Top 5 Tips For Buying Custom USB Memory Sticks

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

USB memory sticks printed with a company brand or logo on continue to be popular with literally millions of them being handed out every year. If you’re thinking of buying some for your company, school or university there are a few golden rules to be aware of before you place any orders.

Whilst it’s not a comprehensive list here are our Top 5 tips when buying USB sticks:

  1. Simple and strong logo’s work best: Let’s face it, if you’re working for a large corporate company or school then you’re not going to have a huge amount of choice about which logo or brand you use for your printed USB memory sticks. Typically not only will there be a prescribed brand that you’ll need to use but you’ll also have clearly defined brand rules and guidelines to adhere to which dictate print sizes, colours etc.

Because of the relatively small amount of space on a USB stick ideally you need to use simple logos with strong colours that create a visual impact. It may be necessary to approval to adapt an existing logo to get the best effect.

  2. You need the highest resolution you can get hold of: To get a great finish it’s essential that you use high resolution artwork. Vector shaped artwork is best because it will not lose any sharpness irrespective of how big or small you make it. Vector logos will typically be saved as .EPS or .AI files. If you have an in-house designer they’ll understand what’s needed. What you can’t really do is just “grab” a jpeg from your company web site because if you use this to print from the final printed image will look pixelated.
  3. Choose a type or style of USB memory stick that compliments your logo: OK, this sounds pretty obvious but some logos look better on a particular style of USB memory stick. Large, complex logos work better on products like the USB Credit Card but simple, clean logos work really well on smaller USB sticks like the Twister (the capless model)

If you’re not sure what the best option is then ask your supplier to work up a range of “mock-ups” for you. They should be happy to do this for you and at no cost.

  4. Don’t go cheap on the memory size: Whilst cost will of course be a determining factor it’s important to get the balance right between choosing the correct capacity and the budget available for your USB memory sticks.

If you hand out custom USB sticks with a small storage capacity there is less likelihood that they’ll get used. They are “ok” if you’re just using them to distribute data but if you want them to have a life beyond the initial distribution its important you give the user a reason to carry them around. A memory stick with little or no real or perceived storage will just end up in the back of a drawer.

  5. Don’t forget to pre-load data: If you have data that you want to load onto your branded USB memory sticks then to get it ready early. This way the data can be loaded during the manufacturing process and it typically won’t cost you anything.

USB2U Are the 4th Emergency Service For Custom USB Sticks

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

If you didn’t realise Chinese New Year was going to have such a big impact on your ability to source custom USB memory sticks and you need them now then you’re in for a nasty surprise.

Custom USB Emergency Delivery

Custom USB Emergency Delivery

During Mid-January to Mid-Feb it’s mayhem as companies and schools looking for custom USB sticks scramble to secure the limited amount of stock that is readily available in the UK. Of course if you can wait a few weeks it’s not a problem but if you need them quickly then it’s best to start looking for a supplier that has stock in the UK and can get them printed and delivered in your timeframes. Unfortunately there are very few companies that hold stock and even fewer that can print them and get them delivered in a day or two!

If you find yourself hunting around for custom USB sticks during Chinese New Year you’ll soon realise that it’s not pleasant. It’s a bit like being a parent at Christmas trying to hunt down that elusive “must have” toy for your child – you end up in a war pitted against other parents all after the same thing and all desperately hunting down the elusive toy/gift.

Of course if you’re working on a project, a show or a press event and you’re up against a hard deadline then, the last thing you need is to be told by your supplier that they can’t deliver your order on time.

All the planning and preparation in the world can’t accommodate these little “bombs” when they happen but what you can do is try and factor in a little contingency in your plans. Granted, it’s not always easy and contingency has a nasty habit of just being “absorbed” in the project.

If you do find yourself in a tight spot and you need custom USB sticks in a hurry then don’t panic. At USB2U we pride ourselves on being the “4th Emergency Service” of the custom USB  stick market. Unlike our competitors we do hold lots of plain, unprinted stock in the UK which we can print and get delivered to you in as little as 24hrs!!

