Are We Falling Out of Love With The Branded Twister USB Memory Stick

Thursday, November 10th, 2011

For years the humble Twister USB memory stick has been the preferred choice of the majority of people buying branded USB sticks for their business, school or university. It’s relatively small size, the wide range of colours it is available in coupled with the fact that it has no cap or lid to lose has made it a perennial favourite for years but is all this about to change.

Every year companies are giving away millions of USB sticks to help promote their products or services and as a result of this the Twister is in danger of becoming a victim of its own success because we’re all getting “twister fatigue”.

The dominance of the twister model has been compounded because most suppliers tend to carry the twister in stock to fulfil urgent/last minute requests thus in effect removing any choice from the buyer if they are short on time.

To give customers more choice some of the larger, more established suppliers have improved the lead times to bring in branded USB memory stick from their factories in China. In parallel with this they have added significantly to the range of USB sticks that can be printed, embossed or engraved.

These service enhancements now mean it’s possible to get a wide range of USB stick branded with a logo and delivered in around 7 –10 days, which tends to be fast enough for all but the “last minute” customers.

So customers with at least a week or more to their deadline are now becoming more discerning about the choice of USB memory stick they choose and the results are interesting. Whilst the Twister model still remains popular (old habits are hard to break) there has been a definite increase in demand for USB credit cards, leather USB flash drives and some of the more quirky shaped models like the round “sphere” model.

These models all have very different characteristics to the twister; the credit card is ultra thin (only 2mm thick) it fits into a standard wallet and it offers a huge print area making it ideal for complex graphics; the leather models are “top-end” products that are popular with photographers and companies selling into “high net-worth customers” and the more quirky products like the Sphere just help brands to stand out from the crowd – ideal at trade shows and fairs.

In terms of units sold this year the Twister model is still likely to be “top of the charts” but its dominance is certainly on the wane.

Credit Card Memory Sticks – Thin, Thinner, Thinnest.

Thursday, September 23rd, 2010

USB Memory Sticks in the shape of a Credit Card are all the rage at the moment with sales growing week on week. One of the underlying reasons for growth in demand is the increasing thinness of the credit card USB’s. When they were first launched a couple of years ago the credit card flash drives were still a little “chunky” and whilst they were the same width and height of a credit card they were around twice the thickness of a bankcard.

With continued innovation and miniaturisation in the flash chip and flash controller industry its now possible to manufacture USB credit cards that are only 2mm thick which makes them comparable for standard credit cards. These ultra slim cards include a USB flash memory module, a USB flash controller chip and a USB interface to allow the card to be connected to a PC or Mac.

Despite the slim nature of these USB cards there is no compromise on quality or performance and they are available in memory sizes ranging from 512MB all the way up to 16GB.

Unlike traditional USB sticks, which tend to be “rectangular” and attached to a lanyard or key ring the USB credit card memory sticks can be popped into a wallet, bag or purse alongside any other card(s) you might be carrying.

For the companies wanted to buy USB memory sticks printed with their logo, brand(s), web address, contact telephone

numbers etc. the USB cards are perfect. Traditional USB sticks are simply too small to carry much more than a simple logo or brand without reducing the design/text down to a size where they become difficult to read. USB credit cards on the other hand offer plenty of space to print complex design and lots of narrative and still they are still readable. In fact full colour prints across the whole surface of both cards are not only “doable” but also they look fantastic.

The combination of a shape that people are familiar with and are used to carrying around coupled with the ability to print complex images on them has catapulted the USB credit card into the “Top 5” most requested branded USB flash drives.

Although USB credit cards are marginally more expensive than standard models if you pre-load the cards with your sales material, brochures, prices lists, presentation files, media files and so on you can offset a significant chunk of the cost by printing less paper documents (as well as saving the haulage and storage costs of these printed documents)

So, if you are looking for a USB Memory Stick that will comfortably carry a complex logo and look great whilst doing it then you need to add the credit card version to your shortlist.

Credit Card USB Flash Drives – 2mm Thick

Monday, September 13th, 2010

Branded and promotional USB flash drives have come a long way over the last 10 years and a great illustration of just how much they have evolved is the USB Credit Card. Ten years ago USB flash were still fairly new products used only by classic “early adopters” who were willing to pay a premium to be the first to own and use them.

These early generation USB memory sticks offered very limited memory storage capacity compared to the versions we take for granted today; 16MB and 32MB were the most commonly used memory sizes compared to 1GB to 4GB today. This is a huge increase in the amount of storage on offer for relatively little money but equally striking is the way in which the designs and styles on offer have changed.

First generation USB flash drives were typically large rectangular lumps of plastic that were “functional” rather than developed to win any design awards. But, as companies started to use them to promote their business by printing logo’s and brands onto them more effort was put into the aesthetics to underpin this burgeoning side of the USB flash market.

From a small fledgling business the promotional and branded USB memory sticks market has flourished into a huge global phenomena with millions of promotional USB flash drives produced and printed every month. Today USB flash drives are used to promote, reward, incentivise, disseminate information or to simply say “thank you”. They are incredibly popular amongst companies exhibiting at trade shows, fairs and conferences or to support new product launches.

As you might expect the manufacturers that design, develop and produce the branded USB flash drives are constantly competing with each other to bring new concepts and designs to the market in an on-going effort drive the market forward and to respond to the demand from the market for more stylish and innovative products. Over the past couple of years this has seen the introduction of the USB Key (flash drives in the shape of a key), leather USB flash drives, lanyard USB Flash Drives and more recently a range of brushed aluminium Credit Card USB that are only 2mm thick!

The Credit Card USB flash drives have been incredibly well received for a number of factors:

  1. At only 2mm thick and with the same dimensions as a standard “credit card”, bank card or ATM card they fit neatly into any wallet or bag designed to accommodate standard bank cards. A branded USB credit card that has “share of wallet” with other notable financial brands is no bad thing either!
  2. The flat surfaces of the card allow for the printing of large and complex designs that could not be printed on regular shaped USB drives
  3. USB credit cards look and feel more expensive than regular USB flash drives and just the aesthetics drive demand.

If you’re thinking of buying branded USB memory sticks for your business they its worth thinking about the Credit Card models that are now available.
