See Your Data With the USB Flash Bag

Posted by USB2U on 31st August 2011 | Permalink

Like any company trying to be efficient and pro-active as possible we like to keep on top of the industry news. Some news is important and will impact business quite a lot. For example, in the promotional USB memory stick industry the price of flash drives is very volatile and can largely affect the price of the memory sticks.  Other news such as advances in the largest size of flash memory put into a USB pen drive is less likely to have an immediate impact on business.

The USB flash drives is a product that is played with quite a bit by professional and amateur designers and engineers so it is very interesting to see the new uses and aesthetics of new prototypes or concepts.  Our newest find is called the ‘USB Flash Bag’ by designer Mac Funamizu and allows the user to see the data saved onto the small USB memory stick.  Lights underneath the glass shell shows the user how much capacity the drive has used and how much is left, different colours are assigned to a different file type so you can see how much data saved is videos, documents, photos, music etc.  The USB flash drive will also show use the lights to represent the data moving from the computer to the flash drive as it transfers and settles in place.  There is also a cylinder and donut or pie chart design for the drives that would serve the same purpose.

This is a very innovative design for a USB memory stick however; we are not sure how well it would serve as a branded USB flash drive.  Unless the lights could be programmed to show a company’s logo, which would cost a pretty penny, there is not much space on the drive to brand it.  Unfortunately many of the new designs and concepts of USB flash drives are not ideal for the promotional USB memory stick industry.

We understand that most of our customers are looking for something and impressive drive branded with their logo that will make an impact when it is given to prospective customers or existing clients.  For this reason we carefully select the products most relevant for the purpose.

If a little more impact than a logo USB flash drive is needed the ‘USB Flash Bag’ could be given to customers instead.  However, we offer a Custom USB Memory stick service, which is something a little more useful and unique than the flash bag.  The shape, colours, material and memory size can all be customised to suit the needs of the company and make the necessary impact.  Go on! Give our professional in-house design team the chance to add to the creative USB memory stick designs.

How to Choose Your Custom USB Flash Drive Memory Size

There are a lot of decisions to make when buying something new and technology is no different. In fact, buying a technical item is probably one of the hardest, you have to learn about then product and what is important in all of the gigahertz, megabytes and processor figures that are thrown at you.

disk utility screen shotWe are well aware that buying branded USB memory sticks is no different and can be a bit of a minefield.  The first problem is choosing the right promotional USB memory stick company but with the product range, service and standard offers that we give all of our customers we don’t think that is a hard decision to make.  The next problem is choosing the style, memory size, quantity and services that you want to make your logo USB flash drives personal for your customers and right for your company.

One of the biggest factors impacting the price of the USB stick is the memory size on the flash drive (to see more information about what impacts the cost of flash drives see one of our previous articles: Why do small quantities of USB flash drives cost so much?).  We find that most customers have problems choosing the right memory size for their USB.  So, if you are one of these customers, we have made three points to consider when choosing the right amount of megabytes or gigabytes in your logo USB flash drive.

  1. USB Data Loading – One of the first things to consider is whether you want to have sales and marketing information or any files pre-loaded onto your flash drives.  If this is the case then the size of the files will help you work out the minimum flash drive memory that you need to accommodate for the information size.
  2. USB Flash Drive Use – What is the purpose of the promotional USB flash drive?  If they will be used purely as a promotional handout then a 256MB or 512MB flash drive might be appropriate.  However, if the branded flash drives are for customers to use repeatedly or for internal employee use then anything from 1GB up to 16GB or in some cases 32GB.
  3. Brand Exposure – Smaller memory flash drives are least likely to be used and sometimes even thrown away by customers once they have viewed the files and discovered that they are a low capacity flash drive.  In contrast larger sized flash drives will be of much more use to customers and most likely be re-used gaining much more brand exposure to the customer and others.

