USB 3.0 Flash Drives Begin To Emerge

Wednesday, March 31st, 2010

USB 2.0 has been with us for around 10 years so USB 3.0 has been a while arriving but with the launch of the first certified USB 3.0 product at the CES Show in Las Vegas in January its finally beginning to emerge.

The standards for USB 3.0, also dubbed SuperSpeed USB have been in development since 2007 with the final agreed specification handed over to the manufacturing community in 2009. There has, as you might expect, been lots of

USB 3.0

USB 3.0 - SuperSpeed USB

excitement and buzz around the launch of USB 3.0 not least because it will enable data transfer speeds which at 3.2 Gbit/second which are roughly ten times the speed achieved today with USB 2.0 – hence the shorthand of “SuperSpeed”.

Some of the first USB 3.0 flash drives to hit the market look as though they will come from PQI and Super Talent. Both of these companies have “announced” the forthcoming release of products, images and specs are available but it is still not, as far as we can tell, possible to buy them anywhere.

Even when the USB 3.0 flash drives are available you will only get true SuperSpeed performance if you are using them on a PC that is also fully enabled to support USB 3.0 and at the moment these are very few and far between. Consider also that the initial release of Windows 7 did not include drivers for USB 3.0 and that Intel are not planning to support the standard until 2011!

So, whilst USB 3.0 is now with us and products are beginning to emerge they are still very much products for the “early adopter” community. Mainstream use of USB 3.0 is still going to be a couple of years away by which time PC’s will ship with USB 3.0 as standard and the leading operating systems will have built in driver support.

Because USB 3.0 products will also carry a heft price premium until they gain mass market adoption there is going to be little to no impact in the short term (next couple of years at least) on the promotional USB flash drive market. Buyers of branded and promotional USB memory sticks are unlikely to pay the high price that USB 3.0 flash drives will demand particularly if they are going to be given away and even more so if the recipients are not really going to see any of the performance benefits that the standard offers.

Investing In USB Data Duplication So You Don’t Have To

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Are you about to order some branded flash drives for a forthcoming show, exhibition or event and you’re dreading the thought of having to load each and every one of them with data files.

We know the feeling. We’ve been supplying branded USB flash drives and fully customised (bespoke) USB memory sticks for many years and during this time we’ve pre-loaded hundreds of thousands of memory sticks on behalf of our

USB Duplication Service

USB Duplication Service

customers. In the early days we used to pre-load them one at a time using a 4-port USB hub connected to a PC and then “dragging and dropping” the content onto each memory stick. When the data was copied over we’d then have to “stop” and “eject” the memory stick via the operating system before removing each stick and starting the process all over again! As you can image this was a mind numbing and time consuming job that no one wanted to do.

Pre-loading data onto hundreds and occasionally thousands of memory sticks would take hours and in some cases days and as a result very few customers either considered or were will to pay for pre-loading of data.

Today things are very different. Commercial and automatic USB data duplication equipment means that thousands of memory sticks can now be loaded with data very quickly and at the press of a button. These professional systems are rack mounted and can be expanded to meet growing demand.

For our customers all it means is that they now supply us with the data they need loading onto their memory sticks. We then create a “master” USB memory stick with the data loaded onto it (which the customer approves) and we then use this “master” to replicate all of the other memory sticks they have ordered.

There is still the fiddly bit of preparing each stick for the load process and then re-packing them but its significantly easier and quicker than it used to be!

The beauty of the professional data duplication equipment that we use at USB2U is that during the data loading process we effectively test and QA each stick again before they are sent to our customers. We can also provide detailed reports on the overall amount of data loaded; the data transfer speeds of the sticks and any failures.

The level of investment in this professional equipment is significant but it allows us to offer a complete solution that includes the supply of branded flash drives and accessories, data loading and if needed fulfilment.

Free Data Loading On Printed Flash Drives

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

Rather than silly offers of Free Easter Eggs with every order we thought that in the current financial climate our customers might appreciate something a little more tangible. So during April 2010 we are offering free data loading on all orders for printed flash drives. That’s right the we will load your data onto all of your memory sticks for free, nada, zip, nothing, zilch in fact we won’t charge you for data-loading. Got it!

FREE USB Dataload with orders!

