As such the price a customer pays can vary dramatically within is short space of time and with so many factors driving the price its difficult to judge which way prices will move.

The only sure thing is that over time prices for a given memory size will fall. They always have and always will. The challenge is predicting what happens in the next few weeks and months!

Branded USB Flash Drives Now Only £1.95

Monday, January 17th, 2011

Finally there is some good news on pricing of branded USB flash drives.  After what seems months of turbulence in the flash drive market things seem to be settling down a little and the currency market seems to be swinging back in our favour and helping things as well.

The net of the net is that the price for 1,000 USB flash drives fully printed and pre-loaded with data has now fallen to £1.95. This is the price for a 128MB version from our standard “Classic” series and includes all print set-up and origination fees and data loading fees up to 100Mb. Unfortunately because of higher UK print costs the offer only applies to orders where there is sufficient time to print the flash drives and ship them in directly from our factory in China.

So, if you’re in the market for some USB flash drives printed with your logo or brand and you’re ok to wait a couple of weeks for them then now is an excellent time to be placing an order.

If you’re a new customer you won’t have to pay for your branded USB flash drives until the day before we deliver them to you. If you’ve ordered from us before then subject to a credit check we’ll be able to supply them to you on 30-day payment terms – just speak to your account manger about a Trade Account application.

Classic USB Flash Drives

Classic USB Flash Drives

At these prices USB flash drives are ideal for trade shows, exhibitions and press launches where they tend to be given away in large numbers. If you plan ahead and get all of your sales material, press releases etc. pre-loaded onto the USB drives then the savings you’ll make by not printing your collateral can more than offset the purchase cost of the branded USB drives.

Although 128MB flash drives are considered by some “small” in terms of memory storage its worth considering that only 2-3 years ago they were the most popular memory size sold and you can still store lots everyday files on a 128MB stick. Its only likely to cause a storage issue if you use the flash drive(s) to store large numbers of photographs, media files, and/or music files. As a promotional product a 128MB USB flash drive is still more than adequate and why pay more for additional memory that most people won’t use.

USB Flash Drive Price Trends In 2010

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

It’s always interesting to look back over the last 12 months to get a feel for how prices for USB flash drives might move during the coming 12 months. As we enter 2011 one thing is already certain and that is demand for branded and promotional flash drives is going to show further year on year growth but, what is less certain is how prices for flash drives are going to react to yet another year of rising demand.

USB Flash Drive Price Trends - 2010

USB Flash Drive Price Trends - 2010

During 2010 there were several key events throughout the year that had a marked effect on prices of USB flash drives at the factory gate and these include:

  • Chinese New Year – for around 2-3 weeks in February China effectively “closes for business” whilst it celebrates the New Year. The impact is a huge jump in demand before the Chinese New Year Holidays as customers rush to get their orders before the factories close and backlogs in shipping orders once the factories return and start up the production lines again. In the run up to Chinese New Year prices increase by around 10% – 20%.
  • The run in to Christmas Production – As production settles down after Chinese New Year there is typically a gradual reduction in price across the range of memory sizes with prices bottoming out around the month of June.
  • Christmas Production Begins – As surprising as it might sound the factories that produce flash modules and flash controller chips start to ramp up production to fulfil Christmas orders during July and August. As you might expect the increase in demand during this period pushes up prices with typical increases of around 5% – 10% being common.
  • 4th Qtr Tail – Barring any unforeseen events such as factory fires and power outages prices tend to tail off during the 4th quarter to end around 30% lower than they were at the start of the year. The price falls are more extreme for higher capacity memory drives, e.g. 16GB drives where prices fell by around 45%, conversely lower memory capacity drives only fell by around 15%.

Assuming the trends in 2011 are broadly similar then we’re about to see prices spike to the highest level they’ll be all year before a bumpy fall of between 15% – 45% during the year.

Assuming you need to buy promotional flash drives during 2011 the optimum points to buy are June or any time in the 4th quarter. Of course in “real life” it’s rarely pricing that determines when you buy your flash drives but other key events like product launches, press events, trade shows and sales promotions. At least armed with this information you are better placed to understand why prices fluctuate throughout the year and better informed when it comes to negotiating with your suppliers.

Price of 4GB USB Flash Drives Rockets 15%

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Whether you believe it or not the news from the factories in China that supply the majority of the promotional USB flash drives in the world today make depressing reading.

Following a power outage at Toshiba’s production plant on December 8th NAND flash production was disrupted for two days with the incident driving up spot prices on the flash commodity markets by around 4%. These relatively modest increases have spooked the market and many of the factories that buy NAND flash have increased their prices for assembled 4GB USB flash drives by as much as 15%.

USB Price Increase

USB Price Increase

To be fair 4GB prices had fallen significantly in the last couple of months so this incident might just have given the factories an opportunity to correct prices that had fallen too far. The net of the net is that prices today for 4GB USB flash drives are up by around 15% from last week so anyone looking to purchase 4GB promotional or branded USB flash drives any time soon is in for a nasty shock, particularly if they based their expectations of quotes from suppliers last week.

The longer-term implications of the power failure and the knock on effects on Toshiba’s production are more concerning. Some sources are suggesting that the disruption will decrease Toshiba’s monthly NAND flash shipments by 10-20%. If correct the reduced shipment volumes translate into a 3.5-7% cut in global supply albeit it will take until Jan-Feb 2011 before the impact is fully felt.

Although USB flash drives use a significant number of NAND flash chips the lions share of the demand comes from Smartphones and tablet PCs manufactures.

Prices for smaller 1GB and 2GB USB flash drives have remained reasonably static so if you are looking for promotional USB flash drives in the short term then you’re best to target quotes for the smaller 1Gb and 2GB versions but even then make sure you get your quotes in writing and be clear how long they are valid for.

Irish and EuroZone Worries Drive Up Flash Drive Prices In The UK

Wednesday, November 24th, 2010

Although the Republic of Ireland has agreed a rescue package with the EU to prop up their ailing finances and to the tackle the huge hole in the government’s finance the outlook remains bleak. Whilst some countries, notably Germany, are “bouncing back” from recession there are plenty of others in addition to Ireland and Greece that are still causing real concerns.

One of the many consequences of the turmoil in the Eurozone is the knock on effect on the currency markets. Over the last couple of weeks the Euro and the British Pound have fallen against the US Dollar. Today the £ stands at around 1.57 when a couple of weeks ago it was trading at over 1.62. Most trade from the UK with China is undertaken in US dollars so this 3% fall in the value of the British Pound has a direct impact on the cost of many imported goods including USB flash drives.

Currency USB

Currency USB

Of course, in the overall scheme of things, a modest increase in the price of flash drives is inconsequential, particularly when millions of jobs are being lost and countries and governments are being brought to their knees.

However, if you looking to buy USB flash drives printed with your logo on its useful to understand why quotes from suppliers of flash drives have such a short validity period.

Several factors influence the price of the flash drives including exchange rates, customer demand for flash products (not just USB flash drives) and seasonal factors including the Chinese Holidays. Taken together the price of flash drives is best described as “fluid” and UK importers of flash drives need to keep a close eye on market movements and fix their prices accordingly.

Most branded USB flash drive price lists are “fixed” daily taking into consideration all of the above so if you have what looks like a good price its worth grabbing it because if you ask for a re-quote a week later you could find the price has gone up. Conversely, it could also have gone down but as with most things you buy prices seem to go up more often than they come down.
