Pantone Matching On USB Flash Drives – Not an Exact Science

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

If you want to make an impact with your printed promotional USB flash drives then one option available to you is to colour match, or pantone match as its commonly referred to, the body shell of the USB flash drive.

Most USB flash drives are manufactured in a range of standard colours with some of the more popular models like the Twister USB flash drive typically available in around 20 different colours. Obviously, the more standard colours there are available for a given model, the more likely it is that you are going to find a colour that works with, and compliments your company or school logo.

But, if you want a specific colour for your USB flash drive then the only option is to find a supplier not only willing to produce the flash drive in your preferred colour but to find one that is able to do it at a reasonable price. Pantone matching or colour matching the plastic that forms the shell of your chosen flash drive is a manual process, its adds time to the manufacturing schedule and it is not an exact science. These are all elements that build in cost and often the cost of pantone matching can be high, particularly if you only order a small number of USB flash drives – this is simply because some of the fixed costs involved in creating the specific colour of plastic to be used in the manufacture of your flash drive are amortised over a small number of USB sticks.

pantone colour book

The basic principle of pantone matching is that each final “mixed” colour is given a number (a pantone number) thus ensuring that this colour can be repeated over and over again by a printer to ensure consistency of print/colour. Pantone matching is the way in which companies manage consistency of brand and their brand logo. For example, every time you see the Coca Cola red it is the same red irrespective of where you are in the word, it’s the same with the Ford Motor Car Company blue or the Starbucks Coffee green. Consistency of colour and of brand representation is incredibly important to build consumer awareness, association and confidence.

However, a word of warning, even when you use pantone matching there is always going to be the possibility of minor colour variations because paint and dyes react different depending on the material they are applied to or mixed in with.  When pantone matching the plastic body shell of a USB flash drive there are three main issues to consider:

  1. The colour matched plastic used to form the shell of the flash drive body is mixed by hand so the end result is largely down to the experience of the individual undertaking the mixing.  Typical results are excellent but because it’s largely a manual process there is room for interpretation to creep into what many expect to be an exact science.
  2. Repeat orders of the same pantone matched USB flash drives may not be exactly the same. Because the process to create a pantone matched flash drive relies on a human to mix the colours with the core plastic material and it’ s therefore possible for there to be minor colour variations between each batch produced – this is no different from than when you buy rolls of wallpaper or some specialised paints -  batches will vary so be prepared for this. If you cannot accept any colour variations no matter how small from one batch to the next then consider buying blank “shells” from which future orders can be made.
  3. Pantone matched inks and dyes look different depending on the underlying material and colour they are applied to. So, if you are using a pantone matched ink and applying it to a white plastic it will look different compared to when the same ink or dye is applied to a silver metal clip (like the type used to form the out piece of the popular Twister USB flash drive)

Pantone matching promotional USB flash drives can create fantastic results and you’ll end up with a flash drive that is unique to your company but do be aware of the above “health warnings”. Although pantone colour coding was introduced to help reduce and ideally eradicate colour variations the reality is that minor colour variations will always occur when you are manufacturing a product that involves some degree of “manual” work and where the finished colour is applied to anything other than white paper.

Spring has Definitely Sprung and USB Flash Drives Are Flourishing

Monday, March 28th, 2011

What a difference a few weeks make. It seems only yesterday that we were facing blizzard conditions with airports and roads closed and much of the UK’s infrastructure coming to a standstill. Look out of the window today and what a difference – the sun is up, temperatures are rising and despite all the doom and gloom about the economy, there’s a really positive feel in the air.

Spring is also a time when trade shows and trade fairs kick-off with a vengeance. Look at the schedule of forthcoming shows and you’re see a crammed diary with shows covering all manner of topics an subjects including flower shows, caravan fairs and birdwatching to name but a few. As we drag ourselves out of our “winter hibernation” many of the shows have a real Spring feel to them.

The exhibitors at these show and fairs invest huge sums of money to attract potential customers to their stands with the typical cost of attending a national show running into many thousands of pounds. For the larger companies a show budget running into six figures is not unusual.

Spring USB Flash Drives

Spring USB Flash Drives

The majority of the costs are taken up by fees to the shows organisers (space fees) and the costs of the booth or stand. Small “extras” at the show like power sockets, signage, carpets and build costs also add significantly to the typical spend.

Much of the job of driving customers to the shows tends to be left to the shows organisers but once the attendees are in the show halls its down to the exhibitors to get their stand to draw in the customers. Some companies will rely on the compelling nature of their products or offer to draw the customers in, others will be confident in the sales skills of their staff to lure customers to the stand but for many they’ll combine these with a “giveaway” that can be picked up on the stand.

