Give Out Your Wedding Photos On A USB Memory Stick

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

If you’re looking to tie to knot any time soon then you’re probably already stressed out trying to organise everything from the venue, the catering, the guest list, the invites, the photographer and the wedding dress. Add to this the music, the DJ, the cake and the flowers and it’s pretty easy to understand why they should offer logistics and people management training to anyone thinking of getting married!

As technology marches on you’ll also have to face some decisions about how the photographs of your big day are supplied to you and potentially supplied to your family and guests. We’ve already seen 35mm film cameras abandoned by professional wedding photographers in favour of Digital SLR cameras and now we’re beginning to see a shift in the supply of the photos from paper prints to USB Memory Sticks.

For some people you’ll never be able to beat the feeling of sitting down with friends and family and passing around the wedding album and collectively reminiscing about the day. But, in an age where people increasingly live out their lives on-line through social networking sites like Facebook it’s useful to have the same photos supplied digitally so that they can be “uploaded” for all of your friends to see.

The beauty of having your Wedding Day portfolio supplied on a USB flash drive is that you can print your photos out at home (as many times as you want), you can attach the photos to emails and send them to friends and family or you can upload them to your favourite blog or social network site(s). Photos supplied in this way give you much more control and flexibility and you’re not sacrificing on the quality of the photographs just how they are delivered.

The USB flash drives don’t have to be standard “shop bought” models either, instead, they can be personalised USB flash drives that are supplied in an attractive gift box and both the flash drive and box can be printed with details of the wedding day and the name of the bride and groom!

Some couples are now buying enough personalised flash drives to enable them to give them out to all of the guests at the wedding.  Each USB memory stick can be pre-loaded with either the whole wedding portfolio or tailored so that each guest or family member gets a collection of photos that is relevant to them. Loading additional photos of the bride and groom as children and during their courtship as well as photos from the stag and hen nights is something that’s also proving popular.

In the short term we’re unlikely to see the death of the traditional wedding day photo album but digital options are certainly making an impact.

Putting Serial Numbers On Your USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, June 30th, 2011

Lets face it the vast majority of USB memory sticks that are handed out by companies these days are primarily given away to promote the brand that’s printed on the USB stick. Occasionally companies will load them with sales material (brochures, price lists, tech sheets, movie clips and links to web sites) but more often than not the USB sticks are just used as a “giveaway”.

USB Memory Sticks with Serial Numbers

USB Memory Sticks with Serial Numbers

As giveaways they work well because they have a high perceived value and the people they are given to will typically use them to store and carry their own data around with them – it’s this regular and repeated use that gets the company’s brand exposed over and over again and the fact that the brand is associated with something that has real personal value helps to build strong emotional ties to the brand.

If sensitive data is pre-loaded onto the USB memory sticks it’s a good idea to consider password protecting the data or even putting some form of encryption solution of the USB memory stick. You might also want to associate every USB stick you give out to a specific person or company and the easiest way to do this is get a unique serial number printed on every stick and record who you give each one to.

USB Serial Number

USB Serial Number

Some companies that distribute their sales brochures and distributor and reseller price lists on USB flash drives do this not so much to track them if they get lost but to create different “batches” of USB sticks (determined by a range of serial numbers) onto which they then pre-load different prices lists (with differing discount structures etc.). When your faced with 500 USB sticks they all look the same so a serial number is just a bit of a safety net to make sure the right person/company gets the right information – you also have an audit trail of who’s been sent what.

For companies that give flash drives out to their employees of schools and universities that hand them out to students, serial numbers are a handy way of recording who has been given which USB flash drive – this way if they get lost (and they will) they can be returned to the rightful owner.

Whilst the examples here show every USB drive uniquely marked with a serial numbers they could instead be engraved a persons or companies name if preferred – you just need to provide a spreadsheet with these details when you place any order

Be Bold, Be Strong, Make An Impact

Friday, June 24th, 2011

What’s the driving factor for most companies when they buy promotional or branded USB memory sticks?

