The Branded USB Flash Drive Rush Service: Help With a Tight Schedule

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2011

Today’s world is getting faster and faster. With the development of speedier and more functional travel, devices and communication it doesn’t seem to be slowing down. This translates to every part of our lives but especially work, we wonder how we used to get things done without certain technologies that we now rely on.  We know first hand that deadlines get shorter and shorter with more and more to do; our ability and capacity are stretched to their extreme, that’s why we offer a Rush Service.

USB2U Rush Service

If you have an event coming up and don’t have the promotional material that you need or you are frantically trying to organise a conference and need an impressive finishing touch quick we have just the service for you.  Our Rush Service offers branded USB memory sticks within 48 hours of the confirmation of order.  We hold blank stock of the most popular range of USB flash drives for those that need their promotional USB memory stick urgently.

It may seem unbelievable but we really can get USB flash drives branded with you logo in your hands within 48 hours.  We have tried to make the process as simple and stress free for anyone ordering their logo USB flash drives through the Rush Service because we know that they will most likely be occupied with all of the other things that they have to plan for the event or campaign.

To achieve these timescales and to make the process as smooth as possible we do need a bit of help on the customers side.  If the artwork is ready to go in the right format, an order can be confirmed and a proof can be approved in a short time then the process can be underway in good time and the time goal can be met.  The colour of the flash drive is subject to availability but we always make sure that we have a range of memory sizes to fit your specification.

Data loading is also usually possible in these tight timescales but since we will do this in-house it will depend on the speed at which you can get the files to us, the size of the files and the availability of our data-loading machine and team.  Despite this, we will always try to accommodate your requirements, just give us a call to discuss the possibility.

Not only is the fete to get branded USB memory sticks a pretty impressive one but we have done it many times in the past and have gained much experience at it.  If this service fits your requirements for the busy schedule that you have in planning your event then just give us a call to discuss what you need and get the order for your promotional USB flash drives rolling.

DeadDrop Offline File Sharing: A Creative Use for PCB’s

Thursday, August 18th, 2011

Along with our range of branded USB flash drives we also make custom USB flash drives. Everything about theses memory sticks is customisable from the storage size of the memory chip to the shape and colours of the casing.  We have made some really cool custom USB flash drives for companies like Nike, Silk Cut, Tampax and Orange to name a few.  However if you fancy doing this yourselves we also sell the Printed Circuit Board (PCB) that make up the memory of the custom USB memory sticks.  You might be wondering why we think that companies would want to buy the PCB’s and make 100 or 200 of their own USB cases.  Well, we don’t.

Printed Circuit Board (PCB)

The idea behind selling the PCB’s is that many schools use them as Design Technology projects for their students.  At the beginning of the project they will be given a PCB and the challenge to come up with a creative case to hold the memory chip.  This is a great way to help develop the students creativity and give them a useful data storage device at the end of it.  We have recently come across another use for the PCB’s.

A very interesting use for PCB’s is DeadDrops, a growing, offline, peer-to-peer file sharing movement.  DeadDrops involves securing a USB memory chip in a discrete public place stored with some files that you want to share.  The PCB’s are usually put in wall using cement – they need to be secured quite tightly.  A wall is not the most comfortable place to access the USB drive, the DeadDrops site has a lot of images and videos with people using their laptops, quite uncomfortably whilst holding them next to the wall.  The location of the PCB can then be uploaded to the DeadDrops blog and people can visit the street of the DeadDrop and try to find the USB.  Files can then be downloaded and uploaded onto the flash drive making it an off-line file sharing system.

Rabbit PCB USB Example

Finding a random USB flash drive cemented into the wall does seem like quite an interesting discovery and it would be interesting to hook your laptop up to it to find out what was stored on there.  Although a cool concept, it is quite pointless, but it does seem to have attracted a cool community of followers.  The DeadDrops blog also shows a video of people loading some data onto a USB flash drive attached to some balloons and letting it loose into the sky.  No doubt the idea is that someone will find this, open the files on the drive, find out what it is about and be expected to release the USB back into the sky for someone else to find.

