Now That’s What I Call A Fast Promotional USB Flash Drive

Friday, January 20th, 2012

OK, to be clear we’re not talking in the context of how quickly the promotional USB flash drives reads and writes data but more about how fast the raw, blank USB flash drive was turned into a stunning promotional product.

At 4pm yesterday we took an order from a customer who needed USB sticks in a hurry. They had their artwork ready and their credit card in hand ready to pay for them providing (and here’s the rub) they could be with them today!

Now at USB2U that’s the sort of challenge we like. So here’s what happened:

  • Order confirmed by customer at around 4pm
  • Artwork emailed over to their Account Manager
  • USB2U designer sets artwork, creates digital proof that is then emailed back to the customer for approval.
  • Customer give their approval
  • In anticipation of this the USB sticks are prepared ready for printing
  • Fifty USB sticks are printed as per the approved artwork, QA checked and signed off ready for despatch.
  • Overnight courier collects the printed USB flash drives at 5:15
  • The following day the promotional USB flash drives are delivered to a delighted customer who then dashed off to their event with them.

Now we’re not suggesting we can do this for every customer who calls us at 4pm in a panic but where we can help we’ll certainly go the extra mile.

Printed USB Memory Sticks

Printed USB Memory Sticks

Our normal rush service is 48hrs from order, we can often do 24hrs (if everything is ready in terms of artwork etc.) and very occasionally if the planets are in the right alignment and the team here are up for a collective challenge we can work minor miracles.

So, if you are looking for a supplier of promotional USB flash drives and a supplier that holds stock locally and can print the stock and get it to you quickly then give us a call. We like exceeding expectation whenever we can!

Loading Data onto Promotional USB Sticks Is Boring So Don’t Do It

Friday, January 13th, 2012

If you’re thinking about buying some promotional USB sticks for your business, perhaps for a forthcoming show, exhibition or event but you’re dreading the prospect of having to load each and every one of them with data files then don’t do it.

Of course you should load them with data (sales brochures, web links, brochures, etc.) but don’t put yourself through the torture of doing it yourself. Get your supplier of the USB sticks to load the data for you before they are delivered. Most suppliers (providing it’s a reasonable amount of data) will pre-load the sticks for you free of charge. OK, you need to be organised and have your data ready and you might have to provide the supplier with the data early but if you can do this it’s so much easier than trying to load them yourself from you PC in the office!!

Pre-loading data onto hundreds or thousands of memory sticks can take hours and in some cases days, depending on the size of the data you are copying. So don’t do it it’s not good for your health or your sanity.

USB Data Loading

USB Data Loading

Companies that offer a data-loading service will usually use commercial and automatic USB data duplication equipment that allows them to load thousands of memory sticks pretty quickly. These professional data-loading systems are rack mounted, they manage tens or hundreds of USB sticks at a time and the systems can be expanded to meet demand.

At USB2U we invested in a number of professional data-loading machines a few years ago and we regularly load data on behalf of our customers. All we need is the data and then we create a “master” USB memory stick which we get approved by the customer and then we replicate the data onto the memory sticks the customer has ordered. Simple, painless and hassle free!

Not only that but, the beauty of the professional data duplication equipment that we use at USB2U is that during the data loading process we test and QA each USB stick again before they are sent to our customers. We can also provide detailed reports on the overall amount of data loaded; the data transfer speeds of the sticks and any failures.

The level of investment in this professional equipment is significant but it allows us to offer a complete solution that includes the supply of branded USB flash drives and accessories, data loading and if needed fulfilment. We can also do all of this quickly often responding to request to print, dataload and ship USB sticks in as little as 24hrs

Understand the Basics of Buying Promotional USB Flash Drives

Monday, January 9th, 2012

Before you place an order for promotional USB flash drives printed with your company, school or university name on there are a few basic things you ideally need to be aware of.

Unfortunately just like lots of other sectors that supply businesses and schools with products there are “scam merchants” about that are only too willing to take your business and turn a profit at whatever cost even if that means supplying you with fake or poor quality goods. Given your name will be printed on the USB flash drives you need to be sure you don’t fall prey to their scams or it will reflect badly on your brand and organisation.

