Let Branded USB’s Give You Some Confidence in Presentations

Tuesday, July 19th, 2011

Most of our employees here at USB2U have a business background and are always looking for ways to improve their business skills.  Recently one of our employees ‘stumbled upon’ an interesting article sharing pointers and advice on how to give polished presentations.  The article was an interesting read and included pointers about where to sit, how to use a digital presentation to your advantage and the sort of language to use.

One piece of advice stood out above the rest.  It gave advice on how to most effectively use handouts to accompany a presentation.  The article said that handouts should never be given out at any time during a presentation.

We all know what happens if handouts are given to us at the beginning of a presentation.  Even if you haven’t given a presentation recently, you’ve most likely been in one where this has happened.  Eyes go down, everyone reads ahead and if you’re lucky they are sometimes on the right page.  It’s more likely that your audience are trying to calculate how much longer they will be sat for by the amount of pages and slides.

As we all know, if handouts are to be used, they should be provided after a presentation to add value or accompany it as opposed to being a competitor for your attention.

We all have a stack of paper from previous presentations on which we took notes, never to read or refer to again, yet we cant bring ourselves to put them straight in the bin in case we need them in the near future.  Months later on the cycle of the blue moon when we come to tidy our desk, we dig out these presentation slides and have no hesitation in throwing them away.

‘What has this got to do with logo USB flash drives?’ I hear you ask.  Well, if handout information should be something that adds value to a presentation, but if people don’t refer back to the information, what’s the point in the handout?  Wouldn’t it be much more effective if you used an impressive company branded USB memory stick?

Think about the change in attitude of your audience when at the end they are given a useful USB flash drive.  It’s more likely that they would get back to their desk and plug the flash drive into their computer to find out what has been saved.  They could find a PDF version of your presentation, the hand out document, web links taking them directly to the Internet pages that you referred to and anything else that you found necessary to give the added value that your presentations deserves.  Referring back to your presentation information will become interesting.

Our new Clip USB flash drive is a small, sleek and professional looking memory stick that is perfect for this purpose.  It can double as a paper clip holding documents together or sit nicely on a suit or jacket pocket.

Using a branded USB memory stick can add value and make that impression that your presentation needs to secure the job, win the pitch or impress your boss.

Printed USB Flash Drives in Shiny Metal Boxes

Wednesday, July 6th, 2011

If you’re looking to give away USB flash drives printed with your company logo on at a trade show, an exhibition, a conference or a press launch then you’re not alone because thousands of companies give away millions of promotional USB Flash Drives every year.

Flash Drive Gift Boxes - Tins

Flash Drive Gift Boxes - Tins

With more and more companies using flash drives to promote their brand and products its important if you invest in them that they make an impact when you hand them out. You’ve only got a few seconds to attract and retain people attention so make the most of this time by doing the best job you can with your USB drives.

One option is to consider giving the USB flash drives out in a gift box. Admittedly you’ll have to contend with the anti-packaging lobby that are opposed to all sorts of unnecessary packaging because of the potential damage it does to the environment but arguably if you really want to make an impact packaging will give you the edge.

Tin Gift Boxes

Tin Gift Boxes

There are lots of different packaging solutions for USB flash drives ranging from a basic white (unprinted) cardboard boxes all the way through to an aluminium tins with a custom foam insert for the USB drive and other accessories you are including (lanyards, keyrings etc.). Pretty much all of the boxed can be printed (the tins can be engraved) and they don’t add much to the overall cost albeit there is a bit of a “hit” on the carriage costs because of the increased weight.

If you opt for the presentation tins there are three different options: tin with “see through” window lid, tin with removable lid and finally a tin with a hinged lid.

Printed Tins really are the pinnacle of packaging for promotional flash drives. They might be overkill in some circumstances but if you’re targeting high net worth clients or you want a really nice “thank you” gift for speakers at a conference then its certainly worth going the extra mile and getting some printed tin gift boxes produced.

Green Lantern Turkey Saved By Cool Custom USB Flash Drives

Wednesday, June 22nd, 2011

The critics have almost universally panned Green Lantern, the movie based on DC’s ages old comic book, launched in the UK last week. At a cost of £200 million the backers of the film must be hoping that the public will largely ignore the ravaging from the reviewers and turn out to watch the film anyway.