You won’t have the full range of USB sticks we sell to choose from and you might have to compromise of colour and memory size but iif you are up against it or you’ve been let down by another supplier we can normally help.

Just give us a call and speak to one of our experienced sales team – they’ll talk you though the options and our in-house designer will work with you to make sure we can deliver a custom printed USB stick that not only gets you out of trouble but delights you as well!

10 Years On Some Of The Old Classic Custom USB Sticks Are Still Popular

Friday, December 23rd, 2011

We’re now in our 10th year of supplying USB flash drives and surprisingly some of the custom USB flash drive models we used to sell right at the start of the company are still being sold today.

Oval Classic USB

Oval Classic USB

They might not be being sold in quite the same numbers that they used to but we still get the occasional order for these classic custom USB drives. Part of their enduring appeal is that they’re a little larger than many of the newer (smaller) models, the core piece that carries the print (or engraving) is made from tactile brushed aluminium and when they’re printed they look fantastic.

The slightly larger physical size of these classic USB sticks gives a little more scope for printing larger and more complex images. The outer “trim colour” that runs around the edge of the USB drive can also be changed to compliment the colour of any logo or design printed.

Harbour Classic USB

Harbour Classic USB

If you’re a fan of “old school” USB flash drives then the “Harbour” or “Oval” models that we sell will be right up your street.

If you want something a little more contemporary but you need the drive to accommodate a large or complex print then you might want to consider the new USB Credit Cards – these are super thin at only 2mm thick, they are the same shape as a standard bank or credit card and you can print on the whole surface area on both sides of the card.

Despite being only 2mm thick these USB Credit Cards are available in all the standard memory sizes up to a whopping 32GB.

Whether you order classic style USB sticks or any of our more contemporary models remember that we offer free design, free mock-up’s free samples, free 4 colour printing, free gift boxes and free delivery to any address in the UK.

If you’ve not ordered from us before you might want to check out what some of our customers are saying about us on the TrustPilot review website.

How We Design & Build Custom USB Sticks

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

Custom USB sticks that are built to your design and in the image of one of your products are one of the best ways to create a buzz about your products or company and get lots of “chatter” going about what you do or sell. They’re a brilliant tool to attract prospective customers to your stand or booth at a conference or show, they make great “leave-behinds” for your sales people and they do a fantastic job at press launches and press events in generating interest.

Custom USB Nike

Custom USB Nike

Standard shaped USB flash drives that are over printed with your logo or artwork are “OK” but if you really want to grab peoples interest and get them talking then Custom USB sticks are the way to go.

Surprising fully customised USB sticks are only a little more expensive that standard USB stick but you do, understandably, have to allow a little extra time for the design to be developed, approved, a mould built and for the sticks to be hand crafted. A typical lead for a bespoke USB stick is around 3-4 weeks from concept approval.

Custom USB sticks work in just the same way as a normal USB flash drive and you can specify the size of memory used in the sticks. Ideally to get the best return from any investment in Custom USB sticks you also need to pre-load them with your sales brochures, press release information, media files etc.

At USB2U we appreciate that not everyone has access to in-house designers to develop the initial concepts and then to

work these up into 3-D CAD drawings that are then used to build the moulds from so our experienced team will work with you from idea to delivery. We have years of experience of designing and developing customised sticks on behalf a wide range of customers so if you come to us with the basic outline of an idea we can normally turn it into something special and more importantly something that will work and be functional as a USB stick.

Over the years we’ve produced custom USB sticks for a wide range of clients including Nike, Orange Telecom, Adville and Disney to name but a few. If you’re interested in getting your own custom USB sticks produced then either give us a call on our Freephone number (Tel: 0800 008 7079) or fill in our on-line quote form on the website.

Check Out These Custom USB Flash Drives With A Sporting Theme

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

Custom USB Flash drives are growing in popularity and companies that use them to promote their products and services are finding all sorts of interesting ways to use them.