OK there are a couple of catches but they are reasonable ones:

  1. You have to buy the memory sticks from us – I’m afraid we won’t be data-loading them for free if you’ve purchased them from another supplier. We do offer just data loading so if this is a service you need just call us for a quote.
  2. The free offer only applies to orders where we are manufacturing the memory sticks, printing them and data loading them at our factory in China. In other words the free offer does not apply to our UK “rush” stock and rush service.
  3. The maximum of data we will load for free is a generous 100Mb.

Data loading usually costs up around 40p per stick so on an order for 500 branded memory sticks the savings are considerable. You don’t have to order 500 sticks to take advantage of this offer. Our minimum order is 50 pieces.

Why take advantage of this offer? Well a flash drive with your logo or brand printed on makes an excellent giveaway or promotional item. They are popular, well received, they are useful and they get noticed and more importantly they get your brand noticed every time they are used.

If you don’t pre-load data onto the sticks before they are given away then you’re missing a trick. You are after all paying for the memory in the memory stick so you might as well use it. Think about the range of material you could load onto the sticks. Typical examples would include sales brochures, price lists, press releases, presentation slides, media files, links to your website and product user manuals.

Given that it’s free you might as well take advantage of this cracking Easter offer. It won’t last forever but it’s certainly worth more than a freebie Easter egg!

Get Your Branded Memory Sticks in a Flash!

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

If you’re in a hurry for some branded USB memory sticks with your logo printed on them then we have lots of stock in the UK all boxed up and ready to ship at the drop of a hat (well a signed Purchase Order)!

Not only do we hold large stocks of blank, unprinted memory sticks from our most popular ranges but we can also offer a 48-hour turnaround on printing. We appreciate that not everyone has the luxury of being able to plan ahead and that’s why we have always offered a “rush” service from stock held in the UK.

Printed Flash Drives

Printed Flash Drives

Unlike some suppliers we don’t charge last minute “rush” fees but you will pay a little more for any last minute printing simply because its more expensive to get the memory sticks printed in the UK post manufacture than it is to get them printed at out factory in China during the production process.

If you want data loaded onto your printed flash drives (e.g. sales brochures, copies of slides, media files etc.) then that’s not a problem either because we offer a comprehensive in-house data loading and data replication service. If

USB Duplication

we’re supplying you with the memory sticks as well as doing the data loading for you then we’ll guarantee to beat any other price for data loading you get. Just call us and let us quote.

If you do have the luxury of time and we’re talking no more than 10-14 days then we can get your branded memory sticks produced, printed and data-loaded at our factory in China. The benefit of this is that you’ll have a much wider choice of memory sticks; colours and memory sizes and it will be marginally cheaper if we can supply you from our factory. Ordering from the factory also opens up options like pantone matching the body shell of the flash drive to any colour from your logo and have your data not only loaded but loaded so that it “auto-runs” every time the memory stick is used.

So whether you need printed flash drives in a hurry or have the benefit of time on your side we have a solution for you. Just give us a call or fill out our on-line enquiry form and one of our team will get back to you in a flash!

Branded USB Memory Stick Duplication, Replication, Data Loading

Friday, March 26th, 2010

When you buy promotional flash drives to hand out to customers at a show, exhibition or event then make sure you really get the best from your investment by, where at all possible, pre-loading the memory sticks with your sales material.

Whether you call it Duplication, Replication, Pre-loading, Data-loading or just copying its very easy to make sure that every branded memory stick you distribute has all of your sales brochures, price lists, company web site links, media files, promotional videos etc. on it.

Whilst the memory stick, assuming its printed and carries your brand/logo on, will do an excellent job of promoting your company’s name you will miss a trick if you don’t use the storage space on the stick to provide the recipient with lots of additional information about your company.

USB Data Duplication

USB Data Duplication

If you want you can also “lock” this data so it can’t be deleted but if you load too much data on the stick and don’t leave enough room for the user then they’re unlikely to use it and your brand won’t get the on-going use and exposure you have paid for. If you do decide to “lock” and protect any data on the memory stick bear in mind that this data will have to be ready early so that it can be loaded at the factory during manufacture. You can’t load and “lock” data post production.

The need to have the data ready early means that the vast majority of memory sticks are pre-loaded with data that is not locked. This is no bad thing because if the content is compelling it will be viewed and data that is not locked can be loaded at anytime meaning you have right up until the last minute before your event to load the data.