Typical show giveaways include printed bags, promotional sweets (again, often branded with a logo), soft drinks, caps, pens and stress balls. Another technique is to run a business card draw for a larger gift like an iPad or iPhone – show attendees are simply encouraged to hand over a business card which in turn is included in the prize draw.

Another promotional product that is finding favour with exhibitors is the branded USB flash drive. These are customised versions of a standard flash drive that can be printed with the exhibitors company logo, phone number and web address and more importantly they can be pre-loaded with the exhibitors sales brochures, price lists, product images, video clips and audio files.

The beauty of the branded USB flash drive is that it has a high perceived value, it will, without doubt, be popular and attract customers and its costs can be offset by the saving made by not printing and transporting brochures etc. Unlike other “giveaways” that frequently end up in the bins outside of the exhibition halls USB flash drives will be kept and will, in most cases, be used again and again so any company using them will be assured on on-going brand exposure.

Whilst promotional products and giveaways typically account for less than 5% of a show budget it’s important that this spend works and is effective not only during the show but also ideally after the show. Branded USB flash drives deliver on this aspiration hence why more and more of them will be given away at trade show and fairs this year.

Black and Yellow – A Huge Hit (and with USB Flash Drives)

Tuesday, March 8th, 2011

Love it or hate it (and I guess it’s a song that has a resonance with a certain age group) the song Black and Yellow has been a massive hit around the world. The song was released by American black rapper Wiz Khalifia on September 14th 2010 and reached No 1 on the US Billboard Charts in February 2011. So far over 2.5 million digital copies of Black and Yellow have been sold.

The song’s title pays homage to the colours of the City of Pittsburg and its various sports teams who mostly play in “black and yellow” strips. The most notable being the Pittsburg Steelers, the City’s local football team.

In the branded USB Flash Drive market the colours Black and Yellow are also proving popular because they’re an incredibly striking and powerful combination. Printing black text on a strong yellow background lifts the text and really makes the USB flash drive stand out – they’re certainly hard to avoid!

Black and Yellow Flash Drives

Of course, it helps if your brand or company colours are black and yellow to start with but even if they’re not its worth thinking about whether this colour combination could work for you. If not you might want to think about using two other strong colours to use – sometimes the old adage “less is more” is a useful guide when printing flash drives.

By using fewer colours the finished USB drives will be cheaper because you typically pay a fee per colour and

potentially they’ll be stronger on the eye. The objective with promotional USB flash drives is primarily to get the recipients to build some affinity with your brand and to buy your products or services. So, starting with a flash drive that is striking and crystal clear in terms of the message you want to get out will help.

If you’re not sure what colours will work best for you then throw the challenge and your USB flash drive supplier. Most good and reputable suppliers will have in-house designers whose job is to help customers visualise the options and get the best from their budget.

Different Ways to Brand a Twister USB Memory Stick

Monday, March 7th, 2011

One of the most popular styles of USB memory stick is the Twister model. It’s small, easy to use, has no cap to lose and it comes in a huge range of different colours and memory sizes.

The metal “clip” that forms part of the body shell swivels or “twists” (hence the name Twister) to protect the USB connector when not in use – these “clips” are typically manufactured from brushed aluminium and it’s the “clips” that carry the branding or logo.

Because of the sheer volume of Twister USB Memory Sticks that are produced they tend to be one of the cheapest models available but don’t let their relative cheapness put you off – they look stunning when done well and when the right colour body shell is chosen to compliment the logo printed on them.

Various USB Sticks Memory Sticks

Whilst most of them are printed using standard printing techniques there are various ways in which the Twister can be branded including:

  • Spot colour printing – each colour is printed one at a time and allowed to dry between each colour so the final image is built up over the print process. Spot printing is the most popular option and whilst the finished print looks great spot printing is not suitable for highly complex logo’s with lots of gradients or shading or for logo’s with more than four colours
  • Full colour print process – this is the slightly moiré expensive print option but it produced photo-realistic finishes and can handle complex images.
  • Engraving – the logo or design can be “etched” into the metal clip of the Twister and this etching can be coloured to improve its visibility.
  • Epoxy dome resin stickers – the word “sticker” has a tendency to conjure up the wrong impression of what Twisters branded using this technique look like. An epoxy dome resin sticker is a high quality, full colour print that is encased in a resin so you get the benefits of a high quality printed combined with a protective case over the print. They look fantastic and have been used by lots of leading branding including BT and Microsoft just to name two.

