On the Grid We Have Maserati, Mercedes, Porsche Branded Memory Sticks

Tuesday, May 18th, 2010

Gentlemen start your engines. Not only are some of the worlds most advanced motor manufactures constantly challenging the boundaries of what makes a great motor car but they are now looking at how they use the latest USB memory stick products within their marketing plans, their trade shows and during their driving day experiences.

Promotional Flash Drives

For an industry that is renowned for its technological innovation, its cutting edge design and impressive marketing it’s perhaps no surprise that the leading manufactures have embraced the humble USB Memory Stick. After all, there are significantly more things you can do with a memory stick than you can do with a CD or DVD and they’re far more popular with customers, dealers, showroom staff and the motoring press.

Branded Memory Sticks

Branded flash drives are popular because done well can look absolutely stunning, they are an excellent and relatively cheap way to distribute large amounts of sales and technical data, advertising movie clips, road tests reports and links to web sites. They’re also excellent for use at trade shows to draw prospective customers to your stand (albeit the cars normally do a pretty good job of this anyway) and they are a great idea to hand out to journalists and members of the motoring press at Press Events.

Some of the more innovative uses include capturing driver data (and car performance data) during race days and driving days. At the end of the race/driving experience the data can be uploaded from the memory stick onto a PC for review and analysis. This is something that was simply not possible with CD/DVD technology but now, providing memory sticks with the right performance specification are used, it’s easily achieved.

Branded USB

At the moment the motoring industry is only scratching at the surface of what’s doable with a USB memory stick and understanding where they can add value but given their constant competition between the brands both on and off the track its going to be an interesting space to keep an eye on!

Volcanic Ash & Euro Worries Hit Branded Memory Stick Market

Monday, May 17th, 2010

The market for branded USB memory sticks is under severe pressure at the moment from two unanticipated sources; the continued disruptions to flights caused by the volcanic ash drifting over the UK and the financial markets worries over the state of the European economy.

Just a few months ago the sky was clear and blue and free of ash and no one gave any consideration to a few strangely named volcanoes in Iceland. With a few exceptions the flights operated by couriers like UPS, TNT and DHL were all flying in and out of the UK with boring regularity and shipments of branded memory sticks from our factories were arriving on time every day. Today there is a nervous air of uncertainty about things.

At the height of the volcanic disruption some orders were being delayed for up to a week and when you’ve got hard and tight deadlines to work to this is a nightmare. Fortunately where there were real issue for our clients we were able to work with them and provide solutions from our UK stock but not every supplier is in this fortunate position.

Today a couple of weeks on from the height of the problems we are again faced with the spectre of further airport closures and restrictions in UK airspace. Not a helpful situation in an industry that really does work on a “just in time” basis.

Branded Memory Sticks

Branded Memory Sticks

As if further delays to shipments were not enough the Pound (£) has slumped against the Dollar ($) on continuing worries over the state of Europe’s finances and a widening trade gap deficit! Today the £ is struggling to make it above $1.44. Last week we expected it to break back through $1.5 and in our wildest dreams we’d even hoped it would start to climb back towards the heady days of $1.8 we were spoilt with not so long ago.

So we now have the double whammy effect of climbing prices and uncertainty over delivery times. Who’d be a supplier of branded memory sticks in this market? Well at USB2U we like a challenge and despite all the apparent adversity we’re still confident we can offer not only some of the best prices in the market but we can also give you as much reassurance as we can about delivery. Of course we can’t compete against the forces of Mother Nature but we do monitor the situation daily and we do use a range of couriers to give us the best chance of ensuring any “open routes” are used. Failing that we always carry UK stock as a contingency.

We’ve Got Your Number – Branded Memory Sticks

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The use of USB memory sticks, or Flash Drives as they are sometimes called, for promotional purposes has grown dramatically over the past few years and it’s a trend that looks set to continue.

