Do you have stock of Branded Twister USBs that are dated and unusable?

Monday, February 15th, 2010

Maybe you have changed your logo, phone number, web address or just need to promote something new, but still have stocks of your old branded USB memory sticks.

One of the many advantages of using the Twister USB Memory Stick is that the branding is on the removable metal clip, as opposed to other USB Memory sticks that are branded directly onto the housing. This makes the most valuable part of it, the housing, reusable if your branding requirements change.

It is a cost effective method and easy process to change the clip from Branded USB Memory Sticks. With just a few precautions to take to ensure that the USB housing isn’t damaged or scratched. It is also important to ensure that the new clip is installed correctly to ensure a snug fit.

The following steps should be followed for a smooth transition from one clip to another:

  1. To avoid fingerprint marks on the Branded USB Memory Twister, it is advised that you wear gloves before handling the goods. To remove the old clip, put the forefinger of your left-hand into space inside the metal clip to prise it apart and open it up to get the plastic housing out. This should avoid any scratches to the housing.Recycle Your Branded USB's
  2. Before attaching the new metal clip you need to pinch it together to ensure a snug fit.Recycle Your Branded USB's
  3. In order to avoid defacing the housing, wrap a small plastic bag around it before attaching the clip. Prise open the clip just enough to squeeze it around the housing with the plastic bag sandwiched in between as a protective barrier.Recycle Your Branded USB's
  4. Lastly, carefully pull out the plastic bag to reveal the finished Branded USB Twister.Recycle Your Branded USB's

If all of these steps were carefully followed, you would never know that the clips had not been factory fitted.

Your Branded Twister USBs are now ready to use.

Promotional Memory Sticks Lead The Way In 2010

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Wow – what a start to 2010! Last year we saw significant growth in the use of branded USB memory sticks but orders in the first few weeks of 2010 have surpassed all expectations.

Sales of memory sticks that are either printed or embossed with a company logo or design are accelerating and demand for fully customised (bespoke shapes and designs) is really picking up.

Custom USB Custom USB Custom USB

A well-designed and printed memory stick does wonders to help promote your company, to develop your brand and to keep your company ahead of the competition. They’re also, as many companies are now finding out, a fantastic and cost effective way to distribute your sales literature, data sheets, pricing information and media files.

Popular uses for branded memory sticks include:

  1. Give-aways at trade shows and exhibitions (but pre-loaded with sales brochures to help reduce the paper brochure print costs, transportation and storage).
  2. Handouts at seminars and conferences (pre-loaded with the event details, speakers notes and slides and details of forthcoming events).
  3. Press events. Fully customised usb flash drives are increasingly being used in preference to standard factory models at Press Events and Press Launches because they really do generate a “buzz” and help to get key messages across to the attending journalists. Of course pre-loading the custom sticks with the press releases, core company information, biographies of key staff and media files helps to ensure the journalists have all the key information at their fingertips is recommended.
  4. Promotional give-aways. Everyone loves something for nothing but it helps if what you’re giving away is desirable and will be used by the recipient. Memory sticks certainly fit the bill here.
  5. Staff events and briefings. Memory sticks are a popular way of disseminating key information out to employees particularly if there are lots of forms and details to distribute and you want to reduce the print and reproduction costs of these forms.
  6. Visitor gifts – rather than a boring pencil, pen or T-Shirt lots of companies are now turning to branded memory sticks for visitor gifts. They are after all more “business like” and have a high-perceived value.

Given the growth in sales we’ve already seen in 2010 these examples must just be small snapshots of what printed USB flash drives are being used for. If you are interested in printed usb memory sticks or fully bespoke USB flash drives for your company then give us a call to explore the options.

Branded USB Memory – Tip 1. When Is A Chip Not A Chip?

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

This is the first in a series of top tips to consider when purchasing Branded USB Memory Sticks.

With the growing popularity of Branded USB Memory sticks, there are a number of providers springing up to support this. However, there is a hidden issue that any potential buyer needs to be aware of, that not all providers are that transparent with.

