Branded USB Memory Sticks – Why Are So Many Being Given Away

Monday, September 14th, 2009

It’s no exaggeration to say that millions and millions of Branded USB Memory Sticks are given away free every year and the trend is accelerating. But why, what makes a branded USB memory stick such a great item and what are they most commonly being used for?

Branded USB

Branded USB Memory Sticks are incredibly popular with everyone because:

  1. They are incredibly handy gadgets that make storing and transporting large amounts of data very easy.
  2. They come in a range of designs and styles that look great when printed up with a logo or brand. Matching the body of many of the USB Memory Sticks to a primary colour from the printed brand is relatively easy to do and inexpensive and helps to lift the overall “look and feel” of the memory stick.
  3. People like to receive branded USB memory sticks because of their perceived value and because of their intrinsic usefulness.
  4. They are small and light so transportation, storage and distribution is never an issue.
  5. They have global appeal. Unlike some promotional products that only work in certain markets and cultures USB memory sticks have a universal appeal.
  6. They are easy to use and data (files, music, videos, presentations, etc.) can be stored onto the memory stick before they are distribution.
  7. Prices have fallen over the last few years making them a cost effective marketing and promotional tool.

What are the most common uses for Branded USB Memory Sticks?

Not surprisingly given their popularity the usage of memory sticks continues to grow and new and innovative uses for them are being found all the time. Some of the more common uses include:

  1. Giveaways at trade shows, exhibitions and conferences – branded USB memory sticks are an ideal way to get your brand distributed and your sales brochures brought to life. Pre-loading links to your website, including sales videos and presentations together with product sheets and special offers.
  2. Seminars where they are typically pre-loaded with speakers notes, presentations and details of forthcoming seminars and events that the audience might be interested in.
  3. Press Launches – handing out a branded or even a custom shaped USB Memory stick at a press launch is a great way to engage with the invited journalists. Custom USB memory sticks manufactured in a shape to represent the event are becoming increasingly popular because of the “wow” factor and talking point they create.
  4. Product Launches – USB memory sticks printed with the logo or design of your product (or even manufactured in the shape of your product) and pre-loaded with product information, preview videos, pricing etc are popular. More and more companies are now using memory sticks are a core part of their overall sales and marketing mix and launch plans.
  5. University Fresher Fairs – every student loves something for nothing and if it can’t be beer then a USB memory stick is a good substitute particularly if you can pre-load it with lots of useful information for them on the university, life as a student, student offers, housing information, student union details etc.
  6. Schools – Many schools now mandate the use memory sticks and are either making them available to students free of charge or supplying them with the school crest/logo on at a subsidised rate.

Whilst not an exhaustive list it does illustrate the range of uses the once humble USB memory stick is now being put to.

Go Large with a 256GB (Gigabyte) Promotional USB Memory Stick

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

With the announcement a couple of weeks ago by Kingston Technology of the launch of the world’s first 256GB USB flash drive how long will it be before USB memory sticks of this size are being given away free as part of promotional and marketing campaigns.

A 256GB Memory stick is capable of storing 51,000 images or the equivalent of 54 DVDs-worth of data in your pocket. That’s a HUGE amount of data and it really does open up all sorts of data storage options, including the ability to store High Def movies and trailers on a USB memory stick. The downside is that they are not cheap. At the moment the RRP for the Kingston Data Traveller 300 – 256GB is around £550 each!! But this does come with a five-year warranty and 24/7 Tech Support.

So, suggesting that these behemoths of the USB Memory stick world could be given away free by companies simply as a way of promoting their brand or products seems absurd but consider the history of the humble USB memory stick.

In 2002 a typical branded USB memory stick was 16MB. Today the most popular size of USB Memory stick chosen by companies for promotional activities is 2GB. In 2002 using a 2GB memory stick for promotional use would have seemed equally absurd but just 7 years later millions of them are given away free of charge every year.

When we do reach the point where a 256GB USB memory stick can be a economic proposition for the promotions industry it will be interesting to see what use the massive amounts of storage they deliver are being put to. With at least 5 years there is plenty of time to put our collective thinking caps on.

Flash Prices Continue to Rise Across All Memory Sizes

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

The market for USB Flash memory components is in meltdown right now with prices being adjusted by the factories several times a day. And for clarity the prices are going up and up rapidly with some factories pushing prices up by around 20% in the last 7 days.

