Some Unusual Uses For Branded USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, February 17th, 2011

Most companies that buy USB Memory Sticks printed or engraved with their logo on will be buying them as a basic promotional product. Typically they are simply given away at trade shows, handed out to customers and clients to build loyalty or drive new business or sometimes they’re used to support a product launch

Increasingly companies are pre-loading the USB memory sticks before they are given away with a usual “pre-load” containing PDF’s of sales brochures, presentation slides, media clips and links to web sites. Pre-loading the drives in this way saves money on print, transportation and the storage of brochures and these savings help build the case to buy the flash drives.

Some Branded USB Memory Sticks are being used in a slightly different and more innovative way and here are just a few examples:

4D Babyscans On a USB Stick

Babybond, the UK’s first ISO Quality Endorsed ultrasound provider is now offering their 4D Bonding Scan results on a USB Memory Stick.

4D Bonding Scans provides levels of early mother and child “bonding” that were simply unattainable prior to the introduction of their service.

The scans produce high quality still and moving images that are captured digitally and these “digital” files are then stored either on a DVD, CD or USB memory stick. The introduction of a USB memory stick as an option to take the Bonding Scan results away on is another innovation introduced by Babybond and reinforces their pioneering approach

Race Track Day Performance Recorded on USB Memory Sticks

USB Track Days

USB Track Days

Lots of the race circuits in the UK that offer “Track Day” experiences are now including the option to buy a USB memory stick on the day. The USB sticks dynamically record data from the engine management system and other sensors in the car to show you how well you have driven it. Photos from the day can also be pre-loaded onto the stick to give you a fantastic souvenir from your Track Day.

Talking newspapers on a USB Memory Stick

A Talking Newspaper, as the name implies, is an audio recording of the newspaper(s), magazine or in some cases a summary of local affairs. The recordings are often made by volunteer readers and have historically been recorded onto a cassette tape, or CD that is then posted out to the reader. Today, in some cases, cassette tapes and CD’s are being phased out and replaced with USB memory sticks

Theme Park Ride Photographs on a USB Stick

USB Theme Parks

USB Theme Parks

If you’ve been to a theme park then you’ll no doubt have purchased at least one photograph of yourself looking petrified on a thrill ride! The only problem with these is they are prone to damage once you’ve bought them and you can’t exactly “post” them on social networking sites that easily to show your friends just how daft you looked! So, some of the more innovative Theme Parks are now offering these “action shots” pre-loaded onto a branded USB memory stick.

So, when you think branded USB memory sticks don’t just think of “freebie” promotional items because they are now being used in all manner of interesting and innovative ways.

USB 3.0 Branded USB Memory Sticks

Friday, January 21st, 2011

USB 3.0 is here, its may not arrived with much of a fanfare and its arrival might, in the short term at least, be more interesting to classic early adopters but its arrival is significant and will have a bearing on the promotional USB memory stick market.

The reason why the arrival USB 3.0 is significant is because USB 3.0 flash drives read and write at 10 times the speed of comparable USB 2.0 memory sticks. But there is also a further and more subtle change heralded by the arrival of USB 3.0 and that is the ability of USB sticks to send and receive data at the same time

So, if you want your branded USB memory sticks to carry loads of data and be able to “play” this data quickly then

USB 3.0

USB 3.0

you’re going to love USB 3.0. Because they transfer data at 4.8 gigabytes per second they are ideal for handling large file formats like videos, music and digital photos. Running full motion, HD adverts directly from a USB 3.0 stick is going to be easy and will create all sorts of interesting creative opportunities for advertising agencies.

Although support for USB 3.0 started to appear on new PC’s in 2010 its only going to start being rolled out on most PC’s this year. If your PC is not equipped with USB 3.0 then you won’t have to dump your PC or Mac to benefit from the performance improvements but you will have to install a new PCI card to upgrade it to USB 3.0 – this is normally pretty easy to do and the cards will be relatively cheap.

If you don’t have USB 3.0 on your PC or Mac but you’re given a USB 3.0 memory stick the stick will still work but it’ll just work at USB 2.0 speeds.

In the short term the only drawback of using promotional USB 3.0 memory sticks is cost. As with all new “tech gear” its expensive when it first comes out and at the moment there is quite a premium to pay for USB 3.0 sticks. Give it another 12 months and the price differential between 2.0 and 3.0 will start to close rapidly and with 2-3 years all promotional USB flash drives will be USB 3.0.

The challenge in the intervening period is to get your creative hats on and think about how you can best use the improvements in speed and interaction offered by these new USB memory sticks.