Some of the basic things to watch for when buying promotional USB Flash drives are:

1)      Is your supplier using or planning to use “re-cycled” or Grade B flash memory chips inside the USB flash drives they supply you with. As the name implies a re-cycled flash memory module will have been salvaged from a Grade A product that has perhaps failed a full QA process. They are likely to be to correct memory size but they will have a much higher failure rate and will typically perform poorly, e.g. the read/write speeds will be slow.

2)      Check the drives have not been “masked”. Masking is a growing problem and it’s particularly difficult to spot. It involves making smaller capacity flash drives appear to look as though they have more storage capacity than they actually do. Externally the USB sticks won’t look any different, even when you plug them into a PC everything will look “OK”. If you’ve ordered say 1GB USB sticks they will appear as 1GB sticks on the PC (even when you check the properties of the drive) But, if you load data on the drive up to the supposed limit and then take out the drive and plug it into another PC you’ll find the data isn’t there!!

What’s happened is that the manufacturer/supplier has taken say a 256MB flash drive and “masked” it to make it look like a 1GB – they’ll sell it to you as though it’s a genuine 1GB. This is the reason why some supplier prices look so cheap – it’s because you’re not getting what you ordered. Worse they’ll sell it at a 1GB price and pocket the extra profit.

3)      Cheap controller chips and cheap flash memory modules – at the heart of any memory stick are two core components: the flash memory module and the controller chip that manages the read/write process to the flash memory. Both of these components are available from a number of different sources (Intel, Samsung, Hynix etc.) and some perform better than others – the price of them is a reasonable indicator of the performance.

So, if you get offered “cheap” USB sticks then be prepared for these two components to be at the lower end of what’s available. This in turn will impact the speed and performance of the USB sticks. This is not always an issue but if you are planning to load lots of data on the USB sticks or you’re a photographer that will be hoping to load lots of high resolutions images on the sticks then make sure you go for high spec memory chips and controllers.

4)      It’s not unknown for some suppliers to just put a 1GB sticker on a 256MB flash drive and hope they’ll get away without you noticing.

If you don’t want to fall victim to these scams then buy from a trusted and reputable supplier and ideally a local supplier that will take ownership of problems or issues you might have once they have been delivered.

Expected Promotional USB Flash Drive Trends In 2012

Wednesday, December 21st, 2011

Well 2011 has certainly been a busy year in the promotional USB flash drive market. The popularity of the flash drive as a promotional give-away was reinforced not only by the sheer number of companies that have bought them but by a solid piece of market research undertake by the BPMA (British Promotional Merchandising Association).

Of all the people surveyed by the BPMA nearly half (45%) said they would most like to receive a USB stick in preference to any other promotional product. Usefulness was cited as the primary reason for wanting a USB stick and after a Promotional Mug USB memory sticks were kept the longest.

Having proven their “promotional pedigree” over the past few years in 2012 the expected trends for this popular produce are likely to be:

  1. Continued increase in the number of units sold – it seems people, businesses and schools just can’t get enough of USB Flash Drives.
  2. Continued cannibalisation of the CD/DVD market – these old storage products are now considered “dated” and simply don’t convey the right image as a medium for handing out data.
  3. The Twister or “Swivel” model as it is sometimes referred to is predicted to top seller again. It’s held this position
    Promotional USB Sticks

    Promotional USB Sticks

for a number of years now because it’s a small, capless and colourful product that takes print well.

  4. Memory will get cheaper and the default promotional USB drive given away by the end of 2012 will have at least 4GB of storage compared to the typical 1GB drive that is given away now.
  5. USB 3.0 (also dubbed SuperSpeed USB) will start to gain momentum during 2012. Intel’s entry into the market in early 2012 will mean that most PC’s from the summer of 2012 will ship with USB 3.0 on-board. This will drive demand fore USB 3.0 peripherals and storage products.
  6. Custom (fully bespoke) USB flash drives will grow in popularity as the price differential between them and a “standard factory” design reduces.
  7. More customers will take advantage of pre-loading the USB flash drives with their own content (sales brochures, media files, web links etc.)  before the USB sticks are handed out.

Unfortunately we also expect to see more fraud and more sales of “masked” and sub-standard USB flash drives. The growth in the market is encouraging more companies to try and cut corners and buy from sites like Alibaba or direct from China. This is fine if you have the time to undertake appropriate checks and you’re confident you have a way of getting your money back should things go wrong otherwise it can be very risky. Don’t become a fraud statistic in 2012.