DC Entertainment, home to such iconic DC Comics properties as Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman must have had high expectations when the film was given to Martin Campbell to Direct. Campbell was responsible for Casino Royal and the Legend of Zorro but Green Lantern relies heavily on CGI effects and this is not a format that Campbell has worked with before. Unfortunately this shines though in the results on the screen.

o coincide with the launch Mimoco, a Boston-based design house and creators of the MIMOBOT® line of designer USB flash drives teamed up with Warner Bros. (on behalf of DC Entertainment) and have introduced a range of USB flash Drive based on a number of the characters from the Green Lantern movie.

The Green Lantern Flash Drives are great, they’re cute, they’re a little wacky looking and they’re a success, which arguably is more than you can say about the film itself.

Of course you don’t have to be Warner Bros to commission your own range of USB flash drives. Whilst Mimoco have done an excellent job in designing these flash drives for Warner Bros here at USB2U we’ve designed and produced hundreds of custom USB flash drives for out customers for all sorts of events and activities.

Examples include USB guitars, USB fork-lift trucks, USB eggs, USB erasers and USB toilets to name but a few. Custom USB flash drives are an excellent way to increase awareness, to grab people’s attention and to get some “chatter” (virtual and real) going around abut your event and or product.

Compared to standard USB flash drives that are printed or engraved with a logo Custom USB drives are a little more expensive and they take longer to manufacture but the small incremental cost and the slightly longer lead time is definitely worth it if you want create a real “wow” factor when you hand them out.

Don’t worry if you haven’t got a design finalised, we have our own in-house design team with years of experience who can work with you to design a custom USB drive for you.

Anyone Fancy A Game of USB Jenga

Wednesday, June 8th, 2011

Not only do wooden USB flash drives make great promotional giveaways but if you order enough they’re brilliant for playing USB Jenga with. Test you physical and metal prowess with our wooden USB twister flash drives!

USB Jenga

USB Jenga

Of course we’re not suggesting for a minute that you should while away the hours at work or at any trade show you’re attending by playing Jenga with you precious wooden flash drives but it’s certainly an interesting way to attract attention – just make sure it’s the right sort of attention.

Wooden USB flash drives have undergone a bit of a renaissance lately with interest fuelled by their strong “eco” credentials and the launch of lots of new designs and styles.

Most “wooden” USB flash drives are actually manufactured from bamboo, which is super environmentally friendly (partly because it grows at around 1m per day). It’s also very tough and hardwearing and it looks great engraved or printed.

If you’re company wants to push out a message about being “environmentally conscious” then you could do a lot worse then using wooden (or bamboo) USB flash drives as a promotional product.

Make sure you pre-load them with all of the sale material and collateral that you’d normally print – this way not only do you end up with an environmentally friendly promotional product but you can take it one stage further by saving on paper, print and transport costs. It’s also a lot easier to carry a few hundred bamboo USB flash drives loaded with sales material rather than boxes and boxes of brochures (many of which end up in the bins at trade shows because people don’t want to trudge around with them)

Wooden USB Flash Drives

Wooden USB Flash Drives

If you choose a wooden USB flash drive you don’t have to compromise of storage capacity or performance – they are available in memory sizes of 128MB all the way up to a massive 16GB onto which you could store the equivalent of a small library!

To really appreciate just how good these products are its worth getting a sample so if you are interested just call us or fill out our on-line enquiry form and one of our team will be in touch in a flash and they’ll arrange a sample for you.

House Builders Boost Sales With Promotional USB Flash Drives

Wednesday, May 25th, 2011

The last few years have been pretty torrid for the house-building sector over the past few years. The number of new houses started in March 2011* was 29,140 which sounds like a reasonable number but its 41% down from the peak reached in March 2007.

Although there has been a slight uplift in starts (and completions) over the last couple of months it’s still much too soon to get overly optimistic about an early recover in the housing market.

USB Sticks

USB Sticks

One of the challenges for any housing developer is keep their stock moving and the cash flow as healthy as possible. Buying the right development plots and building houses in a style that people want is of course fundamental but much of the challenge of getting the houses sold and sold quickly depends on the strength of the sales and marketing activity around any given development.

