We Never Tyre Of Custom USB Flash Drives

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

BFGoodrich are one of the leading tyre manufacturers in the world so when it came to ordering a USB flash drive for one of their promotional activities they were adamant that the flash drive should reflect not only their brand but their core products – Tyres.

Standard branded memory sticks were never going to be able to do the job because whilst they are great at showing off a brand the challenge with BFGoodrich was to go the extra mile and come up with something that was not only visually excellent but was also a tactile representation of what they do and what they stand for.

Working with the BFGoodrich team we came up with the idea of a rubber USB wristband. These flash drives are a little different because they wrap around the users wrist just like a bracelet. They relatively light, easy to wear and look a lot like the charity wristbands that you see a lot of these days. But, for BFGoodrich the idea was to develop the wristband and create a unique mould so that the finished product was not only rubber but had a tyre tread on the surface.  The wristband was then produced in black and with their logo on and the end result looks stunning. In fact it looks just like a piece of tyre tread fashioned into a wristband!

USB Wristband

Whilst not to everyone taste there is no doubting the innovation behind it and the “wow” factor these custom memory sticks create. What BGGoodrich have shown is that with a little imagination you can come up with a really interesting, imaginative and eye-catching custom USB solution.

Custom memory sticks can be fashioned in 2-D and 3-D shapes and manufactured from a range of different and flexible materials. The incremental cost of a fully bespoke drive is not much more than a standard factory model but you do need to allow a little more time for the production because the factory will want time to produce physical samples and proofs for your approval. If you can afford the time and you can build it into your project plan then custom sticks are definitely worth the wait.

Customised USB Memory – Tip 4. The Manufacturing Process Explained

Tuesday, February 23rd, 2010

In the forth of the series of top tips to consider when purchasing Customised USB Memory Sticks, we explain the manufacturing.

Once you have selected your supplier (See Tip 3) it’s worth understanding the manufacturing process, as this will give you a great appreciation of some of activities and the supplementary questions that you may wish to ask. On the face of it you would assume that the manufacturing process for Customised USB Memory sticks would be simply. However, pulling back the veneer shows a complex and challenging process.

Custom USB

There are 3 hardware components that make up a Branded Memory Stick:

  • The Flash Memory Chip, which comes in various memory sizes from 64Mb to 16Gb.
  • The PCBA Board which houses the Chip, Electronics and USB Connector
  • The casing that houses and protects the USB Memory Stick. These come in a myriad of shapes and designs.

Custom USB

Your UK supplier will be contracted to the factory/s that will purchase each of the above three components and assemble them. The following is the typical process a reputation factory would follow:

  1. They will purchase the Flash Memory Chips from companies such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron, Intel or other OEM brands. Care that they do not use B grade or recycled flash memory.
  2. All chips will be tested before attaching into the PCBA
  3. Any data that needs to be added onto the USB Branded Memory Stick is typically loaded at this stage. Again all units are QA tested. A screen print of the data will be sent to the client for sign-off.
  4. The factory will purchase the housing from dedicated manufactures. Again whilst certain models look the same it is important that only quality material is used.
  5. The next step is for the factory to screen print, emboss or engrave logos onto the shell of the USB Memory Stick. This can be a long and drawn out process if completed by hard, however most of the larger factories have fully automated printing processes. A proof will be sent to the client for signoff.
  6. The factory’s production line is then responsible for inserting the PCBA into the housing.
  7. Once the units have been assembled a full QA is again undertaken.
  8. Any accessories are added to the USB Branded Memory sticks, e.g. key rings.
  9. Finally they are packing into gift boxes or bubble bags.
  10. A courier picks up the goods, which need to be cleared through the originator’s and UK customs.

This entire process can take between 7-14days

The UK suppliers should undertake their own QA process before despatching these to you.

Customised USB Memory – Tip 3. How To Select Your Supplier

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

In the third of the series of top tips to consider when purchasing Customised USB Memory Sticks, we explain some of the elements you should consider when selecting a supplier of Branded USB Memory sticks.

There are two options to consider:

Custom USB

Option 1. Selecting a supplier from the UK

Most orders for Customised USB Memory sticks are normally processed via a UK intermediary. These organisations manage the entire end-to-end process, but more importantly most will ensure that the manufacturing process is fully audited and of a high quality.Custom USB

So what should you be looking for when selecting a supplier? Of course price is important, but this should not be the primary driver. A small saving may be a false economy if end users start to experience problems when using the Branded Memory Sticks. Think of the reputational risk and the inconvenience of getting these replaced.

Whilst there is no substitute to full due-diligence, there are some simple things you can do to sort the wheat from the chaff.