USB Writing Pen Branded With Your Company Logo

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

Pens have been used as promotional items for years and have long established themselves as an excellent gift and or giveaway across all demographics. Part of the reason for their on-going popularity is that you can buy branded pens from a few pennies or you can spend significantly more on top-end fountain pens that are supplied in a beautiful presentation box.

USB Writing Pens

USB Writing Pens

Although we’re becoming more and more technology obsessed as evidenced by the rapid growth in the use of email, texts, tweeting and social networking there is still a place for the humble pen. Even the most ardent and hard core lovers of technology will still typically carry around with them a pen of some description because even in 2010 its difficult to get by without using a writing pen in some situations. Think about writing birthday cards, signing off your expenses, signing contracts, leaving notes on the desks of colleagues, writing cheques and sending in official application forms to name just a few examples of why we still need a writing pen.

If you are looking to use writing pens as a giveaway, gift or “thank you” at an event, show, seminar or conference then one option is a USB writing pen. These innovative and exciting products combine all of the well know and established benefits of a traditional writing pen with the benefits of a USB flash drive!

USB Pens

USB Pens

Embedded in the body of the pen (accessed by unscrewing the body of the pen) is a USB connector, a USB flash memory module and a flash memory controller chip. The USB flash memory element of the pen works just like any standalone USB stick, it can come in memory sizes from 64MB all the way up to a whopping 16GB and it allows the user to store and transfer their personal data with them – all secreted in the body of a writing pen!

USB writing pens are physically no larger than many conventional pens, they can be branded with a company logo just like a conventional pen and as you would expect they write just like conventional pens.

From a pricing perspective USB pens are only marginally more expensive than a standard branded USB memory stick but the dual functionality more than makes up for this small price premium. When comparing the price of USB pens to “standard pens” its more difficult because the price range of pens is so wide – they are of course quite a bit more expensive than standard biro’s but equally they are significantly cheaper than some of the more expensive biro’s, rollerballs and fountain pens that are available.

Most suppliers of branded USB memory sticks will also supply branded USB pens so next time you’re after a quote ask them to include USB pens. You might be surprised at just how inexpensive they are today and your customer, clients and/or staff will love them!

Boxes, Pretty Boxes.

Friday, October 1st, 2010

There’s more than one way to make an impact with a USB flash drive printed with your logo on and one of the more popular options is to give them away in a printed presentation box. There are lots of different presentation box options including cardboard boxes, plastic boxes with a magnetic clasp and tin boxes (with and without a “window”).

USB Boxes

USB Boxes

Branded USB flash drives make fantastic promotional products and in lots of scenarios it would be inappropriate to put them in any additional packaging (whether this packaging is printed or not) but, if you really want to make the most of the money you are spending on the flash drives it is worth considering how you’re going to package and present them.

If your flash drives are going into a media pack or just handed out at a trade show or sales event then a presentation box is likely to be overkill. However, if the branded USB flash drives are more of a “thank you” to delegates or speakers at conference or seminar or a “reward” for loyalty or achieving some other goal then they are better given away in a box, particularly if the box can also be printed with your brand and an appropriate message. Bear in mind that the large, flat surface offered by the box gives you lots of scope to print larger and more complex images than you can typically print on the flash drive itself.

USB Flash Drive Boxes

USB Flash Drive Boxes

Gifts such as flash drives that are appropriately boxed and where some though has gone into the presentation of them look so much better than similar gifts that are just handed out in plastic bags or without any packaging. There is of course a balance to be drawn between the added costs of these boxes and the additional impact and benefit that will be derived from using them.

Whilst boxes and tins do add to the overall cost of supply of printed USB flash drives, printed cardboard boxes are relatively inexpensive, they’re light so add little to the weight and transport costs. At the other end of the scale are tin boxes with foam inserts. These tin boxes look fantastic but they are bulky and heavy so expect to pay more for them and remember to factor in the additional storage and transportation costs if you are taking them to an event.

If you are interested in getting some gift boxes for your branded USB flash drives its worth keeping an eye out for any special offers from USB drive suppliers. In a highly competitive market its common for suppliers to occasionally offer “free” printed gift boxes with orders of a certain quantity.

Branded USB Flash Drives – To Box or Not to Box That is the Question

Wednesday, September 8th, 2010

If you’re ordering USB flash drives printed with a logo on for a forthcoming event, show, press conference or exhibition then one of the questions you’ll need to ask yourself is do you need to supply the USB flash drives in a gift box or would you be better off handing them out without any packaging?

USB Gift Boxes

USB Gift Boxes

There are two clear schools of thought on this with the “pro box” camp arguing that if you’re going to give someone a “gift” then you should package and present it just as you would any other gift. Consider if you’d be just as happy if your partner gave you a gift on your birthday but failed to put any thought into the way the gift was presented and given to you. It would look like he or she simply couldn’t be bothered or didn’t have the time to wrap up the gift and present it properly.