Promotional USB Flash Drives Will Be In Short Supply During Chinese New Year

Tuesday, December 20th, 2011

Chinese New Year is coming at us like a steam train and pretty soon it’s going to be too late to avoid the mayhem it causes to the promotional USB flash drive market.

We say it every year and every year we end up with disappointed customers who wanted a specific USB flash drive and in a particular pantone matched colour. In 2012, the Year of the Dragon, the holiday break is going to be even longer than normal with lots of factories closing from the 6th January to the 4th February – during this period nothing gets produced and nothing gets shipped. Nada, zip, nothing!!

Even when the factories return to work it take a week or so before things start to get back to “normal” but there are always the inevitable backlogs to deal with so typical leads times of 7-10 days can be stretched to several weeks.

Promotional USB Flash Drives

Promotional USB Flash Drives

If you know you have an event, show, seminar, press launch or any other activity for which you need printed or promotional USB flash drives during January to mid-February then you need to be placing your orders now! Don’t put it off because Christmas is looming or you think you’ll be able to “sort it out” in the New Year because you might find you can’t.

Having been through the trauma of Chinese New Year factory shut-downs for the last 9 years we now do all we can to ensure continuity of supply to our customers even it the supply is limited to a small number of flash drive models and colours. But, with a limited supply in the market and lots of customers chasing the stock the tendency is for the prices to shoot up (partly because UK print costs are higher and partly because of usual supply/demand economics) – so, whilst you may find some stock your model choices, colour choices and memory size choices are likely to be very limited and you’ll end up paying a premium for your failure to plan ahead.

Without wishing to sound like a broken record we strongly urge anyone who is likely to want printed USB sticks to plan ahead now and get any order(s) in early. You don’t have to pay for them when you order them, you’ll get exactly what you want and you’ll save yourself money – pretty compelling arguments to get any internal (early) approvals you might need.

Understandably this is not always possible but at least armed with an understanding of the issues/challenges you can hopefully find a way to work with the situation.

If you are too late then don’t forget that USB2U hold thousands of USB sticks in stock and can deliver them (printed) in as little as 24hrs – you may have to compromise a little on model and colour but at least you’ll have something!

Promotional USB vs CD

Monday, August 1st, 2011

There have been a lot of articles on our site recently showing how USBs memory sticks are taking over uses that were dominated by other forms of technology (for example our previous article on how Ford are now installing USB sockets instead of CD players), we have compared the USB flash drive to cloud.  All of these articles and particularly our article on University graduation photographers however got us thinking about how USB flash drives compare to CDs.

Promotional USB Flash Drives vs CDs

Some industries, especially photographers who use promotional devices to store data have been quite slow in moving from CDs to USB flash drives.  Considering the amount of time that logo USB drives have been around and have been affordable enough to compete with promotional CDs most of these industries have been laggards in adopting new technology.  We can’t tar all of the companies within these industries with the same brush as we have been seeing an increasing number of photographers and promotional companies move platforms from the CD to the more advanced branded USB flash drive.  We are however, still surprised at those who are still using CDs and are questioning whether or not they should make the switch.

For those who can’t decide whether or not to change, we wanted to make the most important advantages of using promotional USB memory sticks over CDs as clear as possible:

  1. USB flash drives have much quicker transfer speeds.  Whether downloading or uploading data to a USB memory stick the speeds are arguably much faster.  The average transfer speed for a USB flash drive is 480MB/S whereas the average CD drive at 32x has only 39MB/S.  This makes the duplicating time of data much quicker especially if a large amount of devices are being used.
  2. Storage capacity ranges from a small 64MB to a huge 16GB and the price changes accordingly accommodating for all data needs – something not possible with CD’s.
  3. All USB memory sticks are easily re-usable as opposed to the difficulty involved in writing a CD and having to make sure that the CD/R style is used.  Customers can therefore use the device as opposed to throwing it away after its use.
  4. Branded USB flash drives are much smaller and more portable than CDs as they can easily be put into a pocket or onto a key ring without difficulty.  This makes them really effective as a promotional tool especially at trade shows where customers will likely leave carrying a lot of heavy brochures and give-aways etc.
  5. USB sticks are not as sensitive as CDs for being scratched and worn down.
  6. We know that this point, strictly speaking, is subjective however, we believe that branded USB flash drives are much more appealing and ‘cooler’ than CDs.