  • First Check they have a proven track record by contacting previous clients.
  • Ensure there is a contact telephone number on the site and speak to a representative.
  • Ensure they are working from business premises. There is a growing trend for individuals pertaining to be companies, but working from home without the infrastructure to support you if things go wrong. An easy way to check this is by using Google Earth.
  • Ensure they only use new branded USB Flash Chips.
  • Finally do not pay for any part of the order until the goods are in the UK and ready for despatch.

Option 2. Selecting a supplier from the Far East.Custom USB

The primary benefit of purchasing from the Far East is that you can potentially save money. However, it is a complex process and would expose you to a high degree of risk. The key disadvantages are that:

  • You must undertake due diligence on the provider to ensure they are a genuine company. It seems that every contact that sells Branded USB memory sticks claims to be a factory. This is factually incorrect, at best most are intermediaries.
  • All suppliers will ask for the full funds to be transferred to their bank account before they commence any work. So a real act of faith.
  • If things go wrong it is extremely difficult to send items back to the Far East. At best you may get the supplier to repair / make good any errors, but this would take several weeks and you have to pay for them to be shipped to the Far East.
  • There are many pitfalls that could occur if the order is not correctly specified to the Far East supplier. For example, ensuring that dataload autorun is as requested by the client or are they using genuine class A USB Flash chips.
  • Finally if you wish to purchase direct from the Far East, manufacturers are desperate to secure new business and will offer heavily discounted rates by cutting many of the quality corners mentioned above.

In short, if you are an infrequent purchaser of Branded USB Memory sticks then purchase from a recognised UK supplier. If you purchase on a regular basis then it may be cost effective to purchase direct from the Far East, but ensure you undertake full due diligence and ideally visit the factory before sending any money.

Customised USB Memory sticks are getting more and more unusual

Monday, February 15th, 2010

At USB2U, we are asked everyday for unusual and wacky Custom USB ideas. People are certainly realising now that they no longer need to settle for a standard ‘Classic’ model and that Customised USB’s are much more acceptable in terms of cost these days.

Certainly the shapes and sizes we get asked for seem to be getting more and more unusual. We’ve been asked for cricket bats and balls, light switches, animals and parts of the human body!!

Custom USB’s are far more simple to produce than you’d think. All we need initially is a concept/design to work from and we’ll create a mock up to show you how the custom USB would appear.

You could even send your own hand written drawing or idea for us to work from.

Our talented design team will then arrange a visual mock up to bring to life your idea. Once the mock up is approved we then create an actual physical sample of the product – the most common material used to make customised USB’s is PVC, but they can also be made using plastic or metal.

After the sample has been approved the factory then produces the final quantity ordered and they are shipped into the UK via a courier then direct to you. The whole process for Custom USB’s from order to delivery is usually between 14-21 days.

So, if you have an upcoming event or meeting and require something different it could be worth considering Custom USB’s. All you need to do is contact the team at USB2U and we’ll guide you through the process from start to finish.

How Do You Select A Supplier for your Custom USB Memory Sticks

Wednesday, January 20th, 2010

Custom USB Memory Sticks should not be confused with printed or engraved USB flash drives. These are standard designs that are simply overprinted with a company logo or brand and whilst they are incredibly popular they are not custom memory sticks.

A custom USB memory stick sometimes also referred to as a bespoke flash drive is, as the name implies, designed and manufactured to meet a specific customers requirements. There are pretty much no limits to what the memory stick can look like, what colour it comes in or what size it is.

Custom memory sticks can be manufactured as a 2-D or 3-D shape and in a range of different materials. The only one constraint is that the custom shape has to be large enough to accommodate a standard USB connector (so that you can connect it to our PC or Mac) and within the custom shape there has to be enough room to house the PCB and Flash Memory Modules.

Custom USB

Whilst there are lots of companies that can supply standard branded or printed flash drives there are far fewer that can or will offer custom solutions. The reason is that to get the best from a custom memory stick you really need a supplier with in-house design skills coupled with a real understanding of what is possible and the time to engage with you and discuss your requirements. Its then critical that they deliver a range of options for you and then work with the factory to produce the mould(s) and physical samples for you to approve. Unlike standard printed flash drives its critical that you see a custom memory stick in the flesh before you go into manufacture.

A lot of suppliers have neither the skills or experience necessary to enable you to get the best custom solution for your money and worst still they’ll under estimate the lead times and effort involved (by all parties) and over estimate their ability to deliver.