Getting prospective house buyers across the threshold of the show homes is incredibly important particularly in areas where there is lots of competition.  Social networking now plays a big part (or should play a big part) in the overall marketing strategy of any house building company – its an ideal way to interact with prospective buyers get details of new development and offers in front of an engaged audience – but beware it needs managing so that it does not get taken over by any aggrieved customers!

But what about the use of USB flash drives? Is there a place for promotional USB flash drives in any sales and marketing mix? Well, some housing developers clearly think so because they are now buying them with their brand and contact details printed on and then giving them away at strategic points in an effort to encourage more visitors to the show homes.

Before being handed out the flash drives are pre-loaded with lots of information on the development(s) including video clips, floor plans, site plans, special offers and links to their websites.

The beauty of handing out flash drives (albeit you need to be targeted) is that people can’t resist plugging them into their PC or Mac to find out what’s on them. They also tend to hang onto them for their own personal data storage so you get on-going brand exposure.

Handing out promotional USB flash drives in this speculative manner is not cheap but only the house builders can judge from any uplift in vists/sales if it’s a cost effective strategy.

Ash Fallout Could Delay USB Flash Drive Deliveries

Monday, May 23rd, 2011

There’s a certain amount of deja vu about the events unfolding in Iceland at the moment. It was only a year ago that the eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland and the subsequent ash cloud that drifted south closed airports across a significant part of Europe and brought travel and trade to a grinding halt. On Saturday the Grimsvotn volcano in Iceland burst into life with its most powerful eruption in 100 years. The initial plume of smoke and ash from the eruption was sent 12 miles into the air and forecasters are now predicting that the ash cloud “might” reach parts of Scotland and Northern Ireland as early as tomorrow with the ash then drifting down across the rest of the UK later this week.

It’s too soon to say what the impact will be on UK airspace. Last year UK airspace was shut down completely as a precaution but this time airlines will make their own decisions about whether it is safe to fly. The National Airspace Crisis Management Executive is currently meeting every six hours to assess the situation and make recommendation accordingly.

Icelandic air traffic control has already imposed a “no-fly zone” around the volcano the country’s main airport is closed and all domestic flights are cancelled. Local geophysicist Pall Einarsson said the eruption was on a different scale to the one in Iceland last year. “It is not likely to be anything on the scale that was produced last year when the Eyjafjallajokull volcano erupted,” he said.

The ash particles from this eruption are larger than those from the Eyjafjallajokull eruption last year and as a result they fall to the ground more quickly. Hopefully this will mean less disruption to flights. If the UK airspace were closed, even for just a couple of days, this would have a disastrous effect on the delivery of time critical promotional USB flash drives. Pretty much all company branded and promotional USB flash drives are manufactured and assembled in China and flown into the UK with companies like UPS, DHL and TNT. Amazingly the normal lead-times to get these USB sticks produced and shipped into the UK is normally around 6-10 days but unplanned airspace closures can wreak havoc with this.

If you have got promotional USB flash drives that are due to be delivered during the next week now would be a good time to “cross your fingers” and hope things don’t et any worse. You might also want to look at contingency options just in case the worse does happen!

At USB2U we always hold lots of blank, unprinted USB flash drives in stock in the UK and we can get these printed and delivered within 48hrs – we can’t guarantee you a wide choice of colours or memory size options but we should be able to help with a solution if your USB memory sticks get caught up in any Volcano delays.

Thunderbolt USB Flash Drives – HP Decision Muddies the Waters

Thursday, May 19th, 2011

In February this year Intel announced a new High Speed technology called Thunderbolt™  – PC’s and Macs that support “Thunderbolt” will benefit from data transfer speeds of up to 10Gbps which put simply will enable the transfer of a full-length HD movie in around 30 seconds!

Thunderbolt VS USB 3.0

Thunderbolt VS USB 3.0

Thunderbolt has been a joint development with Apple so it came as no surprise that its first appearance was in the new MacBook Pro series that was announced at the same time.

Considering that USB 3.0 is only just beginning to reach the market the announcement of Thunderbolt took many by surprise and raised doubts over what will emerge as the dominant standard for peripherals and data transfer – the spectre of another VHS Vs Betamax struggle is not something the industry really needs just now.

