Logo USB Custom Memory Sticks – What & Why?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

If you’re considering getting some USB memory sticks with your logo printed on them then why not take it one stage further and get a memory stick produced in the shape of your logo!

It’s true that the most popular approach is to simply print a brand or logo onto a standard factory designed stick but with the cost of custom memory sticks falling its now pretty much possible to make a memory stick in the shape of anything.

Here are some excellent examples of custom USB sticks made in the shape of a logo:

Custom USB

We specialise in working with our customers to produce customised memory sticks and whilst you need to allow an extra couple of weeks for the production process the overall effect can be amazing.

Don’t get put off by concerns about the costs either. Historically custom USB sticks were very expensive because the factories charges high initial set up fees and mould fees but today with so much competition in the market these are negligible.

Custom USB

Clearly a custom USB stick in the shape of your logo will be unique to you and really help with brand development and exposure. They also tend to create a strong “viral” marketing effect as they generate quite a lot of chatter and discussion.

If you’re interested get in touch with our sales team, send us over your logo and our in-house designers will work up some ideas and concepts for you.

What Are The Most Popular Logo USB Disks?

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

Its always interesting to know what other people are buying when you’re shopping so we thought we’d share with you what the most popular logo USB memory sticks are. The list below is based on actual orders placed with us over the last couple of years.

Most Popular USB Drive

Whilst fashions and designs will inevitably change over time these are very much the stalwarts of the logo USB sector at the moment.

Twister

Twister USB Drive

The Twister style memory stick is the “daddy” of the logo USB series of memory sticks accounting for over 50% of all branded memory sticks sold.

This fairly plain memory stick has become the preferred choice for many because there are some key elements to the design that make it a real winner.

  • a) It’s available from stock in a wide range of colours and the plastic (or rubber) body shell can be pantone matched at very little cost to one of the primary colours from your logo. Pantone matched versions are getting more popular and look sensational.
  • b) The twisting metal casing (hence the name) protects the USB connector from accidental damage and means there is no cap to lose.
  • c) It’s relatively small. The Twister is a compact USB Memory Stick so it’s easy to carry, and store and despite its size it carries a logo well..
  • d) It’s tough. The combination of the metal case and the rubberised body make it a particularly tough memory stick.
  • e) It’s easy to print on and its one of the few memory sticks that you can print a true 4 colour process onto. Real “photo-effect” finishes are possible making it the ideal choose if you have a complex brands or logos to reproduce.
  • f) Its popularity means that its quite often available from stock, handy if you’re up against a tight deadline for your logo USB sticks.

Chic

Chic USB Drive

The Chic style memory stick is a classic shaped design that’s pleasing on the eye, takes print well and just looks good branded with a logo. Of course its important that you choose the right colour to compliment your logo but if you struggle to find the right standard colour the Chic can also be pantone matched.

Here a few additional reason why the Chic is a popular logo USB stick:

  • a) Smart design – The Chic is a slim design and has a nice clean surface to print your logo onto with a metal trim to make it really stand out.
  • b) Supports Pantone matching of body – if you’d like your corporate pantone colour matched to the body of the drive we can do this at an affordable price.
  • c) Choose rubberised or glossy finish – there is no additional cost. When you place your order just let your Account Manager know which option you’d like.
  • d) Integrated loop for key rings or lanyards – if you want to connect a lanyard or key ring to your branded memory stick then again it’s easy with the Chic because the design incorporates this.
  • e) Cost – from our Classic Series its popularity means it’s one of the least expensive memory sticks so if you are working on a tight budget it’s a great choice without having to compromise on the quality or look of the product.

Probe

Probe USB Drive

The Probe logo USB flash drive has real panache and versatility. It comes in a range of different colours and can have an alternative coloured cap to the body allowing you to make a real statement. Can be printed in up to 4 spot colours and on both the cap and body. It’s available in a Gloss and Matt finish.

Like the Twister and Chic the Probe memory stick can also be pantone matched. The key features of the Probe are:

  • a) Choose rubberised or glossy finish – there is no additional cost. When you place your order just let your Account Manager know which option you’d like.
  • b) Integrated loop for key rings or lanyards – if you want to connect a lanyard or key ring to your branded memory stick then again it’s easy with the Chic because the design incorporates this.
  • c) Cost – from our Classic Series its popularity means it’s one of the least expensive memory sticks so if you are working on a tight budget it’s a great choice without having to compromise on the quality or look of the product.