Part of the enjoyment of being given a gift is seeing how much thought has gone into it, how its been personalised for you and unwrapping or opening the gift to reveal the surprise. If the same gift were simply handed over in a plastic bag it wouldn’t have the same impact and would “lose” something in the giving. For the “pro-box” camp the argument is clear cut and they’ll always supply any branded USB flash drives they give out in presentation boxes and in some cases they might even go the extra mile and get the presentation cases printed as well!

USB Presentation Tin

USB Presentation Tin

The “anti-box” camp will conversely argue that there is already too much packaging in the world today and this packaging is just adding to the world’s growing waste problem. So for them irrespective of the benefits of supplying their USB flash drives in a simple cardboard gift box it’s simply a non-starter and metal tins or wooden boxes (even those from sustainable sources) are just a complete “no, no”.

So the arguments are clear and come down to a trade off between how environmentally friendly and eco-conscious you want to be versus a weaker impact when the USB flash drives are handed out.

The images here illustrate just how good branded USB flash drives can look when presented in a gift box. Whether to order a gift box with your drives is a judgement call you’ll have to make!

Back To School With Branded USB Memory Sticks

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

With the nights drawing in, schools have reopened for the start of a new academic year. With this, comes a growing trend for schools to offer branded USB memory sticks to pupils and staff alike.

So why should schools consider Branded USB Memory sticks and how can they get best ‘bang for buck’ when procuring them?

The more progressive schools understand that USB Memory sticks are an ideal vehicle to allow pupils and staff to store and transport information at school and between home and school, make changes / mark and upload to the school network.

However, there are some additional benefits that may be more subtle, but equally as important.

  • Reducing the cost of printing and transporting paper, so its environmentally friendly.
  • Pupils can back up coursework that they complete at home or at school as a safety net.
  • The USB Memory sticks can be branded with the school logo to add greater affinity with the school.
  • Passwords can be added to the Customised Memory sticks so if the data is sensitive it can be made secure.
  • Data can be loaded and protected on the Branded USB Memory sticks. So the school could consider providing all the standard school docs, e.g. school term dates, policies, link to web sites etc.
  • A unique serial number can be printed to the side of the Branded USB Memory stick to allow any lost memory sticks to be easily reunited with their owner.
  • A strip can also be added to the Branded USB Memory stick so users can add their names.

With the current scrutiny of school budgets and horror stories in the media of poor procurement from schools / LEAs, what should you consider when purchasing Branded USB memory sticks.

  • Try to obtain three quotes from established UK suppliers
  • Ensure that you are offered a line of credit, you should not ne required to make any upfront payments.
  • A free sample of the proposed USB Memory stick should be requested.
  • Ensure that the chips in the Branded Memory sticks are new and not recycled or reconditioned.
  • Consider contacting other local schools and purchasing a larger order with different logos, as economies of scale would definitely drive the price down.
  • Explore getting a local company to sponsor the production of the memory sticks and in return you can add their logo / contact details to the back.
  • Parents may be willing to make a contribution to the Custom Memory Stick so they can become cost neutral.

The benefits of Branded USB Memory sticks combined with pupils appetite for new technology has lead to many leading schools embracing USB Memory Sticks as an essential tool for learning.

Baby Scans On a Branded USB Memory Stick

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

What an absolutely fantastic idea. Babybond, the UK’s first ISO Quality Endorsed ultrasound provider is now offering their 4D Bonding Scan results on a USB Memory Stick.

Established in 1998 Babybond are now regarded as the most experienced provider of baby scans in the UK and with the introduction of their 4D Bonding Scans they remain at the forefront of innovation in their field. Their 4D Bonding Scans provides levels of early mother and child “bonding” that were simply unattainable prior to the introduction of their service.

The scans produce high quality still and moving images that are captured digitally and these “digital” files are then stored either on a DVD, CD or USB memory stick. USB memory sticks have, of course, been with us for some time and are now incredibly popular in walks of life. Their popularity stems from their portability, their ease of use and the fact that they can be used on pretty much any personal computer or Mac without the need for any power, any special software or any concerns – they are simply just incredibly easy to use.

This latest innovation in the use of USB memory sticks just adds to the growing catalogue of ways in which this technology is being adopted. Some other interesting uses include:

  • Professional Photographers now supplying Wedding Photograph portfolios to their clients on USB memory sticks
  • Track day information (from experience days driving high performance race cars) is now being recorded directly onto a USB memory stick from the cars engine management systems and given to the driver at the end of the Track Day experience.
  • New bands are increasingly trying to grab attention by releasing material on branded USB memory sticks
  • Repair and service engineers are increasingly carrying software updates on USB memory sticks rather than CD’s, which are deemed bulkier and more cumbersome.