Despite these clear advantages that USBs have over CDs we are aware that they do hold some value.  CDs have a large printable area; if that is an important factor in your promotional needs check out our USB credit card range that allow for a large, full colour print area.  Our branded memory sticks also come with a range of packaging options which can also be branded and printed on.  CDs can also be printed at home which may be important for photographers, it is important to note however, that the quality of a products often reflects on the quality of the service or business which is why an increasing number of companies are moving over to branded USB memory sticks.  There is also, most likely a perception that CDs are much cheaper than logo USB sticks however, with the price of flash memory changing all the time and much of the cost in the printing and personalisation of the promotional media the difference in price is getting smaller and smaller.

We hope that we have made our case clear and that anyone who currently uses promotional CDs will give branded USB flash drives a try.

What Are The Benefits Of Pantone Matched USB Flash Drives

Tuesday, June 14th, 2011

These days USB Flash Drives come in lots of different shapes and sizes so finding a model that is going to be suitable for your conference, press launch or trade show “should” be pretty easy.

Pantone Matched USB

Pantone Matched USB

There are hundreds of standard factory designs available some with a cap that twists, some where the USB connectors retracts, and some that have a removable cap. The majority are manufactured from plastic; some from plastic and aluminium but you can also get versions that are made from leather or stainless steel.

Ironically with so much choice making a decision can be daunting. Some of the most important things to consider when making your selection are:

  • Will the USB Flash Drive I choose be large enough to take my logo and show it off to best effect? Its surprising how “scrunched up” a logo can look if you print it on the wrong style of USB flash drive. A good idea is to make sure when getting quotes that you also get your supplier to send you high quality mock-ups showing you your artwork/logo on your short listed USB drives.
  • If you expect the flash drives you hand out to have a reasonable life rather than just used once or twice and then discarded then it’s worth choosing a model and print style that will preserve your brand. After all, you’re paying for the USB flash drives so you want your brand to survive and not rub off after a couple of weeks!

Some USB flash drives can be engraved and some look great with a resin dome sticker. Both of these options are more resilient to scratches and bumps picked up in everyday use. Dome stickers are not “cheap stickers” but are high quality resin stickers commonly used by the computer and automotive industry and allow a protective layer to be applied over a high quality 4-colour print.

  • Choose a flash drive in a colour or finish that will compliment your brand or logo. Don’t settle for a standard “factory” colour or what the supplier happens to have available because getting the colour right can make all the difference to the finished product. If you’re not sure get your supplier to work up a variety of examples for you to consider.
  • Cap or No Cap – The most popular promotional USB flash drive continues to be the capless Twister model.
Colour Matched USB Flash Drives

Colour Matched USB Flash Drives

Finally don’t forget how powerful pantone matching can be. This is one sure fire way of lifting the profile of your flash drives. Pantone matching is simply colour matching the body shell to one of the primary colours from your logo. As the examples here show if you choose the right colour the finished flash drives can look stunning.

Black, Small But Perfectly Formed

Monday, June 13th, 2011

Not all USB memory sticks are born equal. Some are large, some are small, some are manufactured from plastic whilst others are lovingly crafted from brush aluminium or leather. Some only have a teeny, tiny memory capacity whilst others have a stonking 16GB or 32GB to play with.

Small USB Memory Sticks - Nano

Small USB Memory Sticks - Nano

As ever beauty is in the eye of the beholder and at USB2U we’re quite taken by these small, black Nano Slider USB flash drives. It’s the first time we’ve produced them in black and we (and the customer) are delighted with the results. The black finish on the USB stick works particularly well with the two-tone blue print and the attached black keyring attachment finishes it off perfectly!

At only 33mm x 12mm the Nano Slider is the smallest USB memory stick we supply so if you are looking for something that sits comfortably on a keyring then this is about as handy and unobtrusive as it gets.

The case (shell) colour can be produced in any colour you want albeit black we’ve decided does look pretty spectacular. Despite the small size of the Nano it can still be supplied with memory up to 16GB.

Whichever model of branded USB memory sticks you choose it’s worth thinking about loading data onto them before you hand them out to your customers, prospects or staff. The primary function of a USB stick is to hold and carry data so it makes sense to use the memory you are paying for to pre-load your sales brochures, price lists and any other collateral.

