Discovering USB 2.0

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

There is a growing trend for custom USB devices, and more people are keen to learn USB basics.  In order to fully understand custom USB needs, users should consider software available.  USB 2.0 was created in 2001.  There was a complete change in the input/output protocol which allows for much higher speeds than the older versions.  The goal was to broaden the range of external peripherals that can be used on a computer.  It is said to be up to 40 times faster.

Many people wonder how they can tell if USB 2.0 is already installed on their computer.  You can open the device manager and expand the USB section.  There should be an enhanced USB controller present.   This may be different for Windows, because their drivers are not provided directly from Microsoft.  Two standard version USB controllers should be noted as well.  These are embedded in the USB chip.

If you are wondering where to find the latest custom USB device drivers, a good place to start is by going to Touchstone Software.  Your system drivers will be scanned for free.  Your system drivers will be compared to over 90,000 drivers in their system to see if you have the latest drivers possible.

Do you need USB 2.0?  Almost any peripheral you will plug in these days has a 2.0 USB version.  You can buy a multimedia PC with all the gadgets and you will still need something USB, so 2.0 is definitely recommended.  High speed devices that you will use will have a high-speed logo on its packaging.  These products can enter high speed mode as long as your system supports it.

USB 2.0 is very versatile with today’s programs and forever-changing applications.   Former versions of this program had problems meeting bandwidth requirement.  Most things run more efficient with 2.0. One factor that may slow down your speed is the use of a USB hub.  There is a delay that is added by the hardware hub.    This makes transactions not handled as fast as they would if connected to the host directly. So, if several devices are connected to the hub and being used at the same time, they are sharing the bandwidth.

USB 2.0 is very universal.  It will work with virtually any peripheral.  You can also run this with various versions such as USB 1.0 and 1.1.  It runs at very high speed for people’s application needs.  There really is no downside to using this USB version.  There are a lot of questions from people regarding whether to get USB 2.0 or FireWire.  FireWire is said to give the best performance, but the USB 2.0 drive is said to be better when it comes to convenience and compatibility between multiple computers.  The other advantage is that almost all computers have a USB port. USB 2.0 appears to be the way to go.

If you have any questions you can find all the support and help that you need online.  Most computers that are recent will be equipped with 2.0.  If your computer is not and you are unable to tell, your computer technical support contact can tell you.  There are many online forums and sites dedicated to USB 2.0 as well.

Laptop Computers and USB

Wednesday, July 8th, 2009

One thing many people often wonder when buying a laptop is whether it comes with USB ports, and it is good to know that these ports have become pretty standard on most modern laptop computers.  Now are the days that the laptop is becoming even more like a regular desktop computer.  When buying a laptop, make sure to confirm whether your USB port is 1.0 or 2.0.  This will determine your peak throughput.

Having a USB port on a laptop holds many advantages for its users.  It allows for many types of devices to be hooked up without the need for a different port or connector.  As well as customised USB devices, USB port uses on laptops include things such as: external storage, scanner, MP3 player, network adaptor and digital camera.  These are just the more common uses for a USB port on a laptop computer!  There are many, many less common uses as well.

Many people decide to have more than one USB port installed on their laptop.  When thinking about it, most ports are only able to support one or two different items for your computer.  If you have a few more USB ports, you can run just about anything that you are going to need, without the hassle of having ports that are only able to handle one or two different devices.  Many people gain multiple USB ports by connecting a USB hub with up to seven USB ports.  As customised USB devices grow in popularity, ports are used more than ever.

As most computer savvy people know, the USB port is very universal these days, due to the fact that most peripherals now have USB connectors.  If a device does not have a USB connector, you can buy an adaptor to convert your connectors to be compatible.

Do not be afraid of buying a laptop due to the fact that it is small, giving many the misconception that it can not handle many applications and devices.  Today this is not true!  With the USB abilities out there, the amounts of devices you can use with a laptop are virtually endless!  Customised USB applications can be used with no trouble on a suitably equipped laptop.

If you are unsure of how to use your USB capabilities and devices with your laptop, there are many places to gain knowledge online.  There are many technical sites dedicated to laptops and USB ports, as well as customised USB in general.  You can join forums and seek support and help that way as well.

The laptop that is equipped with USB compatible devices can be convenient for everyone.  The people that are being targeted the most are business people, as laptops are so practical for commuters.  You can do just about anything on your computer while you are on train, in a taxi, or just on the go.  The regular use of USB with laptops has opened up a whole new world of convenience and ease for people who need their computers in everyday life to get their job done.  There are few limitations with modern laptops, go ahead and choose the right one for you with no worries!