We don’t condone damaging public property for placing USB’s but DeadDrops is certainly a creative use for PCB’s and we think that many pupils can come up with cases and applications just as imaginative.  PCB’s can be supplied in any memory size from 64MB up to 16GB.  To find out more visit our PCB product page and our Branded Memory Sticks for Schools and University’s Page.  If you would much prefer that we used our creativity to develop a custom USB memory stick to give to customers then get in touch.

Will Custom USB Flash Drives Take Off In 2011

Thursday, January 13th, 2011

If there is one area in the promotional USB flash drive market that failed to take off as predicted in 2010 it was Custom USB Flash drives.

Falling set up fees coupled with greater competition, improvements in production techniques and faster lead times were all expected to lead to a huge upsurge in demand for custom USB flash drives during 2010 but it just never happened. Whilst there was a small uplift in the sale of custom sticks most companies still opted for standard factory designs that were overprinted or engraved with their logo.

Overall demand for promotional USB flash drives continues to increase year on year but it’s interesting that companies

Twister USB

Twister USB

remain steadfastly conservative in their choice of drive. The most popular promotional flash drive continues to be the “twister” model, which has been around for years. Whilst the Twister is hardly the most exciting of products it’s popular because it has no cap to lose, its compact, comes in a wide range of colours and it’s one the cheaper models available.

Custom USB flash drives are a little more expensive than any of the “standard” drives that are available but not by as much as people might think. And, if its impact, brand recall and “chatter” that you want to create then it’s hard to beat a custom USB flash drive. With millions of promotional USB sticks being given away every year most there is a real danger of a “so what” response to being given yet another Twister flash drive. Custom USB drives on the other hand almost demand to be not only used but flaunted around which is exactly what you want someone to do with any promotional product.

Custom USB drives can be fabricated in any 2-D or 3-D shape. They are available in a wide range of materials and any good supplier of branded USB flash drives or memory sticks should be able to help you come up with concept drawings and final demands from which your custom sticks will be made – if they can’t then find another supplier.

Custom USB Flash Drives

So, whilst 2010 was a bit of a false start for customised USB flash drives expectations are that they will ultimately break through and begin to pick up a much larger share of the overall market. Watch this space because it could get interesting.

Custom USB Solution for Cableduct

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Custom USB memory sticks look set to be the “big thing” in the promotional USB market in 2010 and one of the companies that’s ahead of the game in the use of a custom memory stick is Cableduct.

This is no surprise really as Cableduct have always been a company synonymous with innovation and design. They have picked up a string of awards for their cable management systems including the 2008 Innovation Award and the Electrical Industry Innovative Product of the Year award in 2009.

What better way then to show off their Cableduct system whilst at the same time providing their customers with the latest product information and pricing than to commission a fully bespoke memory stick manufactured in the shape of their best selling Cableduct system.

Cableduct Custom USB

Cableduct Custom USB

The end result looks fantastic. Not only do Cableduct now have a unique USB memory stick but its been loaded with all of their sales, marketing and pricing material. This is an ideal tool for Cableducts sales team to use during customer visits, to give away at trade shows and exhibitions or to use at any Press Event.

This really is an example of custom memory sticks at their best – the shape really does reflect the company and the company’s product(s), it will have massive customer impact and recall and it will really help to underpin the company’s brand and sales activities.

Creating this custom memory stick was very much a team effort with Cableduct coming up with the idea and concept and the team at USB2U working with them to turn it into reality and then taking care of the data loading for them.

During 2010 we expect more and more companies to place orders for custom USB memory sticks rather than standard “factory designs” that are overprinted. Not only do custom USB memory sticks deliver a “bigger bang for your buck” but the historic minimum order quantities and large set up costs associated with this type of product have all but been eroded. The only real consideration is the lead-time to deliver the completed memory sticks. Where are standard “printed memory stick” can be delivered in around 10-14 days you need to allow around 28 days for a custom memory stick.