Most recipients of a promotional USB stick will plug it into a PC or Mac and will typically look at any files that are loaded onto the stick. Whether you “lock” the data onto the stick is optional but if you’re only buying sticks with a small amount of memory on them locking the data is not recommended because people simply won’t use them if there is no space left onto which they can save their own data. If they don’t use them then you won’t get any on-going brand exposure, which is one of the usual benefits of giving away USB memory sticks.

Promotional USB Flash Drives – Normal Service Resumes

Tuesday, February 22nd, 2011

Phew! We all know it’s coming but irrespective of how much forward planning goes into managing the extended closure of the flash drive factories in China every year the Chinese New Year holiday throws up its own challenges and leaves many customers frustrated and disappointed.

Chinese New Year is a national holiday and technically whilst it only lasts around 10 days lots of people take an extended break to give them time to travel home to see their families – bearing in mind “home” can be several thousands of miles away the extended break is perhaps no surprise.

During the Chinese New Year holiday pretty much everything comes to a standstill; the factories that produce flash memory modules, the factories that produce the flash controller chips, the factories that assemble the finished flash drives and lots of the freight haulage companies close. It’s a bit like letting a steam train that’s been clattering along at 80mph come to a stop and then extinguishing the boiler fires.

Restarting the train takes time, you need to re-light the fires, build up the steam pressure again and then gradually start to gain momentum.

USB Steam TrainA week after the return from the Chinese New Year holidays we’re now full steam ahead again and we’re turning around customer orders for promotional USB flash drives within 10-days of order – sometimes quicker!

We always carry lots of stock in the UK that we can print and deliver within 48hrs if you’re in a hurry but you will inevitably be limited in terms of design, colour and memory size and you’ll also pay a premium for the UK print charges. If you have the time you’re always better off letting us manufacture and print your USB flash drives at one of our factories in China, this way you get exactly what you want and it’ll be cheaper!

USB Credit Cards Being Flashed Around This Christmas

Friday, December 10th, 2010

Over recent years credit cards have become the way for millions to fund their Christmas expenditure with Consumer Intelligence suggesting that over 55% of shoppers plan to pay for their gifts with a credit card. Christmas is an expensive time of the year and understandably many consumers turn to credit cards to help them with their purchases and their budgeting.

Over 30 million people in the UK currently hold credit cards and the average time to clear Christmas debts racked up on the cards is 5 months! Despite concerns about the ease of access to debt more and more people are actually paying down their credit cards and for the first time in years the total number of cards in circulation is falling.

USB Credit Cards

USB Credit Cards

The explosive growth in the use of bank cards of all types; debit, credit, ATM has seen the “form factor” (the shape plastic card) become the de facto standard for a range of other products including Gift Voucher Cards, ID Cards, Photo Driving Licenses, Membership Cards and so on. We now take for granted that “plastic cards” designed to be carried around by a person in their wallet; purse, bag or pocket will be the same size the world over. In essence these cards are produced to a global standard to ensure they fit into bags, wallets, card readers, swipe machines, scanners, card carries and so on.

Any card issued that fails to comply with these size standards is unlikely to get used because consumers have grown to expect cards to comply with this design standard and they have organised their personal accessories (bags, wallets, purses etc.) around this standard.

USB Credit Cards

USB Credit Cards

It is perhaps no surprise then that the latest generation of USB flash drives have been produced in the shape of a standard credit card. At just 2mm thick USB credit cards are marginally thicker than a standard card but they still fit comfortably into any standard wallet or purse. When you consider these USB credit cards contain a USB connector, a flash memory controller and a flash memory chip that capable of storing hundreds of thousands of documents it’s a pretty amazing feat.

USB credit cards have also been seized upon by the promotional gift sector where sales are rocketing. Sales have been fuelled by several factors including the ability to print larger, more complex and more vibrant full colour prints on the cards and the immediate acceptance of the product by the consumers who can immediately find a “home” for the card in their wallet or purse.

For years credit card companies have fought over what they call “share of wallet” – that’s getting their card as the preferred card and their brand burned into the psyche of the user. Today USB Credit Cards have the ability to fight for space in the same wallet and if they achieve this position the brand printed on the USB credit card will get continued and positive exposure.

Expect USB Credit cards to continue to get thinner and expect to see more and more of them around. Whilst you can’t buy your Christmas presents using them you can certainly store your Christmas lists, photos, movies and music on them.