Whilst USB 3.0 products are backwards compatible with USB 2.0, Thunderbolt is completely different (different cables, different connectors and completely different protocol) so USB products, including USB flash drives will not work with Thunderbolt.

USB 3.0 flash drives are only now beginning to appear on the market and are still carrying quite a hefty “early adopter” premium. Whether Thunderbolt will or can spawn an equivalent to a USB flash drive is not clear but a Thunderbolt Flash Drive with data transfer speeds of 10Gbps would revolutionise the portable data storage space.

BUT, The announcement this week by Hewlett-Packard (the worlds largest producer of PC’s) that it considered using Intel’s Thunderbolt but is sticking with USB 3.0 because of wider support has further confused the market. HP has not ruled Thunderbolt out completely instead saying, “We did look at [Thunderbolt]. We’re still looking into it. Haven’t found a value proposition yet.”

So, with HP now having gone away to try and work out what the “value proposition” is the market is fractured around two emerging technologies. Not ideal and undoubtedly there will be winners and losers as this plays out. For now it’s just a matter of “watch this space”.

USB Keys – Open Up New Marketing Opportunities

Monday, May 9th, 2011

When people think of USB flash drives they typically think of standard shaped flash drives like the ones your buy from any high street store. These are normally made from plastic, are rectangular in shape and the focus tends to be more on function than form.

As a basic flash drive they’ll do a good job at storing data and enabling it to be carried around easily but these standard plastic USB drives are not the best solution if you are looking to make a marketing impact and give your brand a bit of a boost. Why settle for a standard plastic (boring) flash drive when there are now so many exciting alternatives available.

USB Keys

USB Keys

USB flash drives are the promotional product of the moment primarily not only because they are now available (fully printed) for a few pounds but also because they:

  • Have a high perceived value by the people they are given to
  • They’re easy to use
  • They’re small and portable
  • They take print and branding well
  • They create a bit of a buzz and an impact when handed out
  • They’re about the only reasonably promotional product that you can pre-load your sales data and presentation data on before you hand them out.
  • Their cost can be fully or partially offset when you pre-load them with data because you save money on brochure printing and transport costs.
  • They’re cheap to mail out as part of any physical DM pack because they’re light and thin – some options are thin and light enough to qualify for standard 1st class postage rather than packet post.
USB Key

The promotional USB flash drive market is incredibly competitive at the moment. One of the benefits of this is continuous innovation in their design and fabrication. Today there are hundreds of different models available including wooden flash drives, credit card shaped flash drives and wooden USB barrels to name just a few.

One of the more interesting new USB sticks to emerge in the last year or so is the USB key. This is a metal flash drive in the shape of a key – various key shapes are available – they’re thin, robust and they look fantastic when engraved with a company logo or you can use resin stickers on them if you need to reproduce a coloured logo or brand.

Just like any “regular key” they slip easily onto a standard key ring along with the rest of your keys (yes they’ll get a bit battered and scratched over time just like any key) but by being with your car and house key you’ll always know where it is.

Pantone Matching On USB Flash Drives – Not an Exact Science

Thursday, April 14th, 2011

If you want to make an impact with your printed promotional USB flash drives then one option available to you is to colour match, or pantone match as its commonly referred to, the body shell of the USB flash drive.

Most USB flash drives are manufactured in a range of standard colours with some of the more popular models like the Twister USB flash drive typically available in around 20 different colours. Obviously, the more standard colours there are available for a given model, the more likely it is that you are going to find a colour that works with, and compliments your company or school logo.

But, if you want a specific colour for your USB flash drive then the only option is to find a supplier not only willing to produce the flash drive in your preferred colour but to find one that is able to do it at a reasonable price. Pantone matching or colour matching the plastic that forms the shell of your chosen flash drive is a manual process, its adds time to the manufacturing schedule and it is not an exact science. These are all elements that build in cost and often the cost of pantone matching can be high, particularly if you only order a small number of USB flash drives – this is simply because some of the fixed costs involved in creating the specific colour of plastic to be used in the manufacture of your flash drive are amortised over a small number of USB sticks.

pantone colour book

The basic principle of pantone matching is that each final “mixed” colour is given a number (a pantone number) thus ensuring that this colour can be repeated over and over again by a printer to ensure consistency of print/colour. Pantone matching is the way in which companies manage consistency of brand and their brand logo. For example, every time you see the Coca Cola red it is the same red irrespective of where you are in the word, it’s the same with the Ford Motor Car Company blue or the Starbucks Coffee green. Consistency of colour and of brand representation is incredibly important to build consumer awareness, association and confidence.