Pick any market niche and you’ll typically find a number of companies that are using USB sticks in an innovative way and interesting way. On this page we’ve put up a few images of custom USB flash drives that have a “sporting theme” – they range from fully customised Nike Trainers that are sent out in a promo pack to encourage sales of the trainers to printed “Twister USB Sticks” for the ECB that have been pre-loaded with coaching videos to help develop the sport.

Football Related USB Flash Drives

Football Related USB Flash Drives

The Premier League have been using them to send out information to each club in the league and individual clubs like Fulham FC have commissioned custom USB drives in the shape of their club emblem to sell to fans via the club shop.

You don’t need to have the budgets of the Premier League, Fulham FC or Nike to commission your own custom USB sticks. Fairly basic printed versions like those used by the ECB are available for less than £2 per stick (subject to memory size and quantity ordered) and for this price typically includes pre-loading any data you want to put on the stick, the print costs and delivery in gift boxes!

Sports Related Custom USB Sticks

Sports Related Custom USB Sticks

Even if you want to commission your own shape of USB drive, perhaps in the shape of one of your products, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at how inexpensive they are these days. A typical fully bespoke USB stick is only marginally more per unit than its standard “factory designed” counterpart. Providing you order more than say 300 units you won’t have to pay any set-up or mould fees and you’ll “own” the design when the job is done.

The only think to bear in mind if you do want something fully customised like Nike or Fulham FC is the longer lead times. Standard USB sticks can be printed, data-loaded and delivered in anything from 2-10 days but custom sticks take around 3-4 weeks. The extra time is necessary to work up the design and 3-D drawings, to produce the moulds and samples and once the samples are approved to manufacture the USB sticks.

If you have the time then it’s certainly worth opting for a custom model because these make a much greater impact when handed out and get people talking about the product and brand associated with it.

Wooden Rugby Balls – Don’t Expect These At The Rugby World Cup 2011

Wednesday, September 7th, 2011

To support their “Don’t Bet On It” initiative The Rugby Players Association commissioned some Ruby Ball lookalike USB flash drives emblazoned with their strap line across them.

The finished USB flash drives look fantastic. They’re made from a lightweight wood (from sustainable sources) and the cap is held in place by a couple of discretely positioned magnets.

USB Rugby Balls

USB Rugby Balls

The product used to give the impression of a Rugby Ball was our Leaf USB Flash Drive which is just about rugby ball shaped but as you can see from the other examples shown here it works for all sorts of companies and not only those who want to push a rugby theme.

Typically, when we’re approached by customers who want flash drives supplied in the shape of a particular product or object we’d suggest a custom design simply because this way the customer gets something unique to them and they get a flash drive that exactly matches their product but in the case of the Rugby Ball the current leaf product was such a close match it wasn’t necessary.

Leaf Style USB Flash Drives - Rugby Ball Shaped

Leaf Style USB Flash Drives - Rugby Ball Shaped

Custom USB flash drives as these examples with a sporting influence show can be incredibly detailed and pretty much anything is possible. The only drawback with custom models is that you need to allow a couple of extra weeks because we have to produce a custom mould for each design and typically this goes through a couple of iterations before final approval. So, the typical lead-time of a custom drive is around 3-4 weeks compared to around 7-10 days for a standard drive that is merely printed or engraved.

A few years ago you’d expect to pay a hefty design and mould set-up cost for any custom job but manufacturing techniques have improved so much over the last couple of years that these have all but disappeared. Of course increased competition in the market amongst USB flash drive suppliers has also helped to keep prices down.

The unit cost of the finished custom USB drives will be marginally higher than an equivalent “standard factory” model but this small extra cost is well worth it because of the significantly greater impact that Custom drives make when they are handed out.

Custom USB Flash Drives - Sports Themed

Custom USB Flash Drives - Sports Themed

One of the primary objectives of any USB sticks that is given out is to raise the awareness of the brand or product its promoting so what better way to do this than to give out a flash drive in the actual shape of the product or brand being promoted.