USB Memory Chipsets

In essence there are 3 components to any Branded USB Memory sticks, the flash chip (the brains), the circuit board and the body of the USB Memory stick itself.

Whilst the circuit board and body are pretty standard across the industry, there is a wide variation of USB Flash chips. In summary these can be classified as follows:

Grade A: Original ‘branded’ USB flash chips

USB Flash Memory

These flash chips are made by leading global brands such as Samsung, Hynix, Intel, Micro. They will print their name and unique series number on each chip.

These are tested to a high QA tolerance and come with a full warranty. They are the most reliable, but come at a premium price and are the most expensive USB Flash chips in the market.

Grade B: OEM flash chips

These USB flash chips are made from the main chip providers, but do not carry any branding or warranties. They are as reliable as the branded flash chips, but come at a discounted rate.

Grade C: Downgraded flash chips

There is a wastage of chips from the main manufactures, from a combination of the chip cutting process and QA failures. These are sold in bulk to third parties, who aim to recycle and sell on. There is a high failure rate on these USB Memory sticks, up to 40% in some instances. However the low price also reflects this.

Faulty USB Chipset

Grade D: Masked chips

Finally we have fake / counterfeits USB Memory chips. This is when port quality chips are programmed to mask the real size of the memory. For example, a memory stick may show that it is 1Gb, but could actually be a 128Mb chip. The only way that a user would find out the problem exists is if they try to load data that is over the actual chip capacity. The prices offered are extremely low and reflect the cost of the actual chip set used.

So in summary, ensure the supplier informs you in writing what type of chip they are providing. If it is a mission critical or high profile project, it’s worth paying for Grade A branded chip. However, Grade B would suffice for most promotional campaigns.

One final point if the price for the USB Memory sticks sound too good to be true or out of sync with other quotes then there is a high probability of them being Grade C or D chips.

Next in the series- Tip 2 – The dangers of  loading data onto USB Memory sticks.

Branded Memory Sticks – A Review of 2009

Sunday, January 3rd, 2010

With the economy still in recession and advertising and marketing budgets often the first casualties it was never going to be the easiest of years for the promotional industry. Several key sectors including the banking sector, a long standing stalwart of the promotional industry, either stopped or reduced significantly its promotional spend in 2009. Other sectors such as health and telecoms continued to spend but their overall activity was markedly down on previous years.

USB Pens

For many businesses the focus became one of survival and cost cutting. All unnecessary costs (perceived or real) were stopped, many staff lost their jobs and inevitably some businesses failed.

Against this backdrop where advertising and promotional spend was approved it had to deliver and getting value become a mantra for budget holders and buyers alike.

Branded memory sticks (also known as USB flash drives or pens) were just beginning to gain a real foothold in the promotions sector in 207/08. Costs were falling, delivery times were shortening, the quality of the product was improving year on year and the target audience “got it”. Branded memory sticks were popular. They were popular with companies looking for something innovative and useful to give that was within their budget and supported their brand and recipients of memory sticks loved them because they were (and still are) incredibly handy and useful bits of kit.

But as we entered 2009 it really did look as though it was not only going to be an “Annus Horribilis” for the promotions industry as a whole but it was also going to be the year in which the growth of branded memory sticks faltered.

Talk of the demise of the memory stick was overstated and premature because whilst its day will inevitably come in 2009 it showed steely resistance and demonstrated just why it is one of the most loved and best performing promotional products.

USB Flash Drives

In a very short space of time the branded memory sticks has risen to become a firm favorite and whilst there have been many casualties in the sector the memory stick is not one of them. Why? Well, branded memory sticks deliver and they deliver on many key metrics. They are:

  • Incredibly well received and popular as a gift or promotional item
  • Excellent at carrying a logo or brand
  • Small, portable, convenient to use
  • Ideal for pre-loading data onto such as sales collateral, press releases, product guides, presentations and audio/media files
  • Relatively inexpensive for what they deliver

They do face challenges in terms of price stability which is not helped by the strength of the $ (USD) against other local currencies in which they are purchased and their price is subject to sudden swings as major player like Apple swoop into the market and buy up millions of flash chip modules. This is unlikely to change in 2010 but as 2009 has shown the core benefits of the product make it a real winner and something that is going to be at the heart of the sales and promotions industry for a few more years!