The popularity of branded memory sticks is to a large degree underpinned by their inherent value, their ease of use, the fact that you can pre-load them with data and because they look fantastic printed up with a logo or brand. There are lots of different styles and models to choose from and they come in a wide range of standard colours but they can also be pantone matched to a specific colour if needed.

Falling prices over the past couple of years has also helped their popularity and historic practice of loading cheap unit prices with “extra” charges for origination, print set up, data loading, colour matching and lanyards are now, in the main, a thing of the past. So with lower prices, greater transparency on pricing, faster lead times and a larger range of products to choose from the position of the branded memory stick in the promotional gifts sector looks assured.

The vast majority of branded memory sticks are used as promotional “giveaways” where it’s not necessary or important to “bind” the memory stick to the person that it’s being given to. But, in some circumstances its not only useful but necessary to know which particular memory stick is given to which person and in these circumstances you need to have some unique marker on the stick so that it can be tracked back to the recipient.

The reasons for doing this vary from:

  • Memory sticks distributed to students by Universities are often supplied with a unique serial number on each memory stick so that the university can record which student has which stick. This is useful in the event of sticks being lost or “going missing” because when found or recovered they can be traced back to the original owner.
  • Memory sticks distributed with sensitive information are often uniquely numbered so that in the event of loss (and subsequent recovery) it’s clear who was responsible for the loss.
  • Creating different batches of memory sticks with different data sets loaded onto them. Printed flash drives all look the same (unless you’ve ordered batches of different colours or printed a slightly different brand or logo on them) so it’s handy to have a discrete serial number printed or etched onto them to help create and manage batches. Useful for data-loading, distribution and audit purposes.

Branded memory sticks can be serial numbered in a variety of ways including printing, etching and engraving. The format of the numbering, or lettering is fully customisable and it can be as discrete or as obvious as you wish. Just speak to the sales team when placing your order and they will talk you through the options

Relieve The Boredom Of Data Loading USB Flash Drive

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Yes, you can relieve the boredom normally associated with pre-loading branded flash drives with data by letting us do it for you. It’s as simple as that. We know just what a pain it can be to get lumbered with the task of loading up your memory sticks, which is why we offer a complete outsourced solution.

Whether you buy your branded memory sticks from us or not we can load up your memory sticks for you. Of course we’d love to be able to supply the memory sticks as well (in which case we can typically offer the data loading free of charge) but if you’ve been tempted to order them from another supplier and now need some help with the data loading then just give us a call and we’ll talk you through the options.

USB Data Loading

USB Data Loading

At USB2U we have invested in some of the latest professional data loading kit available which not only allows us to load your memory sticks but also to re-format and test every memory stick as well if that’s what you need. Our prices are incredibly competitive and start from just a few pence per stick. We’ll include a full QA report with every batch we data load and we’ll turn your job round in just a day or two. If you are up against a really tight deadline then just call us and we’ll see if we can slot you into our schedules.

For the relatively small additional cost to load your sales material (documents, PowerPoint slides, media files, web links etc.) onto a memory stick it’s a “no-brainer” to make sure you do it before you distribute the sticks. Whilst branded memory sticks do a great job of building affinity to your brand and your company it makes good business sense to take advantage of the storage on the sticks and to load up your own data.

If you’re still looking for a supplier of promotional flash drives of custom USB sticks as well as looking for someone that can load your data for you then you’ve definitely come to the right place. At USB2U we’ve been supplying printed flash drives since 2002 and we are now recognised as one of the leading suppliers in the UK. To see just how competitive we are either fill in our on-line enquiry form or phone us on our Freephone number and speak to one of the team.

UK Election Results Hits Price of Branded Memory Sticks

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Although there are a few seats still left to be declared it’s already obvious that no party in the UK general election will gain a sufficient majority to prevent a hung Parliament. Political commentators have been predicting this in the run up to what has turned out to be one of the most closely fought elections in recent times so whilst it has not come as a great surprise the financial markets are reacting badly to the result.