Irrespective of which printing method you choose don’t forget you can also pantone match the body shell of the Twister USB memory stick – so, instead of just going with one of the standard factory colours you can choose your own colour. Pantone matching is a great way to make your Twister sticks stand out and grab people’s attention.

With the comprehensive range of printing options available to the Twister coupled with free or inexpensive colour matching of the shell its easy to see why its such a popular choice.

Disposable USB Flash Drive – Myth or Reality

Monday, February 21st, 2011

There’s been a lot of chatter around during the last couple of weeks on the subject of disposable, cardboard USB flash drives and whether they’re real or whether they’re just a concept drawn up by a Creative Director with an overly creative imagination – not unreasonable of course because that’s what they’re paid to do!

To be fair to any Creative Directors out there marketing and advertising campaigns using disposable USB flash drives have been with us for a little while now but most have used “web keys” rather than flash drives with any reusable flash memory on-board.

Web keys look similar to flash drives but their only function when inserted into a USB port on a PC or Mac is to fire up

Disposable USB Flash Drives

Disposable USB Flash Drives

the local default web browser and then take the user to a pre-loaded website address – nothing is stored on the web key and the user can’t store their own files on it. Its primary function is just to drive “eyeballs” to a web site or web-based promotion. Once this task is complete the web key is redundant and is typically discarded or ideally recycled!

Because they’re a little bit different “web keys” arouse curiosity and people tend to use them just to see what happens when they’re “plugged in” so they’re great when used as part of a physical direct mail campaign or as a magazine insert.

The use of real disposable USB flash drives with reusable memory on-board is far less common simply because flash drives, even flash drives with a relatively small memory (say 1GB) are still too expensive to be deemed to be disposable. Although the price of branded USB flash drives has fallen over the last couple of years they still have a high-perceived value amongst people they are given to so to suggest that it would be “OK” to use them and then just “toss them away” might not be the best message to give out. It’s hardly a message that reinforces any “eco-friendly” credentials and at best is a message that is likely to alienate some people.

If flash memory prices continue to fall as they have done then conceivably we could see disposable flash drives emerge in the market but it would need the factories to continue to produce the flash memory modules. At the moment the factories just stop manufacturing them when the price point reaches a level where they can’t squeeze enough profit from them – This is partly the reason why it’s hard to buy 64MB and 128MB flash drives.

Flash drives available for pennies that we would all be comfortable “throwing away” do not exist and if the current manufacturing trends are continued they’ll never exist. So, truly disposable USB flash drives are possible but they’ll be expensive and any company using them needs to pay particular attention to the negative messages associated with encouraging people to “throw away” perfectly good products.

Branded USB Flash Drives Deliver The News

Thursday, February 10th, 2011

If you’re sighted you take reading the newspaper or your favourite magazines for granted but if you’re blind or partially sighted then it’s much more of a challenge! Being blind or partially sighted is hard enough but to lose your sight and then lose the pleasure of reading can be particularly hard for many people to take.

talking newpaper

Carrot Talking Newspaper

Fortunately, and thanks in the main to volunteer organisations, the blind and partially sighted are able to continue to enjoy their newspapers or magazines by virtue of a “Talking Newspaper”. A Talking Newspaper, as the name implies, is an audio recording of the newspaper(s), magazine or in some cases a summary of local affairs. The recordings are often made by volunteer readers and recorded onto a cassette tape, or CD that is then posted out to the reader. Occasionally the talking newspaper is emailed out as an audio file attachment.

A more recent innovation in the world of Talking Newspapers is the use of USB flash drives. These ubiquitous little devices are ideal for the storage of audio and media files, they are small enough to “pop in the post”, they’re easy to use and they are very easy to re-write the newspapers and magazines to over and over again.

Duplicating and preparing the “talking newspapers” before distribution is fast and easy with a USB flash drive and certainly significantly quicker than copying the recording onto a tape cassette.

Cassette tapes are losing their popularity because fewer people have cassette players these days and the tapes themselves are prone to failure/damage.

Whilst there are only a small number of talking newspapers using USB flash drives at the moment the positive feedback from the newspapers and its “readers” suggest that it’s a format that is popular and as such is likely to see much greater use in the near future.

If you are a volunteer organisation that produces Talking Newspapers and you’re interested in using USB flash drives then give the team at USB2U a call and they’ll take you through the options and prices.

World Challenge Fundraising – What About Selling Branded USB Flash Drives

Friday, February 4th, 2011

If you’ve been lucky enough to bag a place on a World Challenge or school expedition then congratulations are in order because you’re going to be in for the experience of a lifetime. Whether you’re trekking in the Andean mountains in Peru or sea kayaking around the beautiful islands off Croatia you can be assured that the trip will challenge and stretch physically as well as help you to develop a whole range of personal skills and build new friendships along the way.