Wooden Twister Memory Sticks

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Branded Twister USB Memory Sticks have consistently been the most popular flash drive we’ve supplied over the past few years. Their on-going popularity seems to be down to a number of key factors including the lack of any cap to lose, its clean design/style, the range of colours it comes in and the overall visual impact when branded.

Wooden Twist USB

The classic twisters with are supplied with either a smooth plastic finished or a more tactile “rubberised” finish and if you’re ordering over 100 pieces we can even pantone match the body of the memory stick to any primary colour from your logo and we’ll do this at no extra cost to you!

But, despite its dominance there might be a new contender from the same stable on the horizon. The wooden twister has many of the key attributes of its metal/plastic counterpart but the silky varnished finish coupled with its eco-friendly pedigree might see it push the classic twister for dominance.

Its early days in the battle between the classic and wooden twister memory stick but watch this space!

If you are interested in either model give us a call or if its easier just complete our on-line enquiry form and we’ll get back to you in a flash!

Kick off 2010 with a Branded USB Flash Drive

Friday, December 11th, 2009

Have you ended 2009 on a high and want to carry forward some of that momentum into 2010? Or perhaps 2009 has been a poor year and you want to try some alternative ideas and initiatives for 2010 to bolster sales?

Branded USB Packages

Either way it’s worth considering using branded USB memory sticks as part of your overall sales and marketing strategy for 2010. Branded memory sticks are incredibly popular, useful and relatively inexpensive and they can be used in some many ways including:

  1. A “leave behind” for your sales team. Print them with your logo and contact details on and pre-load them with your sales material, product sheets, links to your web sites, sales videos and pricing information.
  2. Sales exhibitions and shows – branded memory sticks pre-loaded with your sales material make excellent give-aways at sales exhibitions and shows Not only are they better received than loads of paper brochures that have to be lugged around all day but, you can deliver much more information. You can also offset the cost of preparing, printing and transporting lots of paper brochures to the event and because you can load data onto the memory stick right up to the day of the event the information (and pricing) can be more dynamic.
  3. Press events – Custom USB or bespoke memory sticks are a great idea for any press event. The capability to produce memory sticks in any eye catching 2-D or 3-D shape really opens up the opportunities to deliver something that excites the invited journalists and fires their imagination. You can of course also pre-load all the relevant information about your press event on the memory stick making life easier for the journalist to access the information they need to write what will hopefully be a great article on your company and/or its new product/service.
  4. Product launches – stimulate the demand for your new product with a “free” or promotional branded or custom memory stick. Combine with a viral e-campaign to generate lots of “on-line chatter” and activity. Integrate into vouchers and coupon offers from the many on-line coupon aggregators. Done well these types of activities can be incredibly cost effective and delivery a real spike in sales.
  5. Conferences and exhibitions – if you’re organising an event or participating in a conference or exhibition then you might want to consider getting some branded memory sticks produced to give away. Again, simple things like pre-loading any presentation material and sales material really will help sales. Today people have an expectation of easy access to information so literally putting your brand; your product and your pricing information into the palm of their hand will help.

The popularity of branded memory sticks does not look like abating so use this to the benefit of your company and deliver a memory stick that will be well received, packed with useful information and supports the development of your brand/products.

Beware of Fake Flash in Promotional USB Memory Flash Drives

Friday, December 11th, 2009

The continued popularity of USB memory sticks and flash drives for promotional and marketing activities has spawned a parallel market in the supply of cheap and often fake products.

Understandably procurement managers and buyers are constantly looking at ways to drive down their costs and it’s tempting when you’re offered memory sticks at a significant discount to order them. After all the pictures of the memory sticks you’ll be shown to support the order will look pretty much the same as other quotes you’ll no doubt have obtained from other suppliers so how do you know if what you’re being offered is genuine?