However, a word of warning, even when you use pantone matching there is always going to be the possibility of minor colour variations because paint and dyes react different depending on the material they are applied to or mixed in with.  When pantone matching the plastic body shell of a USB flash drive there are three main issues to consider:

  1. The colour matched plastic used to form the shell of the flash drive body is mixed by hand so the end result is largely down to the experience of the individual undertaking the mixing.  Typical results are excellent but because it’s largely a manual process there is room for interpretation to creep into what many expect to be an exact science.
  2. Repeat orders of the same pantone matched USB flash drives may not be exactly the same. Because the process to create a pantone matched flash drive relies on a human to mix the colours with the core plastic material and it’ s therefore possible for there to be minor colour variations between each batch produced – this is no different from than when you buy rolls of wallpaper or some specialised paints -  batches will vary so be prepared for this. If you cannot accept any colour variations no matter how small from one batch to the next then consider buying blank “shells” from which future orders can be made.
  3. Pantone matched inks and dyes look different depending on the underlying material and colour they are applied to. So, if you are using a pantone matched ink and applying it to a white plastic it will look different compared to when the same ink or dye is applied to a silver metal clip (like the type used to form the out piece of the popular Twister USB flash drive)

Pantone matching promotional USB flash drives can create fantastic results and you’ll end up with a flash drive that is unique to your company but do be aware of the above “health warnings”. Although pantone colour coding was introduced to help reduce and ideally eradicate colour variations the reality is that minor colour variations will always occur when you are manufacturing a product that involves some degree of “manual” work and where the finished colour is applied to anything other than white paper.

Custom USB Flash Drives Keep Your Business Moving

Wednesday, April 6th, 2011

One of the challenges facing any business in these difficult times is to keep the sales leads coming in and to keep existing customers not only happy but continually informed about new products and services that you launch.

Of course the Internet has helped tremendously to keep the dialogue flowing with customers (new and old) and if you’re using Twitter and Facebook then these applications provide all sorts of interesting opportunities to engage with your customers in a dynamic way without being too invasive. Understandably not every business has the time or the expertise to use them but for many they are proving invaluable and eventually most businesses will need to embrace them.

Alternatives to the Internet and social networking sites like Facebook include the use of promotional USB flash drives. These have become incredibly popular over the last 2-3 years. The reasons are; falling prices, better range of designs, larger memory sizes and the ease with which data files can be loaded onto the flash drives.

USB flash drives are typically used as “giveaways” at trade shows to attract new customers, to hand out to journalists at press launches or they are simply sent to customers in the post to keep them appraised of new products – some companies are now sending USB flash drives loaded with their sales brochures because its cheaper than printing the brochures and paying for the postage costs to send them out.

Custom Removal Van

Custom Removal Van

To really make an impact with a USB flash drive it’s worth considering commissioning your own fully customised design. Whilst there are hundreds of different models of flash drive available “off the shelf” including flash drives made from wood, bamboo, leather and metal there is no doubt that a custom version can really make your brand and company stand out and keep you ahead of the competition.

Custom flash drives are typically manufactured in a shape that reflects the broad thrust of the business or alternatively they are made to look like a specific product, e.g. a tyre, a fork-lift truck, a removal van or an eraser. Anything is possible.

Custom USB flash drives can create a real buzz and lead to lots of internet chatter and discussion on social networking sites so they are a great way get “viral” discussions going.

Costing only a little more than standard factory models that are just printed with a logo they are definitely worth considering. The only downside is the lead-time which can be anything up to 6 weeks so if you do want to use a custom USB stick then you need to plan ahead.

If you don’t have artwork or a specific design in mind don’t be put off – any supplier of Custom USB flash drives worth their salt should have in-house designers that can work up some concepts for you to consider.