If you would like pricing on your own custom memory stick then just give our team at USB2U a call or if you prefer complete our on-line enquiry form.

Branded Memory Sticks – Looking Forward to 2010

Monday, January 4th, 2010

Branded Memory Sticks have quickly established themselves as one of the key promotional items in the Sales & Promotion sector. Their popularity stems from several key factors including their inherent usefulness, their ability to carry a brand or logo extremely well, their small, portable size and their cost. Coupled with this the typical repeated used of the product ensures good brand promotion and visibility and the ability to load sales data and media files onto the memory stick helps justify their use.

Twister USB

As marketing and advertising budgets in a “post economic meltdown world” were slashed the demand for branded memory sticks and printed USB flash drives continued unabated. The early predictions of “doom and gloom” in the sector failed to materialise and although there have been periods of price volatility throughout the year this has not dissuaded customers from pushing ahead with their projects.

Towards the end of 2009 several key trends emerged which are likely to continue into 2010:

Custom USB Custom Memory Sticks also referred to as bespoke USB flash drives will become more popular because the historic minimum order quantities and relatively high initial tooling and mould set-up costs have been all but removed. As a result it is now possible to get a fully customised USB memory stick in a shape/design that is unique to your company, brand or product for pretty much the same price that you would pay for a simple printed memory stick
Twister USB Twister USB Sticks will continue to dominate the branded range of memory sticks. During 2009 the cap less “twister” style of memory stick accounted for over 60% of all orders where a standard factory design/mould was used. In 2010 their on-going dominance looks assured not least because its now possible to pantone match the body colour of the twister memory stick to any primary colour from a design/logo.
USB Photo-quality Printing Photo Quality Printing is now possible on many branded memory sticks and for very little additional cost. Historically it was only possible to “spot print” onto a memory stick and you paid for each colour printed. This was not only expensive but ruled out many complex logos or designs. Today many factories offer full photographic reproduction and with costs tumbling its likely this will become the de facto standard in future.
Low Quantities Smaller Print Runs of 50 pieces or less are now much more affordable bringing printed USB memory sticks into the reach of many smaller companies. The willingness of factories to support smaller batches of printed sticks is also likely to see them used for smaller conferences and seminars.
Price Volatility Continued Price Volatility will make it difficult to forward predict prices or get firm quotes that last more than a few days. Because the factories price in $ (USD) companies buying from outside of the US need to factor in exchange rate fluctuations plus supply/demand price related increases on the core flash memory components. Good advice is to try and avoid the Chinese New Year period and the run up to Christmas when the volatility is at its worst.

The one thing that does seem clear it that branded and promotional USB drives are going to be with us for sometime to come and that their popularity continues to grow. As far as memory sticks are concerned it seems that you can’t get too much of a good thing!

Branded Memory Sticks – Looking Forward to 2010

Custom USB Flash Drives Come of Age in 2009

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Whilst 2009 was another good year for the ever popular branded and promotional USB memory stick the key trend to emerge from 2009 was the growth in the sale of custom flash drives. Unlike branded memory sticks which are typically “factory designs” that are then printed on, a custom memory stick is, as the name suggests unique to the client. It’s a fully bespoke 2-D or 3-D shape that is fabricated to include a USB connector and flash memory.

Custom USB

The beauty of custom USB memory sticks is that they can be produced it a shape or design that is either a facsimile of your brand or logo or in a shape that represents the product or service you are promoting.  For example if you are an automotive company and you want to promote the launch of a new model to your dealership or existing customers then you could get a custom memory stick manufactured in the shape of the new car. This in turn can be attached to a branded keying and the custom memory stick can be pre-loaded with all of the sales data sheets, performance reviews and media files showing off the car.

Similarly if you’re a pharmaceutical company and you have a new drug to announce/launch then you could commission a custom memory stick in the shape of the drug and distribute these at the press launch and any subsequent conferences and seminars. Again the on-board flash memory can be pre-loaded with data sheets on the product, its target market, pricing, availability and any supporting presentation files or media files.