USB Memory Sticks

Firstly, lets be clear on what some of the typical scams are:

Quality memory sticks

  • Use of “re-cycled” and Grade B flash memory chips. These are flash memory chips that have been salvaged from other products or perhaps failed a full QA process. They are likely to be to correct memory size but they will have a much higher failure rate and will typically perform poorly, e.g. the read/write speeds will be slow.
  • “Masking” smaller capacity flash chips to make them look bigger. This is where the external flash disk and packaging is marked up to look like it’s a 1GB stick, the memory stick when connected to a PC will also suggest it has 1GB of storage but the actual capacity is say 256MB or 512MB. Extremely difficult to spot.
  • Using cheaper memory components rather than the specified brands. If you want a memory stick with a specified high-grade chip such as Intel or Samsung then you’ll pay a premium for these but you’ll also trust your supplier that these used. Once your memory sticks are delivered you don’t want to have to go through the hassle of breaking open a sample just to check that the internal memory is as specified.
  • Simple repackaging and re-labelling the memory sticks to make them look like they have more memory than they actually do.

The best way to avoid becoming a victim of these scams is to buy from a trusted and reputable supplier and ideally a local supplier that will take ownership of any post delivery problems or issues you might have.

Whilst it’s incredibly tempting to buy direct from some of the “factories” advertising themselves on the Internet think long and hard about it before you commit to an order. How for example will you deal with any problems once you have taken delivery of them? Typically once a “factory” has shipped they will not take the product back and your chances of recovering your money and taking action against them are slim to non-existent!

Also many of the supposed “factories” offering discounted prices are not really factories or manufacturers at all. Whilst they may have fancy web sites with lots of images of production staff diligently sitting at desks manufacturing and assembling memory sticks these are typically just “stock photos” and the factories will either be agents, middlemen or fraudsters.

The only way to be truly sure is to visit your supplier on site, check their factories and working conditions, check that they are complying with the current RoHS regulations and that they meet all the latest WEEE and REACH Compliance Regulations. Failing this just go with a local supplier that has already undertaken all of this due diligence.

The Rise And Fall Of Branded USB Memory Sticks

Friday, November 13th, 2009

Customers who are familiar with the Branded USB Memory Sticks market will be aware that prices have been unstable for the past 12 months. Many suppliers will only hold quotations for just a few days, some for as little as 24 hours. This is due to the volatility of the USB flash memory market, which has been in a state of flux, due to an imbalance of supply v demand and the falling US Dollar exchange rate.

There are many examples of customers who have received quotation for Customised USB Memory Sticks, then tried to place an order a few weeks later, only to find that the price has risen significantly! This is an unfortunate bi-product of this instability.

Branded USB Memory Sticks

Back in 2008 the price for Branded USB memory sticks were considerably less than they are now. The US Dollar exchange rate was roughly $2 to the £ and there was an oversupply of USB Flash memory. A 1Gb branded memory stick could be purchased for less than £3. Since then, the $ exchange rate has dropped dramatically, at one point down to $1.53 to the £. This immediately added a 25% increase in price. In addition, earlier this year Apple placed an order worth an estimated $500M to purchase flash memory for their iPhone. This took a large proportion of the supply out of the USB flash market. This in turn increased the price of flash by over 30%. This was particular prevalent on the 1GB and 2GB USB Flash chipsets, as these are the most popular Branded USB Memory sizes. Apple are not the only driving force as many other mobile phone and consumer electronic companies have placed large orders for flash memory in the months leading up to Christmas.

However, there are some green shoots in the market. Apple and many of the other flash hungry companies have now completed their Christmas manufacturing and as a result we have seen reductions in the flash memory prices over the past few days!

This coupled with the Dollar exchange rate increasing to $1.65, has seen a large reduction in Branded USB Flash prices.

Market analysts suggest that this is the calm before the next pricing storm, as Branded USB prices are due to increase again in 2010 – so the window of opportunity is short.

At USB2U we’ve been supplying custom memory sticks and branded memory sticks for the last 7 years at very competitive prices. Give us a call or complete the on-line enquiry form and we’ll get back to you in a flash!