Top 10 Tips For Buying USB Memory Sticks Printed with your Logo On

Thursday, October 29th, 2009

USB Memory sticks printed with your logo on are incredibly popular at the moment but there are a few golden rules to consider when sourcing them. Here’s our starter for ten:

USB Twister

  1. Be clear about what logo you want printed on the Printed USB sticks. In many cases you’re not going to have a huge amount of choice about which logo or brand to use particularly if you’re printing your corporate logo and you have clearly defined brand rules and guidelines to adhere to. But, there’s no doubt about it that some logo’s work better than others. Because of the relatively small amount of space the logo will be printed on a complicated or over fussy logo will not reproduce well. Try to use simple logos with strong colours that have a good visual impact. It may be necessary to adapt an existing logo to get the best effect.
  2. Printed USB

    USB Artwork

  3. Prepare the right artwork: Don’t expect to be able to use the low-resolution images from your company’s web site for printing. To get a great finish its essential that you make available to your supplier images in the highest resolution possible. Vector shape logos are preferred because they never lose any sharpness irrespective of how big or small you make them. Vector logos will typically be saved as .EPS or .AI files. If you have an in-house designer they’ll understand what’s needed.
  4. Select a memory stick that works with your logo: Sounds obvious really but some logos look better on certain style Printed USB Flash Drive than others. A popular option at the moment is to go for a model where the main body shell can be pantone matched to one of the primary colours from your logo. The end result when this is done looks fantastic because it looks as though the flash drive has been specifically designed for you. If you’re not sure what the best option is then ask your supplier to work up a range of “mock-ups” for you. They should be happy to do this for you and at no cost.
  5. USB Chic

  6. Printing is not the only option: Until recently spot printing was the only option available but now slightly more complex logos with colour blending can be accommodated using digital print technology. On metal-cased memory sticks you could also consider laser engraving. This is a professional looking, long lasting option.
  7. USB Memory Sizes

  8. Don’t skimp on the memory size: Whilst cost will of course be a determining factor its important to get the balance right between choosing the correct capacity and the budget available for your logo USB memory sticks. Low capacity memory sticks that don’t offer much on-going use to the recipient. They are “ok” if you’re just using them to distribute data but if you want them to have a life beyond the initial distribution its important you give the user a reason to carry them around. A memory stick with little or no real or perceived storage will just end up in the back of a drawer.
  9. Data to load? Get it ready early: If you have data that you want to load onto your logo branded memory sticks then try if at all possible to get it ready early. This way the data can be loaded during the manufacturing process for just a few pennies per stick. It’ll save hours of pain and heartache of doing it in-house or further cost if you have to have the data professionally loaded after they have been manufactured.
  10. Packaging Accessories

  11. Don’t forget the packaging and accessories:  If cost is a real issue or if the memory sticks are just promotional giveaways then you probably won’t want to run to the additional cost of presentation boxes or lanyards. But there’s no doubt about it that a good quality presentation tin or box coupled with a neck strap (lanyard) really raises the overall look of the end product and if you want to go the extra mile you can print your logo onto the gift box and embroider your logo into the lanyard.
  12. Allow enough time: Some supplier can provide printed memory sticks in a couple of days but you’ll be very limited in terms of choice, colour and the number of colours that can be printed. Ideally allow at least 14 days and this way you’ll be able to choose from a very comprehensive range and you’ll even have enough time for the sticks to be pantone matched. Remember the memory sticks are all produced in China so as well as the production time(s) the lead time of 14 days is to allow for the shipment of the finished product to you.
  13. 9. Don’t always buy the cheapest Printed USB’s: There are many horror stories of memory sticks being supplied with “used” or Grade “B” memory chips inside. Some factories also disguise smaller capacity chips and sell them as larger memory sizes. If you’ve been offered a price that no-one else can match or get close to then its time to ask some hard questions and make sure that chips are brand new, does the price include a warranty, if so how comprehensive is it? Finally, does the price include all of the costs, i.e. Artwork setup, production and delivery.
  14. Go with the right supplier: There are far too many people trying to make a ‘quick buck’ from unsuspecting customers looking to buy logo USB sticks so make sure you undertake proper due diligence. Get testimonials; check it’s a “real” business and not operating “side of desk” somewhere. Make sure they are a registered company and have QA processes and warranty policies in place.

Custom Memory Sticks – Why?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Branded USB Memory Sticks are incredibly popular at the moment with literally millions being produced for schools, universities and companies around the world.

Their popularity stems from the intrinsic usefulness of the product itself, their perceived value, their portability and

their effectiveness at carrying and promoting the brand of the company who distribute them or give them away.

But, in some ways their growing popularity can also dilute the effect they are purchased for. Familiarity breeds contempt and we can all get too much of a good thing. After all no matter how useful they are there are only so many USB memory sticks that you can realistically use or want.