If you’ve got an idea that you need bringing to life on a USB memory stick then give the team at USB2U a call.

Branded USB Memory Sticks The Preferred Choice Of Photographers

Friday, August 20th, 2010

One of the biggest changes to the photography industry over the last few years has been the move away from film to digital photography. A market that was up until a few years ago almost exclusively film based is now almost exclusively digital based.

Most professional photographers and “snappers” alike will today use digital cameras or mobile phones to take their images and once taken the images are easy to store, enhance, share and it’s easy to produce print from them. For many the real joy of and benefit of digital photography is the ability to share their photo’s with family and friends by uploading them onto sites like Flickr and Facebook.

The immediacy of digital photography and the ability to take literally thousands of images for barely any incremental cost has turned us all into a nation of “snappers” and “posters” but when it comes to photo’s of that “special event”, family portrait or portfolio photo’s then we still, in the main, turn to Professional Photographers. The ability to take “fun” and personal “snapshots” is within the grasp of all of us but photography, good photography is still an art and a profession that by definition is best left to the professionals.

USB Photographers

USB Flash Drive - Photographers

Growing number of Professional photographers now not only supply their clients with hard copy prints of their photographs but they also supply them with a whole collection or portfolio of shots on some form of digital medium. For the last couple of years the digital medium of choice has been a CD or DVD because these carry large amounts of data (photo’s) and they do so relatively cheaply. The downside of CD’s and DVD’s is that they are not really considered a great “keepsake” and they do little to promote the Photographer’s business or create any form of recall –in short they do the job but they are just not great adverts for the Photographer’s business.

With the continued fall in the price of USB memory sticks allied to their proven use as a promotional product more and more Professional Photographers are now starting to use them to hand out to their client. The client’s photographs are pre-loaded on the USB memory stick and the USB memory stick is branded (printed) to carry the logo, contact details and typically the web address of the photographer.

Branded USB memory sticks unlike CD’s or DVD’s have great perceived value, they enhance the service offering from the photographer and they more importantly work as an on-going sales “billboard” which in turn should generate more business for the photographer.

Just as we’ve seen a significant shift in way in which we all take photographs its likely that we’re on the cusp of a change in the way in which professional photographers supply their images to their clients

Not Sure Whether To Buy A USB Pen or USB Flash Drive – Simple Buy Both!

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Many of our customers have very clear ideas about what they want from a branded USB memory stick and its not unusual for them to have very precise ideas on what model, colour and memory size will work best for them and their brand. Sometimes this is simply because they have purchased branded memory sticks before and simply want a repeat order or because they’ve seen other companies USB memory sticks and want something similar for themselves.

But, if you’re looking to order USB memory sticks with your logo printed or engraved on for the first time it can be daunting. Not only are there literally hundreds of different models and styles available including credit card versions, USB pens, leather memory sticks, USB keys and the usual range of “more standard” designs but every model comes in a range of different colours and in some cases a range of different finishes, i.e. glossy, rubberised, and metal.

Once you’ve settled on a short list its then a case of working out exactly what you want printed on the memory sticks, whether you should print on both sides, whether you should have the same design printed on both sides or perhaps have your logo on one side and your web URL and phone number on the other side. Decisions, decisions!

Of course for customers that are not quite sure what they want it helps that our in-house design team are on-hand to work up concepts and ideas. At USB2U we’ve always offered this service without charge and without any obligation because we want to make sure that you get not just an “ok” memory stick but a branded USB memory stick that looks fantastic and will do a great job at promoting your company. It’s a cliché but we want our customers to be “delighted” with the choice they’ve made and if that means going the extra mile to help them make the right decision then we’re happy to do it.

Branded Memory Sticks and Pens

Branded Memory Sticks and Pens

For some customers narrowing down the choice to one particularly USB memory stick is not always easy. One option is to go with multiple types or the same model but in a variety of colours. A great example of this is BASI (British Association of Snowsport Instructors) who eventually chose a Classic USB flash drive and a USB Pen with the pen being supplied in a really nice metal tin. Both of them look great and its easy to see why making a decision between the two would be tough. BASI were delighted with the results and were kind enough to say the following:

“Just a line to let you know that I have received the USB’s today and that I am delighted with the products. Thank you for your assistance with the order, and it has been a pleasure to deal with you.”

If you’re considering buying branded USB memory sticks and you’re not sure which model to choose then just give us a call. Our friendly sales team will talk you through the options and arrange a free no obligation mock-up(s) for you.