The underlying cause is two fold:

1) The forthcoming 5 day public holiday is causing panic buying as assembly plants that put together the Flash Memory Sticks try to buy stock. The recent slowdown in sales has stripped out the “fat” that was around in the market so even the smallest event (such as a weeks holiday) is having a dramatic impact on pricing.

2) The large order placed by Apple Corp for its i-Pods is still causing a shortage of supply of Flash Nand Chips.

Prices are not expected to steady until October.

Press Launches – Is It Just Content That Is King

Tuesday, September 8th, 2009

Lets face it if you’ve got an important Press Event coming up, perhaps to support the launch of a new product, a new service or company expansion then you need it to go well, particularly if it’s a high profile event that could impact your own career depending on how it goes.

As the Press Officer or PR Manager you’ll already be well versed at “keeping lots of plates spinning” and ensuring that your speakers are confirmed, well briefed and “on-message”. But typically you’ll also have responsibility for selecting and securing the venue, setting up the room, getting the right audience confirmed and dealing with the catering and drinks.

The content being delivered might be the responsibility of your colleagues in the Executive Team, Product Teams or Marketing Departments but co-ordinating these individuals and teams can be a challenge. Someone has to take ownership of the overall theme and messages and to make sure Q & A’s are agreed in advance. Often these events can make or break companies or at the very least ensure the success of a new product(s). It’s an overused phrase but “failure is not an option”.

Simple things like ensuring the invited audience and journalists have copies of the speaker’s notes, slides and biographies are critical. Whether these are handed out in printed form or electronically often depends on what’s being said and to whom but, increasingly USB Memory Sticks are being used to deliver the content in a format that is convenient, lightweight and portable.

Rather than just using a standard USB memory stick an increasing number of companies are using fully customised USB memory sticks as an integral part of their event. Custom USB sticks manufactured in the shape of the product being launched or to represent the company’s brand or logo really do help to ensure that the messages last in a tangible form beyond the event. If you can send your audience away informed, happy, well fed and with easy access to all the key data, messages, product sheets etc. on a handy, lightweight and portable custom USB stick then it should be a job well done.

So whilst content is undoubtedly king and no-one is for a minute suggesting a custom USB memory stick can make up for a poorly thought out or poorly delivered press event or product launch they can add a little bit of a “wow” factor when done well and they provide a talking point beyond the event that is rarely achieved with paper brochures or photocopied versions of PowerPoint slides.

Custom USB Flash Drive Lets You Seize The Day

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

As businesses are trying ever harder to entice customers to buy their product and stand out from their rivals and peers, one of the best ways to go about standing from the crowd is to utilize the advances in customisation technology. Whether it is giving the end user the chance to have their name or emblazoned on a product or perhaps offering companies the opportunity to place their logo on a product they can offer to companies as a promotional tool, customization is in. There are so many products where the benefits from this method of working are coming in but the best ones are where there is a strong purpose and the product is likely to be used. There are many products which would fit into this category but the custom usb flash drive is easily one of the most effective.

Custom USB

One of the simplest reasons for having a custom usb flash drive is the fact that it may be difficult to tell different flash drives apart. Just think about the situation in a busy office where there may be a number of flash drives available. If the office is able to take advantage of bulk buying capabilities, it is very likely that all of these flash drives are going to appear very similar. This is great for the budget but may be very costly if you need to find a specific flash drive in a very short space of time. If you have important information on a particular flash drive, having to check each and every one until you find it is going to be very costly and time consuming. Having a customised flash drive enables companies to place specific titles or details onto every product making it easier to catalogue them.

Custom USB Memory Stick

This may seem like a boring or dull use of customisation for a great number of customers but the business benefits that will arise from working in this manner are going to be of great benefit. Having access to the data you need at a moments notice will help you run efficiently and in these tough economic times, any advantage which can be gained is massively important. It may not seem like the most important issue in a busy office but a custom usb flash drive definitely has the potential to make a company run more efficiently and effectively.