USB Flash Drives

USB Flash Drives

These expeditions are “self-funded” so before you can set-off on the trip you’ll be challenged to find innovative ways of raising the money to pay for it. There are loads of ideas on the web and in various forums and Facebook groups but you might also want to consider selling USB flash drives that have been printed with your school logo on and/or possibly details of the Challenge trip.

Printed USB Flash Drives are really popular at the moment because they’re easy to use; they’re small and handy to carry around. At school or university they are an absolute necessity to take work between school and home so pretty much every student needs one.

You could also consider selling them to local businesses. Lots of them are handing them out to prospective customers at shows, exhibitions and events. Typically the businesses will pre-load the USB sticks with sales brochures, presentation files or media files before they are handed out – this way they can offset the cost the flash drives by saving they make by not printing their sales collateral.

Examples of USB Wristbands

Examples of USB Wristbands

There are lots of opportunities to sell USB flash drives printed with a brand or logo including selling them to your friends, your fellow students and your teachers, lecturers and family! If your school holds sports days, award ceremonies, stages plays or has musical performances then you could record these and load the video footage and/or photographs onto the USB sticks and sell them to pupils and parents.

Ideally you need to find supplier that is sympathetic to your fundraising requirements and will offer them to you at a discount and will ideally offer you payment terms meaning you won’t have to pay upfront for them. This way you’ve got around a month to sell some before you have to pay for them. They will need to be paid for so make sure you don’t over order.

One the leading suppliers of flash drive in the UK is USB2U. They have been supplying branded (and unbranded) USB flash drives to schools and universities since 2002 and typically they’ll offer flash drives to fundraising groups on the following terms:

  • Free design support using their team of in-house designers. So, if you’ve got an idea but need someone to bring it to life then just chat through your requirement and their designers will weave their magic on their Apple Macs
  • Free Print Set-Up and Origination. When you order printed USB memory sticks it’s typical to get charged for the artwork to be “set-up” before the sticks are printed but for Enterprise Groups these fees are waived.
  • 30-Day trade terms on all orders. You won’t have to pay for your branded USB memory sticks until 30 days after delivery! (to qualify the order needs to sent to your school or university)
  • Wide choice of styles and memory sizes and you can select different colours and sizes in a single order.

If you think selling printed USB flash drives might be a good way to raise money for your expedition then get in touch with USB2U – you can email, pick up the phone (it’s a Freephone number so you won’t have to pay for the call), fill in the on-line quote form or “chat” to the team in real time using their web based chat system!

Young Enterprise Ideas – How About Branded USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

If you’re one of the expected 250,000 students this year that are participating in the Young Enterprise programmes and you’re scratching your head trying to come up with that “killer” idea then you might want to consider selling USB memory sticks that are branded (printed or customised) in some way.

Branded USB memory sticks are incredibly popular at the moment because they’re so easy to use, they’re small and portable and they come in a great range of styles and colours. At school or university they are an absolute necessity but today loads of people use them at home and at work to store and carry around their own personal files.

Businesses are also using them by the bucket load to give-away to their customers or to hand out to prospective customers at shows, exhibitions and events. Typically businesses will pre-load the USB sticks with sales brochures, presentation files or media files before they are handed out – this way they can offset the cost the USB sticks by saving they make by not printing their sales collateral.

Because of their popularity there are lots of opportunities to sell USB memory sticks printed with a brand or logo including selling them to your fellow students in your school shop. Your other sales targets include teachers, lecturers, parents and friends. If your school holds sports days, award ceremonies, stages plays or has musical performances then you could record these and load the video footage and/or photographs onto the USB sticks and sell them to pupils and parents.

Of course there is nothing stopping you selling the idea of branded USB sticks to local businesses and really going for it and taking on the current suppliers. Realistically though it makes sense to go one step at a time and target one opportunity and the most popular option so far has been to get USB sticks produced with the school logo or crest on and sell them through the school shop.

The first step is to find a supplier and ideally a sympathetic one that will offer you payment terms on your order meaning you won’t have to pay upfront for them. This way you’ve got around a month to sell some before you have to pay for them and you won’t have to deal with one of the big headaches of starting a business and that’s cash flow!