Custom memory sticks are truly excellent way of making your company stand out from the crowd so don’t be put off. Whilst there is some extra effort involved and they will be a little more expensive the end results can be fantastic. Some great examples of custom USB memory sticks:

USB Eraser USB Eraser – a 3-D memory stick manufactured in the shape of a classic eraser. Used by an animal drugs company that wanted to promote its new “pain eraser” drug. By playing on the wording of the product name and its key strap line they came up a novel custom memory stick that really got their message across.
Wedding Dress USB Wedding Dress USB – a custom 2-D flash drive manufactured in the shape of a wedding dress for a Bridal wear company that wanted something to grab their customers attention. The memory stick was pre-loaded with their sales brochure and some great photo’s of their dresses and gowns.
Forklift USB Forklift USB – this is a 2-D custom USB memory stick manufactured in the shape of a forklift truck. Not surprisingly it was supplied to a forklift truck company who in turn used it to promote their company at a trade show. They pre-loaded the memory stick with their sales PDF’s, links to their web site and media files.

If you are looking for Custom USB Memory sticks then find yourself a supplier that has a successful track record or delivering these in the past and ideally has worked on multiple 2-D and 3-D projects.

Custom USB Solution for Cableduct

Thursday, January 14th, 2010

Custom USB memory sticks look set to be the “big thing” in the promotional USB market in 2010 and one of the companies that’s ahead of the game in the use of a custom memory stick is Cableduct.

This is no surprise really as Cableduct have always been a company synonymous with innovation and design. They have picked up a string of awards for their cable management systems including the 2008 Innovation Award and the Electrical Industry Innovative Product of the Year award in 2009.

What better way then to show off their Cableduct system whilst at the same time providing their customers with the latest product information and pricing than to commission a fully bespoke memory stick manufactured in the shape of their best selling Cableduct system.

Cableduct Custom USB

Cableduct Custom USB

The end result looks fantastic. Not only do Cableduct now have a unique USB memory stick but its been loaded with all of their sales, marketing and pricing material. This is an ideal tool for Cableducts sales team to use during customer visits, to give away at trade shows and exhibitions or to use at any Press Event.

This really is an example of custom memory sticks at their best – the shape really does reflect the company and the company’s product(s), it will have massive customer impact and recall and it will really help to underpin the company’s brand and sales activities.

Creating this custom memory stick was very much a team effort with Cableduct coming up with the idea and concept and the team at USB2U working with them to turn it into reality and then taking care of the data loading for them.

During 2010 we expect more and more companies to place orders for custom USB memory sticks rather than standard “factory designs” that are overprinted. Not only do custom USB memory sticks deliver a “bigger bang for your buck” but the historic minimum order quantities and large set up costs associated with this type of product have all but been eroded. The only real consideration is the lead-time to deliver the completed memory sticks. Where are standard “printed memory stick” can be delivered in around 10-14 days you need to allow around 28 days for a custom memory stick.

If you would like pricing on your own custom memory stick then just give our team at USB2U a call or if you prefer complete our on-line enquiry form.

Custom USB Flash Drives Come of Age in 2009

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

Whilst 2009 was another good year for the ever popular branded and promotional USB memory stick the key trend to emerge from 2009 was the growth in the sale of custom flash drives. Unlike branded memory sticks which are typically “factory designs” that are then printed on, a custom memory stick is, as the name suggests unique to the client. It’s a fully bespoke 2-D or 3-D shape that is fabricated to include a USB connector and flash memory.

Custom USB

The beauty of custom USB memory sticks is that they can be produced it a shape or design that is either a facsimile of your brand or logo or in a shape that represents the product or service you are promoting.  For example if you are an automotive company and you want to promote the launch of a new model to your dealership or existing customers then you could get a custom memory stick manufactured in the shape of the new car. This in turn can be attached to a branded keying and the custom memory stick can be pre-loaded with all of the sales data sheets, performance reviews and media files showing off the car.

Similarly if you’re a pharmaceutical company and you have a new drug to announce/launch then you could commission a custom memory stick in the shape of the drug and distribute these at the press launch and any subsequent conferences and seminars. Again the on-board flash memory can be pre-loaded with data sheets on the product, its target market, pricing, availability and any supporting presentation files or media files.

With custom memory sticks the limitations are really only defined b y your imagination. Historically the price of a custom memory sticks was a limiting factor because the factories that produce then were reluctant to accept small runs of less than 500 pieces and even when they did the set up costs were horrendous. But, in 2009 as competition for business increased and manufacturing and set up processes improved the barriers to entry reduced dramatically.  Today the price of a custom memory stick is on a par with a standard printed memory stick and in most cases the factories are now absorbing the origination and mould costs themselves.  It’s also possible to get small runs of 100+ custom memory sticks produced for only marginally more than a standard printed stick.

USB Wristband

The winner from these changes during 2009 was the end customer, particularly smaller companies that wanted a relatively small quantity of memory sticks. The only thing to bear in mind when considering custom memory sticks is a slightly longer lead time. Because the factories will have to produce a mould and physical sample the lead time extends from a typical 10 days to 21 days so plan ahead.