Of course if you’re faced with the prospect of unpacking and loading data onto hundreds or possibly thousands of memory sticks it can be pretty daunting. Ideally it’s a job left to the professionals because instead of having to load each memory stick one at a time they will use professional USB data duplication kit. This will get the job done quickly and easily and they will normally give you a report on the performance of each stick loaded with your data – think of it as another QA test on the memory sticks before they are distributed.

There are many dedicated data duplication companies in the market with many of them extending from CD and DVD duplication into USB duplication. These are fine but it does introduce another company into the loop and potentially extend the overall timeframe. If you can try and use a supplier of branded memory sticks that is able to offer data duplication as well as supply the memory sticks.

USB2U has a in-house USB data duplication services that it offers at competitive rates to all of its customers.

Tip 5 -The Hazards Of Buying Promotional USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, March 25th, 2010

In the fifth of the series of top tips to consider when purchasing customised USB memory sticks, we explain the top ten pitfalls when buying promotional USB memory sticks.

Buying branded USB memory sticks should be an effortless process and for the most part it is. However, there are many examples of where things have and could go wrong – some real horror stories! However, by asking the right questions and selecting a reputable supplier you can avoid most of these issues.

This guide provides the top ten hazards of buying promotional USB memory sticks and how to avoid them.

Find a reputable supplier

There are many UK companies providing branded USB memory sticks. As with any industry the quality of these companies varies widely. Whilst standard due diligence is always required, here are a few tips to help you with the process:

  • Reputation speaks volumes. Don’t be afraid to ask for references and testimonials from their existing customer base and make contact. If they have provided excellent service levels, they will delighted to share their branded memory stick successes.
  • Make sure there are full contact details on the web site including address and contact telephone numbers – and phone them!
  • It is always good practice to run a credit check to make sure your memory stick supplier is in good financial health. This is more important if you are being asked to pay upfront for the branded USB memory sticks.
  • Ensure they are working from a business premises. There is a growing trend for individuals pertaining to be companies working from home without the infrastructure to support you if things go wrong or they fall ill or go on holiday – it happens. A simple way to check this is by using Google Earth, or ask the question

Hidden costs

When stating your requirements to a USB memory stick supplier be specific about your needs and ensure that they are all met by studying your quotation carefully. Ask for terms and conditions and be aware of payment terms and delivery date promises. For example some companies will charge extra for print and origination, so ensure that these are covered in the quotation. There as also hidden ‘rush fees’ if deadline are not met, so again ensure these are full disclosed.

Quality of Chipset / Housing

If you quote sounds to good to be true – then it probably is! The core cost of any branded USB memory stick is made up of the USB body shell and USB flash chip components. There are several techniques to shave the costs on these, for example using inferior quality housing and reconditioned USB Memory chips.   Both carry reputational risk for you or your client if things go wrong. So ensure you ask for a sample to check the housing quality and your supplier provides new branded A Grade chipsets such as Samsung, Hynix, Micron or Intel.

It is also worth asking what the manufacturer’s Quality Assurance testing procedure is for branded memory sticks.

Proofs/screenshots

Most suppliers will mock up a visual of what the promotional USB memory stick will look like before production. This does not always match the finished product. So ensure that the proof carries the colour pantone references and size of the logo. The leading suppliers will provide a photo of your printed pre-production brand stick so you know exactly what you are going to get and there are no surprises!

Dataloads

Many clients are faced with the dilemma of whether they should add an autorun facility to their promotional USB promotional memory sticks.

An autorun facility allows users to insert a USB branded memory stick and for the computer to automatically run a programme e.g. a movie file or link directly to a web page.

The obvious advantages of this facility is that it ensures the user is presented with the information the client wants them to see, without having to find the information themselves. This makes is a very intuitive process and ensures the information on the USB memory stick is delivered. However there are some hidden drawbacks:

  • Nuisance factor. If one of the objectives is to ensure that the USB promotional memory stick is a keepsake that the end user will access on a regular basis then its worth bearing in mind that every time the user wants to access or save a document they will have to run through the dataload programme. Fine for the first few times, but thereafter they may find this an irritation and relegate the memory stick deep into a draw!
  • Autoruns will not work on Win 98SE or 2000 operating systems – beware there are still many users out there with these systems. You will also need to ensure that the appropriate code is written into any autorun for it to work on Mac operating systems.
  • Some corporate firewalls restrict autoruns, so the danger is that the end user will never see the data.