With custom memory sticks the limitations are really only defined b y your imagination. Historically the price of a custom memory sticks was a limiting factor because the factories that produce then were reluctant to accept small runs of less than 500 pieces and even when they did the set up costs were horrendous. But, in 2009 as competition for business increased and manufacturing and set up processes improved the barriers to entry reduced dramatically.  Today the price of a custom memory stick is on a par with a standard printed memory stick and in most cases the factories are now absorbing the origination and mould costs themselves.  It’s also possible to get small runs of 100+ custom memory sticks produced for only marginally more than a standard printed stick.

USB Wristband

The winner from these changes during 2009 was the end customer, particularly smaller companies that wanted a relatively small quantity of memory sticks. The only thing to bear in mind when considering custom memory sticks is a slightly longer lead time. Because the factories will have to produce a mould and physical sample the lead time extends from a typical 10 days to 21 days so plan ahead.

Custom memory sticks deliver a real “wow” factor and done well they can create a “viral” type of buzz as word goes around about the sticks. The visual impact coupled with the functionality ensures a much greater likelihood of any marketing or advertising messages getting across to target audience and just as importantly for that message to be repeated over and over again with the continued use of the custom memory stick.

During 2009 here at USB2U we saw a huge increase in the demand for custom USB memory sticks from a diverse range of clients and we expect this trend to continue into 2010. As experts in the field we are able to offer you a free consultation service to talk you through the art of the possible, to share with you the range of materials and moulding options and to work up designs for the factory to manufacture from – this is a free consultation and design service with no commitment. If you are considering a bespoke or custom USB memory stick in 2010 give us a call. We’d love to hear from you and to work with you on your project.

Custom Memory Sticks – Why?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Branded USB Memory Sticks are incredibly popular at the moment with literally millions being produced for schools, universities and companies around the world.

Their popularity stems from the intrinsic usefulness of the product itself, their perceived value, their portability and

Custom USB Disk

their effectiveness at carrying and promoting the brand of the company who distribute them or give them away.

But, in some ways their growing popularity can also dilute the effect they are purchased for. Familiarity breeds contempt and we can all get too much of a good thing. After all no matter how useful they are there are only so many USB memory sticks that you can realistically use or want.

There is no doubt that the if you are looking to distribute data; be it presentation slides, documents, video footage, music, applications etc then branded memory sticks are a convenient and handy way to do it. They are reasonably cost effective, there is a wide range of them available and they look good printed with a brand or logo on.

But, if you are looking for something that will create a “wow” factor, something that will really give your brand or product a boost and maybe get some “viral” type of discussion going then its worth considering a custom USB memory stick.

Custom USB Stick

Custom USB Stick

Once only the preserve of large corporates with big budgets and in-house design teams, custom USB memory sticks are now within the budget and grasp of pretty much anyone ordering just a few hundred sticks. All that’s needed is an idea or concept and a local supplier who is able to work with you on the art of the possible.

Don’t restrict yourself when brainstorming ideas because pretty much any shape can be produced. There are some great examples of custom USB sticks that you can see on the web in the shape of vehicles, fruit, wine bottles, beer cans, cartoon characters, erasers, pills etc. You name it and it can be manufactured.

There are also many materials a custom USB memory stick can be manufactured from including but not limited to plastic, PVC, ABS, Silicon, PET, rubber, wood, leather and metal. If in any doubt ask your supplier and get some samples so you can feel/see how the material influences the finished product. Be aware that for some intricate designs the factories may not be able to manufacture them in all of the materials available.

A well-designed and manufactured custom USB stick will engage with your target audience and deliver a much bigger boost to your advertising or marketing campaign than a standard, printed, memory stick. Do though allow a little more time for the production and do work with a local supplier that has experience of delivering custom USB solutions. They will guide you through the process, help with the design and will have access to a number of factories that can manufacture your custom sticks.

Custom Memory Sticks – Why?

Branded USB Memory Sticks: No Longer the Preserve of the Techies

Thursday, September 17th, 2009

USB Memory sticks were the classic “early adopter” product, the preserve of the “geek” or the “techie” that was willing to pay top dollar for first generation products simply because they “had to have them”.