Shares on the UK Stock Exchange have crashed in early morning trading and the pound has fallen dramatically against the dollar. The markets have already seen significant falls over the last few days on the back of worries about the Greek economy and the European bail out plans. The results of the UK election coupled with concerns about the UK’s high borrowing levels mean the markets are going to be very turbulent places for the foreseeable future.

Branded Memory Sticks

Branded Memory Sticks

For any company looking to buy branded memory sticks or custom USB flash drives in the short term this is bad news. The vast majority of memory sticks in the world are manufactured in China and purchased in US dollars. The pound has now fallen 5% against the dollar in the last 2 days and the stark reality of this is that prices of branded memory sticks will have to rise by 5% to compensate.

It was thought that the currency markets had already factored in a potential hung Parliament in the UK into the exchange rates but the results coupled with the wider, global economic concerns have seen further falls.

If you are seeking quotes for branded memory sticks over the next couple of days be prepared for any prices you are given to be valid for very short periods of time, e.g. 1-2 days. It’s unlikely that any supplier, given the current uncertainty in the market, is going to be able to guarantee prices longer than this so check the terms of any quote carefully.

It’s too soon to say when and if the markets will settle down and some stability returns to the currency exchange markets and in turn the UK price for branded memory sticks. At USB2U we will do all we can to ensure our customers continue to get the best possible price for their branded memory sticks.

Twister Branded Memory Sticks – Lets Twist Again

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

With a nod in the direction of Chubby Checker its nearly summer so it its time to twist again like we did last year. Seriously though if you are looking for a good looking, compact, hardwearing and reliable branded memory stick that looks excellent when printed then look no further than the “Twister” model.

Throughout the last few years the Twister Memory Stick has consistently out-sold every other USB memory stick in our portfolio and based on sales already this year it looks as though its going to top the sales chart again in 2010.

Twister Memory Sticks

Twister Memory Sticks

So just what is it that makes this fairly humble looking flash drive the darling of the promotional and marketing USB world. Well here’s our list of reasons why the Twister Flash Drives is everyone’s favourite:

  • No cap to lose – the Twister gets its name because part of the body twists around to reveal the USB connector and makes any cap redundant.
  • Great choice of standard colours
  • Free Pantone Matching (we can match the body shell to any colour you want)
  • Integral lanyard loop makes it easy to attach lanyards and key-rings
  • Relatively small form factor – its nice and compact without being too small.
  • Can be engraved, printed or supplied with dome stickers with a full colour photo realistic print
  • They look great – there’s no denying the Twisters done well in the right colour to contrast with the logo that’s being printed on it look fantastic!
  • They’re a safe bet – because they are so popular most people have seen them around already and they know what they’re getting and there is little risk associated with them as a choice.

There are lots of variants of the standard Twister memory stick including wooden versions (ideal for companies with an “eco friendly” bias), slightly larger and longer ones that can take a bigger print (handy if you’ve got a long URL you want to print) and smaller ones if you’re short on space or want to reduce your transportation costs.

Wooden Twister Memory Sticks

So lots of different “flavours” of Twisters have been developed to maintain the interest in the model but the best seller continues to be the standard version.

If you’re interested in a quote for these just give us a call or fill out the on-line enquiry form. We’ve always got lots in stock in the UK if you’re in a hurry (albeit colours and sizes might be limited) and we can certainly get some samples to you if you need to see them in the flesh.

Promotional Flash Drives – Dome Stickers

Friday, April 30th, 2010

Mention the word “sticker” in the context of promotional flash drives and you don’t always get a positive reaction. For some reason peoples perception of stickers is that they will look cheap and nasty and that they’re just a poor relation to memory sticks where the body of the memory stick itself is printed.