USB2U have been supplying branded (and unbranded) USB memory sticks to Young Enterprises participants for a number of years on the following terms:

  • Free design support using their team of in-house designers. So, if you’ve got an idea but need someone to bring it to life then just chat through your requirement and their designers will weave their magic on their Apple Macs
  • Free Print Set-Up and Origination. When you order printed USB memory sticks it’s typical to get charged for the artwork to be “set-up” before the sticks are printed but for Enterprise Groups these fees are waived.
  • Free Lanyards (neck straps) – these come in a variety of different colours and are available with every order.
  • Discounted packaging and gift box options
  • 30-Day trade terms on all orders. You won’t have to pay for your branded USB memory sticks until 30 days after delivery! (to qualify the order needs to sent to your school or university)
  • Wide choice of styles and memory sizes and you can select different colours and sizes in a single order.

Branded USB Battery Flash Drives

Wednesday, January 12th, 2011

If you’re looking for something a little different, something that will make your brand stand out from the crowd and something that will deliver a bit of a “wow” factor then you might want to think about USB flash drives in the shape of a battery.

Battery USB Flash Drives

Battery USB Flash Drives

Of course these battery shaped flash drives are ideal for any battery manufacturer like Duracell or Energizer but they are also ideal for any company that has products powered by batteries or is looking to “power into new markets”. There are lots of creative ways in which USB battery flash drives could be used and they certainly make a powerful impact!

The battery USB drives are slightly bigger than a standard AA battery (they need to be to accommodate the USB connector), they are made of metal and they have screw cap so they’re a pretty rugged and tough flash drive. Although they have an interesting shape they work just like any standard USB flash drive and they’re available in memory sizes from 64MB all the way up to 16GB!

Despite their shape four colour printing is available of these novel USB sticks and they can be supplied with a variety of different keyring attachments and/or lanyards.

If you do buy branded USB battery shaped memory sticks or in fact any USB stick that you’re going to use for promotional purposes then you need to think about whether you’re going to pre-load the sticks with data before you hand them out. Over the last year there has been a significant increase in the number of companies pre-loading their USB flash drives before they distribute them.

USB Batteries

The print, transportation and storage costs of printed material like sales brochures, press releases and product sheets can all be saved by loading electronic versions of them onto the flash drives. In some cases it’s relatively easy to build a business case to fund the purchase of the USB drives from these savings alone. If you build in the additional promotional value that they deliver its no surprise that more and more companies are now buying branded USB flash drives.

Serial Numbers & Bar Codes On USB Flash Drives

Monday, January 10th, 2011

When companies’ print onto USB flash drives it is typically done to promote their brand and engender some degree of customer awareness, loyalty or both. Branded USB flash drives are also increasingly given away with data pre-loaded onto the drive as a convenient and cost effective way of distributing product and pricing information or copies of presentation slides and/or press releases.

Distributing branded USB flash drives is not new but it is growing in popularity with millions of them being given away every year. Flash drives are now so popular that they have become the de facto way to save, store and carry around data files and they are in daily use in education, business and at home. This growth in popularity creates opportunities and also challenges.

The challenge if you’re giving away flash drives is to ensure that your drive doesn’t become “just another” flash drive amongst many or if it is to make sure that it stands out from the crowd and gets used. There are several ways to do this:

  • Commission custom USB’s in a shape that reflects your company’s identity or the product you are promoting. Examples include cars, fork-lift trucks, pieces of fruit, trainers, floor heaters and so on.
  • Get the USB flash drives pantone matched (this is where you define the body shell colour rather than accepting a standard factory colour). This will help your USB drive stand out from the crowd.
  • Give away a flash drive with a large amount of free storage space. This encourages the recipient to use your drive in preference to any others he/she may have.

The opportunities are many. Amongst other things flash drives are already being used to:

  • Launch new music bands (the disks are pre-loaded with the bands music, bio’s and video’s and tour dates)
  • Store and distribute wedding photo’s (as well as being used as wedding favours)
  • Celebrate the impending birth of a child (3-D and 4-D baby scans are being loaded onto flash drives and given to parents)
  • Record Race Day track event information – driver data and photographs are automatically recorded onto flash drive during “Driving Experience” and “Track Days”. These drives are then given to the participant at the end of their day out.
Flash Drive Serial Numbers and Bar Code Printing

Flash Drive Serial Numbers and Bar Code Printing

Another interesting development is the use of the branding option on flash drives to include printed bar codes and unique serial numbers. This allows companies to distribute things like software updates via USB drives whilst strictly controlling the distribution of the drives. The drives are scanned as they move around the organisation the combination of bar code and unique serial number “binds” the flash drive to a particular person, location or department.

Whilst unique serial numbers and bar codes are not the most exciting examples of printing on a USB memory stick they do illustrate how creative companies are getting in their use.