Get the Visual Basics Right When Buying Branded USBs

Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Before some products are bought it is really beneficial to test them, for example before a car is purchased it would be taken for a test drive to judge its feel and see how it runs.  Other products however, are pretty standard and simple information suffices to make a decision – a remote controlled car might be bought just knowing the battery duration and top speed.

Some products will depend on the quantity that is bought as to whether it is tested.  For example, when ordering a meal in a restaurant requesting a taster to help make a decision would be a pretty strange demand whereas, if the restaurant was catering for a wedding a tester would be an acceptable request.  Whatever the product is, the more information that can be obtained about it, to help make the decision, the better.  This can save problems and hassle once the product is bought.

Buying USB flash drives fall into the various buying categories above.  USB2U always provide grade A chips, this means that it is a pretty standard product and won’t need too much testing – as long as it connects to a computer, lasts a long time and stores the amount of data it should then there isn’t much variation.  The quality of the product however and the look of a logo on the memory sticks makes a huge difference, it says something about the perception of a brand.

For these reasons above we offer free visual mock-ups and free samples.

USB Visual Mock-Up

USB Samples

We send out samples of our USB flash drive cases (without the memory chip) so that the quality of the product can be seen before companies make a larger purcase.  As described above this can really help when making a decision.

Visual Mock-Ups

An accurate visual mock-up of how a company’s logo will look on a one of our flash drive models can make a huge difference.  With the knowledge we have of our competitors we know that our in house design team offer the best visual mock-ups of your branded USBs in the business.  As explained above this is a really important part of the process and our in-house design team have it down to a tee.

So if you’re not sure how your logo or brand will look on a particular USB memory stick then simply fire an email over to us with your artwork attached and our in-house design team will work their magic and send you back a range of different examples for consideration.  It’s the same for any custom USB (bespoke) ideas you might have – just give us a call and talk through what you you’re imagining and we’ll work up some concepts and 3-D drawings for you.

Don’t Gamble On Your USB Flash Drive Supplier

Monday, July 18th, 2011

Having watched Jim Eastwood in the final of The Apprentice last night it’s tempting to fill this article with puns such as “when the chips are down” and “it’s a sure bet” but I’ll try and resist the urge!

These bespoke USB poker chips were designed and manufactured by us for our customer. Despite their appearance they work just like any regular USB flash drive, they’ve got an internal memory of several Gigabytes, they can hold thousands of documents and files and they connect to any PC or Mac via a standard USB connector.

The real benefit of commissioning a USB flash drive in a custom shape is the impact they make when they are handed out. Lots of companies now use standard USB flash drives that are printed up with their logo on but far fewer go to the trouble of getting USB flash drives produced in a custom shape.

Custom USB Poker Chip

Custom USB Poker Chip

Custom USB flash drives take a little longer to produce (allow around 3-4 weeks) and they are a little more expensive than standard, printed USB drives but bear in mind you are getting something unique produced and you’ll “own” the mould and design so no-one else can have flash drives produced in exactly the same shape.

Most custom USB flash drives are made from PVC, rubber or some form of silicon compound and pretty much any shape or design can be manufactured. At USB2U we’ve designed and supplied custom models in the shape of pieces of fruit, outside toilets, floor heaters, eggs, Nike trainers, fork-lift trucks and removal vans to name but a few!

Just like standard flash drives we recommend pre-loading any custom USB drive with your company information (sales data, press releases, presentation slides, white papers, price lists etc.) before they are handed out. The more information you can pre-load onto them the more printing and distribution (postage costs etc) you can offset to help cover the cost of buying the USB drive. Not only this but customers seem to prefer getting sales brochures etc. in an electronic format because they have less to “lug around” (particularly useful at trade shows and conferences).