Are they simply buying them as an easy way to distribute information and to save themselves the cost of printing, transporting and storing sales and marketing collateral or are they looking to drive customer engagement and hopefully sales.

Is the purchase of USB memory sticks driven by the need to give a gift or “thank you” to attendees at a conference or seminar or are they being purchased to engage with journalists and the media at a press event or product launch?

Whatever the reason for buying them it’s important that companies understand that branded memory sticks are a great way to develop and extend their brand. If you give USB sticks away with a reasonable amount of storage space on them then, they will almost always get used by the recipient to store and carry their own data around with them.

Companies buying USB sticks need to tap into this on-going use and ensure any brand or logo they print onto the USB drives is bold, strong and makes an impact – this is their opportunity to develop and push their brand, not just once but, every time the USB stick is used or handed around.

Excellent Example Of Colour Matched USB Flash Drives

Excellent Example Of Colour Matched USB Flash Drives

There are lots of examples of branded USB sticks around where they’ve been purchased for the right reasons but the execution is poor because:

  • Standard black USB sticks with a black print has been chosen because they’re the easy option and a single colour print is cheaper but it’s a missed opportunity – if a companies brand colours are red and white then don’t buy black USB sticks and print them with a black logo/text.
  • Too much information is printed and it looks “squished” and difficult to read – it makes far more sense when you’ve only got a limited amount of space to work to stick to a simple but strong message.
  • Opportunities to take advantage of colour matching the body of the flash drive are missed – standard factory colours are “OK” for companies in a hurry but many suppliers of USB sticks will pantone match the colour of the flash drives – this takes a little longer but the end results are much better.

The best advice for companies when buying branded or promotional USB flash drives is to ensure they allow time to get the right USB sticks in the right colour and with a logo printed on them that reflects their company. Compromise, unless you really do not have the time, should not be an option!

Inject Some Oomph Into Your Sales With A USB Syringe

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

If your company is in the pharmaceutical sector and you’re looking for something to giveaway to promote your products or services then you might want to consider a USB syringe.

USB Syringe

USB Syringe

These syringes are pretty realistic looking albeit there is no actual needle and they work just like any standard USB flash drive. They’re ideal to give away at conferences, seminars and press events or just as a “leave behind” following customer and prospect visits. Because they’re not particularly expensive they are not going to be perceived as an “inducement” or any other type of “incentive” – understandably this is frowned upon in many sectors.

If you pre-load the USB syringes with product data sheets, research material and other useful resources (links to web sites, video clips etc.) then the USB syringes become an excellent way to inform and educate without handing out reams and reams of paper.

The beauty of the Syringe USB flash drives is that they’re really useful and they’re memorable so your brand gets good exposure and it should get good repeated exposure if the USB drive is used by the recipient to store and carry their own data.

USB Syringes

USB Syringes

Available in memory sizes ranging from 512MB all the way up to 16GB they are capable of carrying huge amounts of data. Any brand or image can be printed onto the side of the syringe and they can even be supplied in custom boxes or packaging that fits any “house style” you might have.

USB flash drives are increasingly popular as give-aways at trade shows and seminars because it’s easier for the giver (and receiver) to carry and store flash drives rather than boxes of brochures, copies of presentations, speakers notes etc. If you’re on a trade stand at a show you’ll need something to attract prospects to your stand and something like a USB syringe giveaway will help you stand out from the rest.

If syringes are not appropriate for your business then there are of course a huge range of other USB flash drives available but standard models won’t have quite the same visual impact.

Perform Laser Light Tricks With USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Now here’s something a little bit different in the crowded world of promotional USB memory sticks – a USB memory stick with a built in laser pointer and an LED torch!!

The USB stick itself is pretty rugged, it’s made from stainless steel, and has a screw-on cap. It comes in memory sizes ranging from 128MB all the way up to a whopping 16GB and it can be printed or engraved with a logo or design of your choice. The minimum order quantity is only 50 pieces.