The points above should hopefully help you work out the exact size of the flash drive size that you need for your promotional flash drive and if not, at least point you in the right direction.  That should make at least one decision in buying your perfect custom USB flash drives easy, now you just have to pick the model, services and quantity…

How Do You Select A Supplier for your Custom USB Memory Sticks

Custom USB Memory Sticks should not be confused with printed or engraved USB flash drives. These are standard designs that are simply overprinted with a company logo or brand and whilst they are incredibly popular they are not custom memory sticks.

A custom USB memory stick sometimes also referred to as a bespoke flash drive is, as the name implies, designed and manufactured to meet a specific customers requirements. There are pretty much no limits to what the memory stick can look like, what colour it comes in or what size it is.

Custom memory sticks can be manufactured as a 2-D or 3-D shape and in a range of different materials. The only one constraint is that the custom shape has to be large enough to accommodate a standard USB connector (so that you can connect it to our PC or Mac) and within the custom shape there has to be enough room to house the PCB and Flash Memory Modules.

Whilst there are lots of companies that can supply standard branded or printed flash drives there are far fewer that can or will offer custom solutions. The reason is that to get the best from a custom memory stick you really need a supplier with in-house design skills coupled with a real understanding of what is possible and the time to engage with you and discuss your requirements. Its then critical that they deliver a range of options for you and then work with the factory to produce the mould(s) and physical samples for you to approve. Unlike standard printed flash drives its critical that you see a custom memory stick in the flesh before you go into manufacture.

A lot of suppliers have neither the skills or experience necessary to enable you to get the best custom solution for your money and worst still they’ll under estimate the lead times and effort involved (by all parties) and over estimate their ability to deliver.

Custom memory sticks are truly excellent way of making your company stand out from the crowd so don’t be put off. Whilst there is some extra effort involved and they will be a little more expensive the end results can be fantastic. Some great examples of custom USB memory sticks:

USB Eraser USB Eraser – a 3-D memory stick manufactured in the shape of a classic eraser. Used by an animal drugs company that wanted to promote its new “pain eraser” drug. By playing on the wording of the product name and its key strap line they came up a novel custom memory stick that really got their message across.
Wedding Dress USB Wedding Dress USB – a custom 2-D flash drive manufactured in the shape of a wedding dress for a Bridal wear company that wanted something to grab their customers attention. The memory stick was pre-loaded with their sales brochure and some great photo’s of their dresses and gowns.
Forklift USB Forklift USB – this is a 2-D custom USB memory stick manufactured in the shape of a forklift truck. Not surprisingly it was supplied to a forklift truck company who in turn used it to promote their company at a trade show. They pre-loaded the memory stick with their sales PDF’s, links to their web site and media files.

If you are looking for Custom USB Memory sticks then find yourself a supplier that has a successful track record or delivering these in the past and ideally has worked on multiple 2-D and 3-D projects.

Logo USB Custom Memory Sticks – What & Why?

Posted by USB2U on 29th October 2009 | Permalink

If you’re considering getting some USB memory sticks with your logo printed on them then why not take it one stage further and get a memory stick produced in the shape of your logo!

It’s true that the most popular approach is to simply print a brand or logo onto a standard factory designed stick but with the cost of custom memory sticks falling its now pretty much possible to make a memory stick in the shape of anything.

Here are some excellent examples of custom USB sticks made in the shape of a logo:

We specialise in working with our customers to produce customised memory sticks and whilst you need to allow an extra couple of weeks for the production process the overall effect can be amazing.

Don’t get put off by concerns about the costs either. Historically custom USB sticks were very expensive because the factories charges high initial set up fees and mould fees but today with so much competition in the market these are negligible.

Clearly a custom USB stick in the shape of your logo will be unique to you and really help with brand development and exposure. They also tend to create a strong “viral” marketing effect as they generate quite a lot of chatter and discussion.

If you’re interested get in touch with our sales team, send us over your logo and our in-house designers will work up some ideas and concepts for you.