There is no doubt that the if you are looking to distribute data; be it presentation slides, documents, video footage, music, applications etc then branded memory sticks are a convenient and handy way to do it. They are reasonably cost effective, there is a wide range of them available and they look good printed with a brand or logo on.

But, if you are looking for something that will create a “wow” factor, something that will really give your brand or product a boost and maybe get some “viral” type of discussion going then its worth considering a custom USB memory stick.

Custom USB Stick

Custom USB Stick

Once only the preserve of large corporates with big budgets and in-house design teams, custom USB memory sticks are now within the budget and grasp of pretty much anyone ordering just a few hundred sticks. All that’s needed is an idea or concept and a local supplier who is able to work with you on the art of the possible.

Don’t restrict yourself when brainstorming ideas because pretty much any shape can be produced. There are some great examples of custom USB sticks that you can see on the web in the shape of vehicles, fruit, wine bottles, beer cans, cartoon characters, erasers, pills etc. You name it and it can be manufactured.

There are also many materials a custom USB memory stick can be manufactured from including but not limited to plastic, PVC, ABS, Silicon, PET, rubber, wood, leather and metal. If in any doubt ask your supplier and get some samples so you can feel/see how the material influences the finished product. Be aware that for some intricate designs the factories may not be able to manufacture them in all of the materials available.

A well-designed and manufactured custom USB stick will engage with your target audience and deliver a much bigger boost to your advertising or marketing campaign than a standard, printed, memory stick. Do though allow a little more time for the production and do work with a local supplier that has experience of delivering custom USB solutions. They will guide you through the process, help with the design and will have access to a number of factories that can manufacture your custom sticks.

Pantone Matched Branded USB Sticks at their Best

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

If you are considering buying promotional Memory Sticks to support your advertising and marketing activities or maybe to hand out at a show, conference or seminar then its worth considering getting the body of the memory stick pantone matched. This simple process allows you to choose one of the primary colours from your logo or brand and get the body shell of the memory stick manufactured in this colour.

The results look stunning and whilst printing on standard factory colours is “OK” pantone matching raises the bar and shows that a little more effort has been put into the job. Don’t be put off by the costs either. Historically there were high minimum order quantities for pantone matching and you’d have to pay quite

Patone Matched Memory Stick

Pantone Matched Memory Stick

hefty set up fees but today the factories are fighting for the work and will pretty much pantone match for any quantity and often at no extra cost. If you have a brand of design that would lend itself to pantone matching its always worth asking the question of your supplier.

Good suppliers will have in-house designers that will be able to mock-up the memory sticks to show you what impact pantone matching will have. So, don’t think its something you have to go into “blind” and hope it will look good. You should be presented with both mock-ups and factory proofs before any production takes place so you have ample opportunity to make sure you are happy with how they look.

The lead times should not be any more of a consideration than if you were buying standard branded sticks. Whichever option you choose you should allow around 14 days from order to delivery albeit it is sometimes possible to squeeze this lead time a little if you’re in a hurry.

Don’t forget the packaging options if you are choosing a pantone matched memory stick. Combining a printed/branded presentation tin for example with a pantone matched memory stick will look fantastic and really make an impact when distributed. This is a key point because its the initial “wow” factor that will really help gauge if the investment you’ve made has been a good one. You want the recipient to remember, cherish and use the memory stick you’ve paid for because you want your brand associated with these positive thoughts.

At USB2U we’ve been supplying custom memory sticks and branded memory sticks for the last 7 years and we offer a very competitive pantone matching service. Give us a call or complete the on-line enquiry form and we’ll get back to you in a flash!

USB Accessories

A memory stick is a great way to transport data but they can easily find the bottom of your pocket or bag. It is a good idea to remember that USB2U can provide a range of suitable accessories and packaging to help avoid losing that important little stick! There are many different options of accessories and packaging available such as, lanyards, key rings, carabiners and USB extension cables.

USB lanyard

Lanyards

Lanyards are probably the most popular choice with many of our customers. They can be attached securely to the USB drive and placed around the users neck – a great idea to avoid losing vital data!. And while lanyards are typically worn around the neck, it’s not unusual for them to be hanging out of pockets or belt loops, wrapped around as wrist straps or attached to and hanging from many other things! Lanyards can also be branded with your logo or message.

USB keyring

Keyrings

Key Rings are also a useful accessory to consider. Like lanyards they can be attached to the USB drive and in turn attached to your keys meaning you will never be without your memory stick and data! They are available in different sizes and are more robust than lanyards.