On the side of the USB memory stick are two discrete buttons that control the laser or LED light. The red laser pointer is not strong enough to cause any harm but it is good enough to use in presentations or meetings.

Laser USB Flash Drive

Laser USB Flash Drive

An obvious illustration of how the Laser USB memory stick could be used is:

1.      Create you presentation and save it onto the Laser USB Memory Stick

2.      Arrive at your customers offices or at the seminar you’re presenting at and copy your presentation from the Laser USB memory stick onto any PC connected to the projector

3.      Run through your presentation using the red laser pointer integrated into the USB stick to illustrate any key points of interest

4.      After you’ve given your presentation if it’s dark outside you can use the integrated light to find your way to your car or read the A-Z map ;-)

If you’re running a conference or seminar and you’re looking for something to hand out to the delegates at the end of the event then these laser USB sticks would be a great idea. They could be pre-loaded with all of the presentations and speakers notes from the day together with any advertising material about future seminars or conferences. The additional laser and light features differentiate this from “ordinary” USB flash drive and make it more of a business gift.

If you’d like to see how the Laser USB memory stick might look like with your logo on just give us a call or fill in our on-line quote team and we’ll mock up a version(s) for you.

USB Flash Drives – Divided By A Common Language

Friday, June 17th, 2011

There can’t be many products that are commonly used around the world today that are referred to in so many different ways. Whilst some differences can be explained by local or geographical variances the fact that the humble USB Flash Drive is known by so many different names can make life challenging when you’re trying to buy (or sell) them!

Twister Flash Drives

Twister Flash Drives

Whilst we tend to call them USB flash drives here’s our list of the names that we also know they are called – its not an exhaustive list by any means and we welcome any contributions to help us complete this interesting and challenging naming conundrum:

  1. Flash Drive (our favourite)
  2. Memory Stick
  3. Pen Drive
  4. Thumb Drive
  5. Data Stick
  6. Flash Disk
  7. Data Drive
  8. Travel Drive

Whether you call them pen drives or memory sticks we sell them and we sell them in their tens of thousands to schools and companies with their logos printed or engraved on them.

We’ve got hundreds of different models and styles and we can pretty much supply them in any colour you want with anything you want printed on them. If you don’t find a design you like then we’ll make a custom model for you (just allow a little more time and money for fully customised versions).

Don’t forget the main use of these flash drives is to store and carry data so if you are thinking of buying to give them away it makes sense to use the available memory to pre-load your own data file on first. These files could be anything including sales brochures, technical data sheets, press releases, movie clips or price lists.

Black, Small But Perfectly Formed

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Not all USB memory sticks are born equal. Some are large, some are small, some are manufactured from plastic whilst others are lovingly crafted from brush aluminium or leather. Some only have a teeny, tiny memory capacity whilst others have a stonking 16GB or 32GB to play with.

Small USB Memory Sticks - Nano

Small USB Memory Sticks - Nano

As ever beauty is in the eye of the beholder and at USB2U we’re quite taken by these small, black Nano Slider USB flash drives. It’s the first time we’ve produced them in black and we (and the customer) are delighted with the results. The black finish on the USB stick works particularly well with the two-tone blue print and the attached black keyring attachment finishes it off perfectly!

At only 33mm x 12mm the Nano Slider is the smallest USB memory stick we supply so if you are looking for something that sits comfortably on a keyring then this is about as handy and unobtrusive as it gets.

The case (shell) colour can be produced in any colour you want albeit black we’ve decided does look pretty spectacular. Despite the small size of the Nano it can still be supplied with memory up to 16GB.

Whichever model of branded USB memory sticks you choose it’s worth thinking about loading data onto them before you hand them out to your customers, prospects or staff. The primary function of a USB stick is to hold and carry data so it makes sense to use the memory you are paying for to pre-load your sales brochures, price lists and any other collateral.