Custom memory sticks deliver a real “wow” factor and done well they can create a “viral” type of buzz as word goes around about the sticks. The visual impact coupled with the functionality ensures a much greater likelihood of any marketing or advertising messages getting across to target audience and just as importantly for that message to be repeated over and over again with the continued use of the custom memory stick.

During 2009 here at USB2U we saw a huge increase in the demand for custom USB memory sticks from a diverse range of clients and we expect this trend to continue into 2010. As experts in the field we are able to offer you a free consultation service to talk you through the art of the possible, to share with you the range of materials and moulding options and to work up designs for the factory to manufacture from – this is a free consultation and design service with no commitment. If you are considering a bespoke or custom USB memory stick in 2010 give us a call. We’d love to hear from you and to work with you on your project.

Kick off 2010 with a Branded USB Flash Drive

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Have you ended 2009 on a high and want to carry forward some of that momentum into 2010? Or perhaps 2009 has been a poor year and you want to try some alternative ideas and initiatives for 2010 to bolster sales?

Branded USB Packages

Either way it’s worth considering using branded USB memory sticks as part of your overall sales and marketing strategy for 2010. Branded memory sticks are incredibly popular, useful and relatively inexpensive and they can be used in some many ways including:

  1. A “leave behind” for your sales team. Print them with your logo and contact details on and pre-load them with your sales material, product sheets, links to your web sites, sales videos and pricing information.
  2. Sales exhibitions and shows – branded memory sticks pre-loaded with your sales material make excellent give-aways at sales exhibitions and shows Not only are they better received than loads of paper brochures that have to be lugged around all day but, you can deliver much more information. You can also offset the cost of preparing, printing and transporting lots of paper brochures to the event and because you can load data onto the memory stick right up to the day of the event the information (and pricing) can be more dynamic.
  3. Press events – Custom USB or bespoke memory sticks are a great idea for any press event. The capability to produce memory sticks in any eye catching 2-D or 3-D shape really opens up the opportunities to deliver something that excites the invited journalists and fires their imagination. You can of course also pre-load all the relevant information about your press event on the memory stick making life easier for the journalist to access the information they need to write what will hopefully be a great article on your company and/or its new product/service.
  4. Product launches – stimulate the demand for your new product with a “free” or promotional branded or custom memory stick. Combine with a viral e-campaign to generate lots of “on-line chatter” and activity. Integrate into vouchers and coupon offers from the many on-line coupon aggregators. Done well these types of activities can be incredibly cost effective and delivery a real spike in sales.
  5. Conferences and exhibitions – if you’re organising an event or participating in a conference or exhibition then you might want to consider getting some branded memory sticks produced to give away. Again, simple things like pre-loading any presentation material and sales material really will help sales. Today people have an expectation of easy access to information so literally putting your brand; your product and your pricing information into the palm of their hand will help.

The popularity of branded memory sticks does not look like abating so use this to the benefit of your company and deliver a memory stick that will be well received, packed with useful information and supports the development of your brand/products.

Custom USB Memory Sticks – Future Collectors Items

Monday, November 30th, 2009

The primary objective of a well thought out and well designed custom USB memory stick is to promote the product, brand, event or company that’s its manufactured for. After all the company paying for the memory sticks needs to see a return on their investment.

USB Twisters

Today custom USB memory sticks can be manufactured from a variety of materials such as PVC, ABS, Silicon and PET. By using these materials the factories have been able to drive down the set-up and production costs without any compromise on quality. Production runs of a couple of hundred pieces are now possible and are they are only marginally more expensive than a standard memory stick.

The manufacturing process means you can now get fantastic detail in either a 2D or 3D custom shape so the design limitation is more to do with imagination than any production process. Examples of custom USB fruit, vehicles and animals abound on the Internet but more sophisticated offerings that dovetail into magazine and TV advertising are now beginning to emerge.

Well conceived and manufactured custom memory score incredibly well in terms of “wow” factor and brand association and because they are now only marginally more expensive lots more companies are opting for them.

There is also an interesting secondary market developing in these custom USB memory sticks and that is amongst collectors. Of course people will collect anything but custom USB sticks have all the characteristics of a product that will drive a secondary collectors market – they are produced in relatively small numbers, they are attractive, fun, functional, quirky and many have additional packaging and other components (key rings, lanyards, presentation tins etc) that can also be collected.

With this in mind if your are commissioning your own custom USB memory sticks its worth ordering a few extra to tuck away just in case their future value rockets. Of course if you are promoting a product or brand that plays into the collectors market(s) then you could also consider a series or range of custom memory sticks to help drive the collectable aspect of them and get some viral marketing and discussion flowing.