There is am alternative method, why not consider loading the data onto the USB branded memory stick with an icon labelled ‘Click Here To Start’ and allow the user to access the data when they want.  This data can be protected so it would not be deleted, but overcomes may of the issues detailed above.

Shipping / Customs

Almost all branded USB memory sticks are manufactured in the Far East and as such need to pass through both Chinese and Taiwanese and UK Customs. For the vast majority of orders this is pretty seamless process. However, any consignment can be pulled for inspection and customs may request additional information. If a global brand is printed on the promotional USB memory sticks they may ask for written authentication from the end clients that the goods are not counterfeit.  Either way a custom check will delay your order from a few days to up to 3 weeks!

Returning goods / Warranties

Unfortunately things go wrong! The mark of a good supplier is how they manage these issues. All customised USB memory sticks should carry at least a 12 month warranty. Ensure your supplier stipulates this as part of their Terms and Conditions.  However, if the items need replacing it make take several weeks for the branded USBs to be returned to the manufacturer and repaired or replaced.

Poor Packaging

Poor quality packaging can spoil a great looking USB memory stick. In particular the insert that holds the USB memory stick within a box needs to be of the same shape and size of the USB branded memory drive. Again the only solution is to have a sample of a box before you order.

Delivery Timeframe

Do not leave the ordering of branded USB memory sticks to the last minute unless you want to pay a premium for rush fees and limit your choice of what is available in the UK. Allow at least 2, ideally 3 weeks, from providing your supplier with the artwork, which kicks off the production process.

Quality Of Print

The printing of logos onto your branded memory stick is a real art form that at best makes a perfect reproduction of your logo at worst makes it look like real mess and something you would not want to associate your brand to. The typical printing process is spot or screen-printing. This is great for simple logos with up to 4 colours. However it cannot print tints, tones, complex logos or a logo with many colours. A new full colour printing process is now evolving allowing greater printing capabilities. Again if time permits ask for a pre-production printed sample and remove this potential dangers.

Look out for our next top tip, which will focus on the benefits of different USB models and designs.

Custom & Branded Flash Drive Awards 2010

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

We’ve had the BAFTA’s the Razzies and the Oscars so at USB2U we thought it was about time we celebrated the success of the humble USB memory stick.

They may not have the glamour and glitz of the film industry but to us and to our customers the memory stick is a “hero product” that punches well about its weight and we felt now was the time to recognise its endeavours throughout the last 12 months.

Custom and Branded Flash Drive Awards

The categories and awards are as follows:

Best Custom Flash Drive

This award is given to the company that has come up with the best creative design for a bespoke 3-D flash drive. The design had to be new, eye-catching, and play on the company name, logo or product. There was tough competition this year because of the huge demand for bespoke solutions but in our judgement the winner is: The Dolorex – The Pain Eraser Company: Intervet/Schering-Plough Animal Health Best Custom USB Flash Drive

Best “All Rounder” Memory Stick

This award has been given to the Twister style memory stick because time and time again it delivers for our customers. Its relatively small form factor belies an edgy strength and a rare flexibility. It’s become incredibly popular because it has no cap to lose; it carries print very well and comes in any colour you want. The Twister is simply the best all rounder bar none and is a popular winner: The Twister Best "All Rounder" USB Memory Stick

Best Pantone Matched Memory Stick

Throughout much of the last year we have been offering free pantone matching of the body shell of our most popular memory sticks to any colour from our customers logo. This is an excellent way to lift the printed stick from the ordinary into the extraordinary. Because of its popularity there was lots of competition in this category but the winner is: Parsley Media Pantone Match Twister
Best Pantone Matched

Best Stick and Box Combo

It not just about the memory stick but also how it’s presented that can often make the difference so this award is for the best-dressed flash drive. Not in a tuxedo but in a box and the winner is: Berry Systems Pantone Matched Twister & Magnetic Box Best USB Stick and Packaging Combp

Flash Drive Demand Continues in the Face of Difficult Market Conditions

Tuesday, March 23rd, 2010

Despite the current price volatility in the memory stick market their popularity as promotional giveaways continues unabated. The current weakness of Sterling (GBP) against the US Dollar has pushed prices back up a little but hopefully once the uncertainty of the UK General Election is behind us things will settle down and prices will fall again.

Whilst demand for branded memory sticks is not completely immune to pricing, orders continue to be strong with demand for bespoke and custom flash drives seeing a noticeable increase.