When we talk about “stickers” we don’t mean the sort of tacky sticker that someone has knocked up on a local printer and just plonked onto a blank flash drive. Improvements in sticker technology now allow us to use dome stickers on flash drives and memory sticks. A dome sticker is a combination of a high colour print protected under and raised resin dome. The stickers can be produced in any shape and can accommodate even the most complex of prints, including graduated tones that typically can’t be printed directly onto a memory stick.

Branded USB - Dome Stickers

Branded USB - Dome Sticker

So not only are dome stickers more flexible in terms of the complexity of print they can support but the resin layer applied to the sticker encases and protects the printed logo and helps prevent wear and tear. Printed memory sticks can occasionally be subject to problems of scratching and gradual erosion of the printed logo, particularly if the sticks are attached to a set of keys on a key ring. If you are looking for branded memory sticks that are likely to be subjected to this sort of punishment and you want your brand to remain intact then the use of domed stickers might be the solution.

Another benefit of domed stickers is that they can be printed in just a matter of days and then applied to blank (unprinted) stock. If you’re printing complex logos or logos with 3 or 4 colours and you need them in a hurry then domed stickers can also work out cheaper than getting memory sticks printed in the UK.

Dome Stickers

Of course the acid test is how the stickers look on the memory sticks and whether the finished product is going to do justice to your brand. From the memory sticks we’ve supplied where we’ve used domed stickers we can reassure you that they look fantastic. We’re not suggesting you should always use domed stickers because for some flash drives printing is and will always remain the best option. But, if you’re in a hurry and you don’t mind limiting your choice of flash drives to those that work well with domed stickers then they are an excellent solution.

Branded Memory Sticks – Pick A Colour

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

When you’re selecting a branded memory stick to print your company logo on its easy to think that your only options are the standard colours the sticks come in. Typically these will be the usual red, blue, black, white and silver with the occasional green and yellow thrown in for good measure depending on the model you’re interested in.

Pantone Matched Memory Sticks

Pantone Matched Memory Sticks

But don’t be fooled because memory sticks can be produced in pretty much any colour you want. So, if you’ve got a particular colour in mind that might work really well with your logo or brand then it can be done you just need to allow a couple more days for them to be manufactured.

Producing branded memory sticks in a colour that contrasts well with your logo or picking one of the primary colours from your logo and using this pantone colour to produce the memory stick in can look great. There are lots of flash drives produced in the standard colours so if you are looking to stand out from the crowd a flash drive manufactured in your own colour will really help.

At USB2U we offer free pantone matching of the memory sticks body shell absolutely free of charge on our most popular models. The only caveat is that we ask you to order at least 100 pieces to qualify for the free offer. Where we do charge for pantone matching it still won’t break the bank and typically adds just a few pennies to the cost per memory stick.

If a fully customised USB memory stick in a 2-D or 3-D shape is a stretch to far for you then a pantone matched version is a fantastic compromise. Don’t forget that if you want to raise the bar a little higher you can also order printed gift boxes and/or lanyards to go with them.

USB memory sticks are currently one of the most popular promotional items in the market today so if you’re ordering them don’t settle for second best. Make sure you take the time to work with our designer to get the best colour for your brand. We’ll work up some examples and mock-ups free of charge and then we’ll produce the pantone matched sticks for you for no extra charge.

Branded Memory Sticks Also Known As….

Tuesday, April 27th, 2010

We thought it might be fun to come up with a list of names given to what we typically call a branded memory stick. After all there can’t be many products that have gained such global popularity whilst leaving a trail of confusion in its wake about what its actually called.

The situation is not helped because Sony calls their memory cards “Memory Sticks” but this naming convention has been picked up by many as a short hand for what others call a USB flash drive. Confused? Well, it’s no surprise. You want to try working in an industry that seems to have an identity crisis!

Hopefully what you call a memory stick will appear on this list, if not let us know and we’ll add it. Here goes.

Common names or expressions given to what we commonly call Memory Sticks:

  • USB sticks