If you’ve already decided that you want a Custom Shaped USB Flash Drive then the next challenge will be to find a supplier you can trust to help you turn your concept into the finished article. There are lots of companies in the UK that will claim they can offer a custom service but our advice is to go with a supplier that has been around in the industry for a number of years, has a proven track record of delivery and ideally ahs in-house designers that can help you with the early stages of the product design. As I mentioned custom USB flash drives take a little longer to produce so you don’t want to have to repeat the process should your first choice supplier let you down.

Green Lantern Turkey Saved By Cool Custom USB Flash Drives

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The critics have almost universally panned Green Lantern, the movie based on DC’s ages old comic book, launched in the UK last week. At a cost of £200 million the backers of the film must be hoping that the public will largely ignore the ravaging from the reviewers and turn out to watch the film anyway.

DC Entertainment, home to such iconic DC Comics properties as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman must have had high expectations when the film was given to Martin Campbell to Direct. Campbell was responsible for Casino Royal and the Legend of Zorro but Green Lantern relies heavily on CGI effects and this is not a format that Campbell has worked with before. Unfortunately this shines though in the results on the screen.

o coincide with the launch Mimoco, a Boston-based design house and creators of the MIMOBOT® line of designer USB flash drives teamed up with Warner Bros. (on behalf of DC Entertainment) and have introduced a range of USB flash Drive based on a number of the characters from the Green Lantern movie.

The Green Lantern Flash Drives are great, they’re cute, they’re a little wacky looking and they’re a success, which arguably is more than you can say about the film itself.

Of course you don’t have to be Warner Bros to commission your own range of USB flash drives. Whilst Mimoco have done an excellent job in designing these flash drives for Warner Bros here at USB2U we’ve designed and produced hundreds of custom USB flash drives for out customers for all sorts of events and activities.

Examples include USB guitars, USB fork-lift trucks, USB eggs, USB erasers and USB toilets to name but a few. Custom USB flash drives are an excellent way to increase awareness, to grab people’s attention and to get some “chatter” (virtual and real) going around abut your event and or product.

Compared to standard USB flash drives that are printed or engraved with a logo Custom USB drives are a little more expensive and they take longer to manufacture but the small incremental cost and the slightly longer lead time is definitely worth it if you want create a real “wow” factor when you hand them out.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a design finalised, we have our own in-house design team with years of experience who can work with you to design a custom USB drive for you.

A Custom NHS Reform Calls for Custom USB Drives

Wednesday, June 15th, 2011

The NHS reform has recently had a lot of media coverage, but what’s it all about?  The Coalition Government announced a proposed NHS reform last summer and it consequently received a lot of criticism.  The original proposition included opening the NHS up to allow for promoted competition in the form of private companies, passing the responsibility of the budgets and purse strings over to GP’s and to roll it out quickly to be in full effect by 2013. USB2U has already provided a wide range of medical USB branded flash drives from our classic pill drive to a customised branded syringe drive for Boots.  All of these drives were pre-loaded with marketing content designed to lobby and sell to potential customers.  A branded USB packed with marketing information and sales material would be a great idea for private companies to lobby to GP’s to provide medical services for the NHS.

Substantial criticism caused by the proposition lead to an independent review.  The review suggested the following amends to the original proposition: to have managed competition as opposed to more promoting competition, nurses and hospital doctors would also be included in the control of the budgets alongside GP’s and the roll-out would be slowed down and the consortia of nurses, doctors and GP’s take control in areas of the UK where they can.  As the review has called for a more managed approach to competition in the NHS it will take additional marketing touches like a branded USB drive packed with pre-loaded marketing material to stand out and secure the business.

Yesterday David Cameron spoke about the independent review of the original proposal.  He said that although the reforms general aim of wanting better care for patients was kept, the details and how that is achieved has changed.  Surprisingly the prime minister admitted that they had made mistakes in their proposal, but they had called for the review and they were amending the proposal accordingly.

Similarly to the new aim for the NHS, ours is to meet the individual needs of our customers whatever the purpose and shape of the USB drive.