USB carabiner

Carabiners

Our carabiner’s are fast becoming a favourite. These function like a climber’s carabiner and can be attached to the hook of your branded USB. They’re also great for attaching onto bags or laptop cases. Unlike most small key rings they are also big enough to carry a brand or logo.

USB extension cable

USB Extension Cables

USB extension cables are worth considering if your PC box is located under your desk. You simply plug the extension into the USB drive of your PC and feed the cable onto your desktop. You’ll never have to struggle to plug your branded USB drive underneath your desk again!

All of the above mentioned accessories can be supplied with your order of branded USB memory sticks and are available in different colours, shapes and sizes. If you are not sure about which would suit you best please contact USB2U where an Account Manager will be happy to discuss your options.

Branded Memory Sticks – Buyer Beware

Thursday, October 22nd, 2009

OK, so you’ve decided you need some branded memory sticks to support your marketing and advertising activities or perhaps to hand out at an event or seminar or maybe even to give away to staff or customers. Not surprising really as branded memory sticks are incredibly popular and are always well received.

Memory sticks are a great way to get your brand promoted, they have real and perceived intrinsic value, they’re portable, useful and they look great printed or engraved with company logos. Not only this but, the price of memory sticks has fallen to a point where they are now a viable option for many activities and events but, when shopping around for the best deal you do need to have your wits about you.

Branded USB
Branded USB
Branded USB

When sourcing printed memory sticks it’s understandably easy to be led by price and price alone. After all, times are hard at the moment and budgets are tight and it’s critical that you demonstrate to the budget holders that you’ve secured the best deal you can. But, don’t let price be the only arbiter because making a buying decision based on price alone, particularly from a supplier you’ve never dealt with before can this can come back and bite you where it hurts!

Here’s a true tale that illustrates this point – A customer recently asked us to beat a price for a large quantity of 1GB branded memory sticks. The customer in question had gone directly to a factory in China and was presenting us with an incredible price challenge. Despite our best efforts we couldn’t get anywhere near the price and the order was placed on the factory.

When the order arrived and the customer started to load data onto the memory sticks they were surprised to find that although the sticks had 1GB labels on them that they could not load more than 128MB of data! On checking with the factory they were informed that the internal memory was 128MB not the 1GB ordered and paid for. The memory sticks had been “dressed up” to look like 1GB sticks and the factories response was that it was the only way the could meet the customers target price!

The factory has refused to accept the memory sticks back so the client is stuck with thousands of branded memory sticks that are useless for their needs. Whilst litigation would normally be an option, cross border litigation against a factory in China is a little more challenging!

The moral of the story is that if a price seems too good to be true then it most probably is and when sourcing branded memory sticks you are best to use a reputable, local company that have a proven track record of delivery and support.

At USB2U we have been supplying branded USB Memory sticks since 2002. We only work with known and trusted factories that we have met/vetted and whose QA processes meet our strict standards. We also ensure that all memory sticks we import are fully RoHS compliant and meet all the latest WEEE and REACH Compliance Regulations. With USB2U you’re in safe hands and we’ll always do our utmost to offer you the best price we can whilst ensuring your needs are fully met.

Northampton University Choose USB2U for Branded USB Memory Sticks

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

The University of Northampton, specifically the Northampton Business School at the University, required a uniquely branded USB Memory Stick to promote the Higher Education Alliance (HEA) within the university.

The University of Northampton Higher Education Alliance (HEA) was established to bring together the University and staff from all regional educational establishments, to provide a forum for the discussion and sharing of best practice regarding the University’s guidance activity.

Univeristy of Northampton USB Flash Drives

The aim of the USB Memory Stick was to provide students with an incentive to complete feedback on their distant learning programmes.  The prerequisite was to provide an incentive that was both compelling, relevant and useful for students.

As there is no permanent storage area on the University network for students, the USB Memory Stick would be an extremely useful tool, allowing students to store, back up and transport important coursework.

The University undertook a tender process and the normal due diligence checks. We were delighted that they selected USB2u to supply Branded USB memory sticks, not least because we are practically neighbours.

Sebastian La Porta, Sales Director for USB2U, explained “We were delighted to be trusted with the University’s important project. We were particularly pleased that the University were able to support a local business.  We have delivered many hundreds of successful projects for universities across the UK, but the team were particularly pleased to be working for our own local university.”

Dr David Burnapp (Senior Lecturer) was a very strong advocate for the project as student feedback is of the utmost importance. The dual-sided branding on the USB memory sticks ensures that it not only represents the University, but also the HEA.

Univeristy of Northampton USB Flash Drives

“We were delighted with the high quality of the goods and level of support that we received from USB2U. Whilst they won the order on our standard selection criteria, it was particularly pleasing to place this with a local and established business.”