Back in 2002 when USB memory sticks started to make their way into the consumer market they were very much a novelty, albeit an expensive novelty with a typical memory stick only offering 16MB or 32MB of storage.

Fast forward 7 years and today a typical USB memory stick has a memory of around 4GB but costs a fraction of the tiny 16MB’s that were on offer at the start of the decade. As a result USB Memory sticks are everywhere and used by everyone from kids in the junior school to executives of global companies. They are easy to use, they’re incredibly handy, they’re light and portable and people can’t seem to get enough of them.

These facets make them an ideal choice as a marketing and promotional tool. Lets face it the objective of any promotional product that carries your company’s brand is to get your company or your product remembered. If it is unable to do this simple thing then the marketing money spent on it is likely to be wasted.

Ask any professional advertising or PR company and they will universally agree that the best way to make your company and/or event memorable is to use promotional items that are useful to your target audience.
A common mistake is to try and use a niche product that very tightly focussed towards you customer or audience, e.g. writing pens for journalists, golf umbrellas for a business audience, mouse mats or bags for a more “techie” crowd. The best promotional gifts are those, which have the widest appeal and are likely to have some real use and endurance.

It’s for this reason that branded USB Memory sticks make a truly excellent choice as a promotional give away. Everyone you give it to will be delighted to receive one and will almost certainly use it.

If you’re looking to go the extra mile and really make an impact then you might want consider a custom or bespoke

custom usb memory stick

custom usb memory stick

version. Custom USB memory sticks are manufactured in a 2-D or 3-D shape or design that reflects your company’s products or brand. The USB Memory Stick then becomes unique to you. Pretty much any design/shape is possible and the end results really do look fantastic and create a “wow” factor with the recipients.

Custom USB memory sticks are a little more expensive but this additional cost (most of which is a one-off costs and is for the mould set-up) is more than recouped by the improved performance of the product in terms of brand development and recall.

Press Launches – Is It Just Content That Is King

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Lets face it if you’ve got an important Press Event coming up, perhaps to support the launch of a new product, a new service or company expansion then you need it to go well, particularly if it’s a high profile event that could impact your own career depending on how it goes.

Custom USB Guitar - Disney

Custom USB Guitar - Disney

As the Press Officer or PR Manager you’ll already be well versed at “keeping lots of plates spinning” and ensuring that your speakers are confirmed, well briefed and “on-message”. But typically you’ll also have responsibility for selecting and securing the venue, setting up the room, getting the right audience confirmed and dealing with the catering and drinks.

The content being delivered might be the responsibility of your colleagues in the Executive Team, Product Teams or Marketing Departments but co-ordinating these individuals and teams can be a challenge. Someone has to take ownership of the overall theme and messages and to make sure Q & A’s are agreed in advance. Often these events can make or break companies or at the very least ensure the success of a new product(s). It’s an overused phrase but “failure is not an option”.

Custom USB Eraser

Custom USB Eraser

Simple things like ensuring the invited audience and journalists have copies of the speaker’s notes, slides and biographies are critical. Whether these are handed out in printed form or electronically often depends on what’s being said and to whom but, increasingly USB Memory Sticks are being used to deliver the content in a format that is convenient, lightweight and portable.

Rather than just using a standard USB memory stick an increasing number of companies are using fully customised USB memory sticks as an integral part of their event. Custom USB sticks manufactured in the shape of the product being launched or to represent the company’s brand or logo really do help to ensure that the messages last in a tangible form beyond the event. If you can send your audience away informed, happy, well fed and with easy access to all the key data, messages, product sheets etc. on a handy, lightweight and portable custom USB stick then it should be a job well done.

So whilst content is undoubtedly king and no-one is for a minute suggesting a custom USB memory stick can make up for a poorly thought out or poorly delivered press event or product launch they can add a little bit of a “wow” factor when done well and they provide a talking point beyond the event that is rarely achieved with paper brochures or photocopied versions of PowerPoint slides.