Aside from that, there is a definite coolness about having a custom usb flash drive and the cool factor is not something to be overlooked by firms. Customers are going to look for a key reason to purchase a particular product and there is not a lot to choose between for a number of custom usb flash drive. Therefore, anything which makes this product stand out from the rest of the market is going to be a potential crowd pleaser and what could be more unique than creating a message of your own making? This is why a custom usb flash drive could provide you with the edge you need to succeed.

Personalised Memory Stick Will Stand You Apart

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

If there is anything that has defined the past decade, it will be the notion that anyone can have a touch of celebrity and the dream of being a star is no longer out of reach. This is easily shown in the high number of reality TV shows that are available and the lengths that people will take to become famous. Whilst this does not apply to absolutely everyone, there is no doubt that the cult of celebrity and fame has filtered through to so many different walks of life. One of the key areas this can be shown in is the fact that customisation and personalisation of products is at an all time high. Whatever it is, it’s usually possible to plaster a name or image across it which will immediately mark something as being owned solely by one person. One of the key exponents of this type of situation is the personalised memory stick which is growing in popularity for so many people.

Anyone can have a simple memory stick and it will do the job that it was intended to do. If it saves your data and information and allows users to access it whenever they need, then the memory stick is doing its job but people are always looking for more. Therefore, firms are looking for ways to add value to the product and the personalised memory stick is an excellent opportunity for doing so. It is one thing having a memory stick that is large enough to contain all the information and data you need, it is completely another for it to have your own name splashed all over it.

Branded USB

School pupils and college students are finding that they are expected to do a lot more course-work on computers and can transfer work between home and school on a regular basis. This means that they will need a safe and secure method of storing and saving data, which has seen the demand for memory sticks rise sharply. However, if a class room of thirty or more students are working in a computer lab and all with their own memory sticks, it may become very easy for the sticks to become mixed up. A student who has a personalised memory stick would not experience this situation as the branding on their stick would instinctively mark it out as their own product.

The beauty about the personalised memory stick is that the only limitation that can be placed on it will be the imagination of the firm or customer. Any sort of colour would be available but the range of shapes and fabrics that can be used in these products has risen sharply in the past few years. Whether it is to show off a particular product or character or just to have a unique shape that stands out from the norm, the personalised memory stick is the ideal way to stamp your unique identity onto your work and let people know that you follow your own rules.

Promotional USB Flash Drive Can Give You The Edge

Tuesday, September 1st, 2009

So many promotional products fail to do the job they are designed to do by being of no value or benefit to the potential customer or end user. To understand this you only have to place yourself into the position of the customer who receives the promotional good. If you were offered something that has no benefit or value to you, you would receive it gratefully but you would not keep it in a prominent position. This means that it would not be in a position to remind you of who gave it to you and the intended purpose would be lost. This makes it essential to offer a product that the customer will use on a regular basis and a promotional usb flash drive may be just the thing to stick in a customer’s memory.

The great thing about the modern range of promotional usb flash drive products is that they can be tailored to your every need in order to maximise the benefit from using the product. For example, if a company specialises in wood supplies, why not offer usb stick made from wood. The traditional type of usb flash drive will be plastic and rather plain but the advances in technology means that the container for the drive can come in all different sizes and from all different materials. The limit on what can be used for a flash drive is probably only bound by imagination but there are obvious budgetary and usefulness constraints placed upon this type of product. It may cost a bit more to utilise the promotional element of the flash drive but it has to be questioned if the cost effective element is then worth it. Many firms would be happier to pay a higher price for a promotional tool if it guaranteed that they would have a better chance of being recognised by a firm and hopefully earning more business.

Credit Card USB

In the current economic climate, it is important for a firm to do everything that they can to gain an edge over their rivals and this is exactly what a promotional usb flash drive can do. The effectiveness of this product would pay for itself in no time at all and would help to mark out the firm as one of innovative thinking and embracing new ideas. Sometimes the additional image benefits of these promotional tasks are as important as the actual promotional work itself and this is certainly an area where this product will assist with.

If you have not considered if a promotional usb flash drive is right for you and your promotional needs, perhaps it is time to give it some thought. As more and more firms become comfortable with the digital age, providing catalogues and brochures in an electronic format is more attractive and a lot more environmentally friendly. This means that you can be seen as a firm who is pushing all the right boundaries by embracing the advantages offered by using a promotional usb flash drive product.