Most recipients of a promotional USB stick will plug it into a PC or Mac and will typically look at any files that are loaded onto the stick. Whether you “lock” the data onto the stick is optional but if you’re only buying sticks with a small amount of memory on them locking the data is not recommended because people simply won’t use them if there is no space left onto which they can save their own data. If they don’t use them then you won’t get any on-going brand exposure, which is one of the usual benefits of giving away USB memory sticks.

Personalised USB Sticks Make Great School Leaving Gifts

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

Whether you’re leaving primary school to join the “big” school or leaving secondary school to start life at university it’s going to be emotional particularly if you’re leaving behind friends you’ve formed a strong bond with over the years you’ve been together.

It’s often just as tough on the teachers, particularly in smaller schools where they may have taught the same class of children for several years. The last day will often end in tears for the teachers as they dismiss their class for the last time and inevitably it will be a rollercoaster of emotional highs and lows for the students as the reality of the “last day” sinks in. No matter how hard nosed you are or how much you convince yourself it doesn’t matter the last day at school will put you through the emotional mixer.

School USB Flash Drives

School USB Flash Drives

With the rise of social networking applications like Facebook and Twitter it’s now much easier than it was to keep in touch with your school friends as you move on to a new school or to start a new life outside of school but, it’s also nice to be able to celebrate your time at the school with some form of tangible gift.

Some schools and classes have latched onto the idea of personalised USB flash drives as the perfect leaving or

School USB wristbands

School USB wristbands

graduation gift. The flash drives can be printed or engraved with the school crest or name and details of the “Class of 2011” or anything that is appropriate. They can even be individually engraved with each student’s name!

The really clever bit (but it needs someone to organise it) is to gather lots of photographs and video clips (school trips, school plays, concerts etc.) of the class together with the class register, sports achievements, school awards etc. and get all of this pre-loaded onto the USB flash drives before they are given out.

As pretty much everyone has a PC these days, personalised USB flash drives crammed full with “memories” of the good times at school are a great idea. They’re not that expensive either and the lead-time to get them produced is only around 7-10 days (but allow a little more time if you want a name engraved or printed on each one).

So, if you are looking for a leaving gift with a difference then you might want to think about personalised USB flash drives.

Could You Build Your Own USB Flash Drive

Monday, May 16th, 2011

USB flash drives have permeated our lives and seem to be everywhere at the moment. Students use them at school and college for their homework and coursework, they’re commonly used at work to carry important files, data and presentations around and of course they are very popular in the promotional market as give-aways.

Most homes will have at least one or two USB flash drives of varying memory size and whilst some will be in regular use others will no doubt be languishing at the bottom of a drawer.

Today typical USB flash drives that you buy in the shops are at least 2GB albeit even this size is being phased out in favour of the larger 4GB size but, in the promotional sector, it’s still common for flash drives with only 64MB or 128MB of memory to be used.

There are lots of different styles, models and shapes of USB flash drives available but most are a variation of the original rectangular plastic design – to be fair the design of the USB stick has to reasonably similar to ensure that it can be pushed into a USB port on a PC whilst avoiding anything already into an adjacent USB port. It’s for this reason that some “fatter” USB flash drives are supplied with a small USB extension lead!

Build Your Own USB Stick

Build Your Own USB Stick

The core components that make up a USB flash drive (flash memory chip, controller chip, capacitor, crystal and USB connector) are available to buy on a single printed circuit board. The beauty of this is you can buy the “guts” of a USB flash drive and then build your own housing to fit around it – this is the ultimate in customisation project but opens up loads of scope to express your individuality through your USB flash drive.

Designing and building a USB flash drive is something that a number of schools have started to do as part of their Design Technology courses. Getting the design and aesthetics of the USB sticks right and thinking about little things like how you connect it to a lanyard or key ring, how the flash drive is packaged and what it looks like in the packaging are all key skills that design students must master.

The beauty of designing and building a USB flash drive in class is that the students will all have a fully functional, usable flash drive at the end of the project and as such its something that is likely to engage them and get them interested.