Market Conditions USB

The forecast for the remainder of 2010 is that prices of the core components that make up the memory sticks (the flash modules and PCB’s) will remain largely unchanged albeit the usual season peak in the run-up to Christmas will no doubt happen as it does every year.

The one real unknown is what will happen in the currency markets. Some analysts and speculators are suggesting that the pound (GBP) has now “bottomed out” and that there will be a slow but steady strengthening throughout the rest of the year.  But conversely others are predicting a rocky few months as the UK heads towards and comes out of the General Election.

Underpinning the demand for branded memory sticks is the realisation that not only do they make an excellent and popular giveaway but used properly they can also help to reduce other print, production and transportation costs. By pre-loading the memory sticks with sales brochures, price lists, presentations, media files and so on companies are now reducing significantly the amount of printed media they produce and take with them to trade shows, exhibitions and conferences. When these cost saving are offset against the purchase cost of the memory sticks (including the data loading) the business case for their purchase is pretty compelling.

The other major benefits that drive the popularity of memory sticks are:

  • High perceived value
  • Handy and easy to use
  • Large range of designs and styles
  • Great brand ambassadors
  • High levels of repeat usage
  • Easy to store and distribute

If you’re looking to buy branded memory sticks in the short term for your company then, given the current volatility in the market, make sure you shop around for the best all inclusive deal and lock in the price for as long as possible.

USB2U Launches New Fulfilment Service For Branded Memory Sticks

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

Demand for branded flash drives continues to grow apace as more and more companies seek to exploit the benefits that these hugely popular products offer.

Whilst we’re currently experiencing an upward “blip” in the pricing caused by the weakness of the Pound (GBP) against the Dollar (USD) the overall trend is downwards. As the price falls, particularly for lower capacity drives, the opportunities for the Sales and Promotions sector really start to open up. All of a sudden branded memory sticks pre-loaded with movie trailers, music files, dynamic links to web sites and loads of sales material are a viable option to post out to prospective customers.

USB Dome Sticker

Whilst the demise of Direct Mail has long been predicted it continues to be a key part of many companies marketing plans and increasingly we expect companies to use entry level branded memory sticks as part of these campaigns. One of the challenges facing any company wanting to post out branded memory sticks to a client base is handling the logistics of sourcing the printed memory sticks, arranging for the data to be loaded onto the sticks and then finding a company to handle the fulfilment of the mailer.

At USB2U we can now offer a complete end-to-end service, which starts at the design stage of the memory stick and ends in the outbound fulfilment of the printed memory sticks and accompanying marketing pack to your customers. The fulfilment service is managed in-house and leverages the packing and distribution infrastructure we have in place for our sister company – USBNow

Mini USB Dome Sticker

USBNow supplies a wide range of USB products to thousands of customers every month and has sent out around 500,000 orders over the past few years so your orders will be in safe hands.

We Never Tyre Of Custom USB Flash Drives

Wednesday, March 17th, 2010

BFGoodrich are one of the leading tyre manufacturers in the world so when it came to ordering a USB flash drive for one of their promotional activities they were adamant that the flash drive should reflect not only their brand but their core products – Tyres.

Standard branded memory sticks were never going to be able to do the job because whilst they are great at showing off a brand the challenge with BFGoodrich was to go the extra mile and come up with something that was not only visually excellent but was also a tactile representation of what they do and what they stand for.

Working with the BFGoodrich team we came up with the idea of a rubber USB wristband. These flash drives are a little different because they wrap around the users wrist just like a bracelet. They relatively light, easy to wear and look a lot like the charity wristbands that you see a lot of these days. But, for BFGoodrich the idea was to develop the wristband and create a unique mould so that the finished product was not only rubber but had a tyre tread on the surface.  The wristband was then produced in black and with their logo on and the end result looks stunning. In fact it looks just like a piece of tyre tread fashioned into a wristband!

USB Wristband

Whilst not to everyone taste there is no doubting the innovation behind it and the “wow” factor these custom memory sticks create. What BGGoodrich have shown is that with a little imagination you can come up with a really interesting, imaginative and eye-catching custom USB solution.

Custom memory sticks can be fashioned in 2-D and 3-D shapes and manufactured from a range of different and flexible materials. The incremental cost of a fully bespoke drive is not much more than a standard factory model but you do need to allow a little more time for the production because the factory will want time to produce physical samples and proofs for your approval. If you can afford the time and you can build it into your project plan then custom sticks are definitely worth the wait.
